Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Sellier & Bellot 10mm 180gr FMJ
April 14 2016 02:36:50 PM MDT
The two 25 rd trays is normal in my experience for their handgun ammo.  I personally don't mind and love the fact that they have the smallest boxes so storage is much more efficient.  now I only wish they would come out with some good and hot defensive handgun rounds, it would be good for us and them.  IMHO S&B is great ammo and a good value to boot.

I can't wait to see how these perform Intercooler.  fingers crossed they have some spice so we have a decently priced practice round that isn't a 40sw velocity.  I hate practicing with watered down stuff while having Underwood for defense.  way too much of a recoil difference.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: SD ammo recommendations

Any ammo brand and grain size that functions reliably in that particular pistol.  My G20 eats everything, but the Hornady 180 XTPs always go bang, have decent power and less recoil than a high impulse pill, so follow ups are more accurate.  the 180 xtps should still be like getting hit with two 9mm bullets and hurt really badly.  The plus is I always can find them in stock somewhere, even when the shelves were bare for most common calibers over the last few years.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Buds has Winchester Silvertips

Able's and Lucky Gunner have them in stock.  prices are a bit higher, but they have them in stock.  seems like Winchester is getting caught up on their production and now getting to not so common calibers.

General Discussion / Re: Did you get your 100 rounds today?
November 20 2015 01:05:17 PM MST
Yes.  ordered more than that today in 9mm, 10mm and .357 Mag just before I logged in here.  Have some 175gr Silver Tips coming for the G20.  ;D

I agree with previous comments.  According to the MSM, having more than one box of ammo in your house means you are "stockpiling".  Makes as much sense as going to the gas station and only getting enough gas for the trip to the store you are making, AND doing that every day.  silliness.

For sale / Win 10mm 175gr Silver Tips in stock
November 20 2015 01:00:44 PM MST
I was looking around today and saw that Able's Ammo and Lucky Gunner both have the Winchester 175 gr 10mm ammo in stock.  Prices differ and are on the high side, but I have not seen these in stock since I bought my first 10mm pistola more than 2 years ago.  get it while it lasts.

For sale / Colt Delta Elite available

Impact Guns has Colt Delta Elite in stock.  have no idea if "very low stock" means they have 1 or 5, but if someone is looking for a new one, they have at least one.  :)

General Discussion / Re: AFTERMARKET Barrels
April 11 2015 01:03:04 PM MDT
I have personally bought a LW and Storm Lake barrels, stock length for my G20.  I compared both of these aftermarkets to the Glock barrel.  Both were purchased separately about a year and a half ago.  I got the LW first based on research I did, but unfortunately I did not find the reviews related to the more recently produced LW barrels to have less case support than the older ones [mine does not have the spikey hair dude on it].  When it arrived, the LW does have a tighten chamber, but the case support was the same or maybe even a tad less than the stock barrel.   :o >:( :( ugh, so I looked at getting either a KKM or a Storm Lake.  Barsto was at the top of my list, but none were in stock and I wanted one sooner than the 6-8 weeks.  Unfortunately, the KKM was in the same boat.  I found the SL in stock at Midway and pulled the trigger.  I had read some reviews that the SL needed some slight fitting and ordered a needle file set at the same time.  The Storm Lake did need some delicate filing where the square part of the Glock barrel meets the slide at the top, but was not difficult.  In comparison to the LW and stock barrels, the SL has a chamber like the Glock one, a bit tighten than stock though, but the case support is superb.  I can't get the caliper in there to measure and it is great support.

You might want to check into the SL barrel too.  Just think about getting some quality needle files to fit it to your pistol's slide.  This is a good video done by Ammo Test (a member on here too) that shows the barrels with cartridges in them with a G29 length: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU83fh6XoYA

I know that I am the weakest link in the accuracy department, so my main consideration with the barrel was case support for high impulse rounds.  that and I didn't want to wait.  I think I had a code for Midway too that made the SL a little cheaper too.

Factory Ammo / Re: +p ish 9mm plinking ammo

The highest I have ever tested and I'm sure IC will concur would be the UW +P+ offerings.  The ones I duplicated using the AutoComp powder matched perfectly.  They were bad to the bone 9mm stuff!

I have some boxes of all three bullet weights for the UW +p and +p+.  the +p's are stout and I haven't shot the bad boys yet.  should be fun, loud and bright.  ;D

Factory Ammo / Re: +p ish 9mm plinking ammo

For me and my G17, I mostly range 9mm with Speer Lawman in 115 or 124 gr or S&B.  I have tried out a box or two of most offerings and these work the best for my pistol.  Both are clean shooting and the S&B benefit being the smaller boxes for more compact storage.  The Speer FMJ loadings are pretty darn close to their HP rounds.  For the extra NATO loadings, I like Winchester or IMI (either brown box or the blue box Samson).  Widener's seems to typically have the IMI import brown box in stock.  I have a few boxes of Geco to try, just haven't gotten to the range yet after end of the year back surgery.  Blazer Brass shots great in my pistol also, but the small cost difference isn't enough for me to change.

SGAmmo is my go to online retailer (8.25% sales tax and for me it is 2 days at my door) and they usually have lots of options with good prices, esp. if you are buying in bulk with the case discounts.  I have always found their prices to be very competitive and they don't make $$ on shipping like some others I won't name.  I am just a satisfied customer for the past couple years and always like to support a family small business over a big corp whenever I can.  check them out for 9mm and most other calibers too: http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/pistol-ammunition/9mm-9x19

edit: they get their new stock in on Tues and Thurs mornings btw.  they usually get all the new stuff or quantities posted online by noonish on those days too.

I agree with Centimeter's comment above.  I began to have a problem the instant the officer walked up and grabbed the man's rifle.  If the officer had concerns for his personal safety, which I totally understand, then this act is the farthest thing he should be doing.  Also, the guy and his son are walking along farm or ranch land on a 1.5 lane road that is just a strip of asphalt.  The part that got my blood flowing was when the officer goes and gives his "story" to the backup officer and it immediately deviates from what the dashcam captured.  Yes, both were pushy and dominant personalities but I cannot understand how a court that should have viewed the dashcam footage could have ruled the way they did is absolutely beyond me.

To the many leos on this site, thank you for putting you lives on the line each and every day.

I think this was from the 150g Underwood out of a Gen4 G20.

The Tanfoglio handled these just fine.  What is an ammo manufacturer to do?  Load for the Delta Elite?  The Glock factory barrel?  The Tanfoglio pistol?

They say they Underwood are just under SAAMI max and I guess the gun manufactures need to build 'em for that level.  From what I see, Underwood has backed off a hair to keep liability in check.  Heck, I build my own now and I usually stop a hair below Underwood's level as documented by Shadow's work here.  Just cheaper, even with all new components.

Greg

I own a Gen3 G20 and know first hand the factory barrel is way too under supported for the hotter UW stuff.  I purchased LW and Storm Lake barrels to compare to the factory.  the newer production LW I got had just about the same delinquent amount of case support, although the LW had a tighter chamber.   The older LW barrels, as documented by a plethora of online photos and videos, had essentially fully supported barrels.  the Storm Lake turned out to the only fully supported barrel of the three and has the same chamber diameter as the factory barrel.

In looking at those smily cases, this looks to be a situation of factory barrel lacking enough case support combined with rounds right on, or slightly over, the edge of safe pressure.  I never took any photos of brass using the factory barrel, but of the brass I found (UW notoriously flies very far even in an indoor range), there never was any smiles.  I was using the factory recoil spring and the pistol was out of the box stock.

just my two cents.

General Discussion / Re: My want list !!!
February 13 2015 11:08:29 AM MST
I needed to hit that monster Powerball because my list is long for non-10mm firearms:

Ruger GP100 6" or S&W 686-6 6"
Marlin 1984C .357 lever
Marlin 1894 Cowboy .44 lever
Marlin 1895 Big Loop, either SS or blued .45-70 Govt
M1 Carbine, preferably a GI Issue with WWII serial
M1 Garand, preferably a GI Issue with WWII serial
S&W 27 (just so purdy)
S&W 29 (just so purdy)
Mossberg 590A1 20" 9 shot 12ga

There are more in my head but those are the ones on the tip of my tongue.  I am also shopping for a safe and I suppose I should get a really big one from Sturdy.  Of course there are all the holsters, ammo and accessories to go with all of that.  I might need a new house with an actual vault.   :o

For 10mm, I really want to get an EAA Tanfoglio Match.  A wheel 10mm would be awesome too.  ;D

Dreaming I know, but that is what is great about those insanely large lotto amounts.  It gets the imagination going.

As to "Trust" that was not in the criteria. Personally, I never trust gun reviews in the first couple of years a product has been out. That is regardless of Print/TV/Social Media/YouTube etc. BTW, that goes for ANY product.

I personally don't like anyone I don't trust, so those are the ones I like.   ;D There are others of course, just aren't coming to mind right now.

If you use Ammoseek.com you can find decent (Armscor 10mm 180gr.) range ammo for under $20.00 and a lot more choices?

Maybe it's just me?

I have found that gunbot.net [name is odd since it is ammo, haha] works better for me personally due to the greater number of retailers participating but I do check ammoseek on occasion.  For me though, I have found a handful of online retailers that have a good selection of the calibers I shoot, have good customer service and good shipping/packing practices.  For me here in TX, I have to consider the 8.5% sales tax that others do also and that can make a deal be in reality, no so great.  That is what I would encourage everyone to do, but there are also some retailers that members on this forum have turned me onto also.

tnoutdoors9 is one of the few I trust.  He seems like an honest man and he always discloses if the ammo was sent to him or he purchased it himself.  I doubt he would make those kinds of statements and at the same time make direct comparisons to other ammo he has previously reviewed.  Plus, there are times that I recall him being critical when the ammo does not make the stated velocity on the box or performs crappy in his gel tests.

Ammotest is another great ammo reviewer and he is a member on this forum.  His videos are embedded by Kevin on the Underwood ammo site.

I always enjoy Iraqveteran8888 videos, whether reviews or just well, videos.

One thing I like about the about Youtubers and others are when they clearly state "this is my opinion", "you need to try out lots of ammo and also use what works best in your firearm and you as the shooter", etc.  I always pick up on the promotion of items and that turns me away.

Regards,
Jon
