Just wanted to stop in and voice my appreciation for you putting in the work to revive the forum. I never posted a lot but I gleaned a ton of information here over the years...I own more 10mm than any other chambering.

I don't get putting something with less frontal area and energy in a 9mm frame with the main advantage being +2 in the mag.  Most 9mms already have plenty of capacity.  If they'd shortened it soup up 380 framed guns I could get behind it.

I don't get it.  You're not going to compete against something as entrenched as the 9mm with that as your differentiation.

I think we actually need something new in the world of design for good 10mm carbine. I've been kicking around an idea for awhile now. I really like the feel of my gas operated 10mm AR. It's just not reliable. I don't really care for the blowback designs.

So, I've been thinking of something similar to a delayed roller blowback design where the delay is augmented with gas pressure. That way the timing of the action is self adjusting to the power of the ammo. I think a gas piston driven delay system would keep enough junk out of the delaying roller(s) to make it feasible.

Anybody have a bunch of money or a really good machine shop? :)

Look at CMMG.  That's the one 10mm AR design I'd trust to work.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: DIY longslide build

Took awhile to get a target with the weather.  Given this is a hunting gun, this target was 25 yards shooting partially braced leaning against a post, like I might use a tree in the woods for stability.  Obviously the opportunity to practice consistent trigger pull with 2 major and a minor group but I'm pleased.

Friends don't let friends buy parts from Fusion.  I started with 80% Fusion parts and replaced all during the build except the barrel and MSH/magwell, which it appears I lucked out with and I managed to get it to lock up tight and shoot well -- not guaranteed as it was not oversize everywhere.  The magwell comes lose every two mags despite loctite, I have half a dozen other 1911 on which I have installed similar designs from other manufacturers and never had a problem keeping them tight.  I actually bought a second one because I stripped the screw and MSH on the first trying to keep it tight (wanted to re-used the shaped magwell I'd already put hours into).

You might want to try Fusion Arms  https://fusionfirearms.com/

Give Robert Serva a call

Yes, I mentioned them toward the end of my OP.   Their 10mms are out of stock.  They cost a little more than the R1, but a little less than the TRP.  And I could get one with exactly the features I'm looking for.

Sounds to me like Fusion is the way to go since you can get exactly what you want. You'll just have to wait a bit to get it.

After my experience with Fusion parts while building my own 10mm longslide...which started out with mostly Fusion parts and I basically paid for 2 guns as I had to replace most of them....I'd stay far, far away...surf the internet I'm not alone.  I bought a Fusion "trigger kit" for example, I had a 9.5lb pull.  Bought a replacement from Cylinder and Slide and it came in around 4lbs.  Changing nothing else.  Pretty much everything from Fusion was out of spec.  The only thing I retained was the barrel, and I'm waiting on good weather for shooting but still not out of the woods with that.

Looks awesome, spaniel!  Some pics of targets are now in order.

Sam

Agreed.  Working on it.  Some modification of the front sight was in order.

I found the flat-bottom FPS to help a bit, but going to a heavier mainspring was the biggest help.

Actually, the biggest help was building a longslide.  All else equal, the heavier slide seems to keep the brass velocity sub-orbital.

10mm semi-auto handguns / DIY longslide build

I thought I'd share the 10mm longslide build I just completed; I did everything but the cerakote and figure I have 40-50 hours into it.  It's a Caspian frame/slide and started with mostly Fusion parts, but only a few of those remain (barrel, MSH/well, thumb safety, trigger).  It was my first 1911 build so I enjoyed learning the design inside and out.  Surprisingly it runs well.  Intended use is deer hunting.

My biggest learning was that using Fusion for parts was a mistake.  Twice they sent the wrong parts, and many of the ones I got were undersized or otherwise out of spec.  The trigger/sear/disconnector/hammer came as a set and had a 9.5lb pull; swapped out the sear/disconnector/hammer for a Cylinder and Slide set with everything else the same and it was 4lb.  The Fusion barrel is accurate and locks up tight after hood fitting but that was luck as there was no extra material to fit either the upper or lower lugs.

Very happy with the Caspian parts (slide, frame, grip safety, recoil spring plug) and EGW (angle bored oversized barrel bushing, extractor, firing pin stop).

It's sick that I find myself looking at the NRA the way I do a political election...voting for the best bad option vs something I favor.  I HATE their incessant fear-mongering, like gun owners are Pavlovian puppets.  I get it, the antis won't stop.  Quit the superlatives.  My extra $$ don't help if Wayne spends them on clothes in Beverly Hills.  I keep my membership current as it is required to compete but that's about it.  I am really concerned about their legitimacy as an organization to support our rights.  Charlton Heston would turn over in his grave...

Thank you for all the helpful comments.  Sounds like I should at least look at a Remington.  I had overlooked the Kimber; I have an Eclipse Custom II in 10mm (5") and love it.  I also have a RIA 10mm Commander.  I like the gun but it took a lot of work....and some replacement parts...to get it running right.  The mag catch wouldn't hold a mag out of the box, for example.  I had planned on using it as a base gun to modify so it was acceptable, but I really don't feel like rolling the dice on a RIA for this purpose.

10mm semi-auto handguns / 10mm long slide for hunting
April 14 2019 06:34:59 PM MDT
I have learned through my friend who works at my LGS that my 7-year-old son is telling my wife that they need to get me a new gun for my birthday (apparently I taught him well).  The top of my list would be a 10mm long slide for deer hunting on a heavily wooded property I recently bought.

I want 10mm with adjustable sights, standard 1911 width (no double stack, no Glock).  The Remington Hunter looks sufficient.  The Springfield Operator looks very nice, but I'm not sure it's worth about double the price for a handgun intended for hunting within bow range.

I have ZERO interest in anything above the price point of the Springfield.  Just inquiring if I'm missing any options.  I always felt I'd build a top tier one myself one day and still may.

I have an Eclipse Custom II and it is my favorite pistol.  Out of the box full 10mm loads sent brass into low Earth orbit.  I went to a 22lb recoil spring, 25lb hammer spring, and flat bottom FP stop.  More manageable, but you just need to accept a 10mm 1911 is never going to throw brass like a 45.

Over-powering the recoil spring can also batter the gun.

You can shoot 40 s&w out of the 10mm barrel anyway. No diff than 38 in a 357. Conversion barrel was a waste of ammo money.

YOU may be able to shoot .40SW in your 10mm bbl but THERE is a HUGE difference. 38/357 is a rimmed cartridge. .40/10 spaces off the case mouth. I use proper barrels.

No, it's not a huge difference. It's the same damn thing, both are being held at the back. Waste your money all you want. "Proper" idiots make companies rich.

Sorry, but this is factually inaccurate.  Big difference between a fully supported rimmed cartridge and a semi auto case intended to headspace off the mouth held only by the extractor.  BIG difference.  Try at your own risk.  Well worth the conversion barrel to me.

For someone who doesn't reload this is a wise path to allow you to practice more.  For the reloader, this only makes sense if you must shoot somewhere that you are likely to lose brass.  I have a private range set up so I lose little brass.  But if I had to shoot my 10mm at a public range often, and losing brass was a real likelihood, having a 40 conversion barrel would be an asset.

Did some more nosing. A 460 SW Magnum out does the 350 legen with only a 8.3" barrel  :o

While I love love love the 460 , the 350 Legend is being talked up as a soft shooter. They directly compare recoil to a 223.

I haven't seen them compare recoil to a 223. I have seen penetration compared with 223. I have seen them state its less recoil than 450 bushmaster and then if you open the graphic it also shows 30-30. Both a different world from 223.

Winchester also directly states its the "fastest straight-walled hunting cartridge" From their FAQ

If 350 Legend really the "fastest straight-walled hunting cartridge"?
Yes, the 350 Legend is the fastest SAAMI-approved straight-walled hunting cartridge for use in states that have specific regulations for deer hunting with straight-walled centerfire cartridges. Those states include, but may not be limited to: Michigan, Ohio, Iowa and Indiana.

This statement is patently false. They are trying to hide behind "SAAMI approved" and "Hunting Cartridge" to keep that statement. Yes they also have a typo on the Winchester site. It really starts If 305 legend.

Well it's at least false to list Indiana here, it's been a LONG time since there was a straightwall requirement, and the length requirement went out the door a number of years ago...we can shoot real rifle rounds here now...

That's a bummer Spaniel. On the bright side, you now need a new gun that fits that light :D

LOL.  I once justified a 41Mag because I accidentally bought a lb of H110 and needed something to burn it in.  But no, my gun store friend had a use for that model, so he got the right one and we swapped.
