Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Favorite Powder
April 04 2017 02:57:40 PM MDT
Here are my experiences with a  couple of the powders you mentioned.

I like AA#9 when shooting a 6" or longer barrel and 180+ gr bullets.  It shoots accurate and can get amazing velocities while staying within published data.  It meters well, but not very economical.  In shorter barrels, it loses its shine.  Velocities go down, so you get much less "bang for your buck".  I load #9 primarily for my hunting loads.

As mentioned, Blue dot shoots nice.  I have loaded and shot more with Blue dot than any other powder.  You get accuracy, respectable velocities and a nice fireball with a loud report that makes any 10mm owner feel good inside.  It doesn't meter the best, so unless you trickle charge, stay away from the bleeding edge.  Its more economical to shoot than #9 and was always available when times were tough.

Lately, I have been working with BE-86 more.  I can get respectable velocities and accuracy.  It shoots clean and is very economical.  Less "Shock and Awe" coming from the end of the barrel when compared to Blue dot, but meters great.  Considering I also load 9mm, I like the versatility of having 1 powder that can effectively load both.  This will likely be my go to powder for both plinking and self defense loads.

Political discussion / Re: A Clinton Presidency
October 19 2016 12:25:27 PM MDT
I agree that the Supreme Court appointments will be the single most important issue as it relates to the 2nd Amendment.  She will not have enough support from congress to radically change gun laws and certainly won't have a snowballs chance in hell of repealing the 2nd Amendment.  What she will have is a Supreme Court that can forever redefine the intent of the 2nd Amendment.  It will still be there, but won't mean much.

Gary Johnson may have some good ideas, but he has absolutely zero chance of winning even a single state.  A vote for him is as good as not voting at all.  This election has to be about preventing Hillary from winning.  Above all else, we have to keep her out of office and voting for Trump is the only way to accomplish this.

You will not like the Lee Perfect Powder Measure with AA#9.  #9 is so fine that it will leak out of the powder measure.  I had that issue with mine, as do many others.  The problem was solved by getting an RCBS powder measure.  I use a Lee single stage press and dies and they are rock solid.  Maybe not as nice as RCBS or others, but as was mentioned, you would have to abuse the press and dies to break them.  I also agree with the comment about the electronic scale.  Either spend the money on a high end scale or stick to a good balance scale like the RCBS 5-0-5 (small for pistol loading).  I am sure your single stage press of choice will have a means to prime the new cases, but I prefer to use a hand primer tool.  Didn't take me long to skip that step on my Lee press and buy hand priming tool.

You don't need one to get started, but if you plan to reload those 1000 Starline cases (skip the nickel), you will need a means to clean the brass.  A tumbler, media and some concoction of polish will do the trick.

Had enough of this guy. Myself and the staff have given him plenty of leeway to give his opinion but I've received too many complaints from members here that said they won't come back because of him.

We support the 2nd amendment. He obviously does not. His constant attacks on Republican candidates and support of anti-gun politicians was unnecessary. He didn't offer up any 10mm knowledge here, and 99% of his posts were in the politics section.

He is banned. Permanent.

Good riddance.

Thank You!

This just kills me
Then you probably won't be around here much longer making sales pitches.

why in the world are you people using a single spring set up, when DPM makes the best triple PROGRESSIVE system ever made. It is right at $100.00
Simple.  For a huge majority of 10mm owners, they work.

Look up DPM reduced recoil systems, that SOLVES any and all problems with the 10mm.
Wow, since the 10mm platform has so many problems, maybe we should trade them all in for something else that doesn't need a $100 spring system in order to function.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: bluedot and 180 gr xtp data
September 01 2015 03:27:27 PM MDT
I have a G20 with a 6 inch KKM barrel.  Not necessarily the same as your stock G40 barrel, but my numbers should be somewhat close.  With a 180 gr. XTP, 10.7 gr. Blue Dot, 1.26" OAL, Winchester primers and Starline Brass, I am getting an average velocity of 1276 fps.  That should be a good velocity for whitetail.  Blue Dot doesn't meter all that well, so I prefer to use a powder trickler and weight each charge when loading Blue Dot near max loads.

Reloading 10mm ammo / BE-86 and Auto Comp Loads
April 06 2015 03:30:08 PM MDT
Took a couple of my recent loads out yesterday.  Shot from my G-20 with 6" KKM barrel, new Starline Brass, Winchester large primers and 180 gr. Bayou Bullets.  All loaded to 1.255".

8.2 grains BE-86
Average Velocity - 1289
Spread - 61
SD - 22.92

7.7 grains Winchester Auto Comp
Average Velocity - 1197
Spread - 35
SD - 15.84

No pressure signs with either load.

The Auto Comp load was max load according to Hodgdon, just loaded a little longer.  I found this to be a very nice target load.  Very light recoil and little muzzle flip.  It came in almost exactly at the velocity Hodgdon lists.  I was using a 6" barrel and they test with a 5".  I'll try 1.25" OAL next time and see what difference that makes.

The BE-86 load was impressive.  Again, loaded to book max (for JHP), but a little longer.  With the 6" barrel, this load exceeded the books veocity by a bit.  I will likely load some a little lighter and see how low I can go and still stay above 1200fps.

Didn't get to this time out, but I also plan to run these through my stock G20 barrel.

Gear/Equipment / Re: Chronograph Setup
April 01 2015 08:30:11 AM MDT
It is my old tripod that I no longer use for anything else.  Thought I'd use it for the chrony rather than sell it.  There is actually no leverage at the attachment point.  I mounted it at the location that is weight balanced.  Looks very off balance, but that heavy steel plate puts most of the weight to the front.  I can set the entire assembly onto the tripod and it will balance without locking it into the quick release mount.

Gear/Equipment / Chronograph Setup
April 01 2015 06:51:48 AM MDT
I've seen a few chronograph setups posted on here lately.  Thought I would share mine.  I have a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph that I can connect to my Android phone.  As you can see from the photo, I have a 5 inch wide by 24 inch piece of 1/4" steel protecting my chronograph.  I did this so that I don't have to purchase my 3rd Chronograph anytime soon.  I used an old, heavy duty tripod.  I removed and used parts from a pan/tilt head such as the quick release system and a couple of the mounting bolts.  The chronograph itself can be removed by backing out a thumb screw.  The entire assembly can be removed from the tripod with the quick release that was part of the old head.  The tripod is still height adjustable and the chronograph assembly can be rotated and locked into place.  The long cable that comes with the chronograph attaches to my Android phone so I don't need to see the display on the chronograph.  This system would be problematic if you need to see the display on the chronograph.

I found similar stats out of my G20 with a 6" KKM barrel with a 180 XTP and AA#9.  I loaded all mine at 1.26 OAL and used Hornady load data which maxes out at 14.9 gr.

14.4 gr. averaged 1399 fps, StdDev 15.04
14.6 gr. averaged 1426 fps, StdDev 11.72
14.9 gr. averaged 1409 fps, StdDev 14.43

Primers were a little flat, the earth's axis shifted a bit and the fillings in my teeth rattled loose, but otherwise, no issues.

There are a lot of variables to consider when deciding on a firearm to carry.  If you are not concerned about printing or open carry, the options are many.  If you want or need to be discrete about carrying there are definitely more variables to consider.  I am a big guy and larger (thicker) firearms are not comfortable for me to carry IWB.  I have tried Glocks in various IWB hosters and could never find a comfortable way to carry.  Like others have said, if its not comfortable, you won't carry it.  I now have a Walther PPS 9mm that I carry in a Crossbreed Supertuck and find it to be comfortable to carry and very concealable.   Any of the compact single stack 9's and 40's on the market would carry just as well in a quality IWB holster.  I also carry a Ruger LCP in a Galco Ankle Lite Holster.  Ankle carry is not the best way to carry, but its a nice back up option and this holster / firearm combo is pretty much invisible and you will forget you have it on.

After running these AA#9 rounds through the chronograph, I definitely found my hunting load.  The only problem I have with using AA#9 is that it disappears too fast.  With as hard as it has been to find, I'll limit it to hunting loads only...at least until I can find more.  I have several lbs of Blue Dot and like to use that as my plinking loads.  It doesn't meter well, but if I stick to mid range loads, I don't worry about it much.  I've shot WSF out of both my 9mm and 10mm guns.  Shoots nice, but dirty.  Lately, I have come into a large supply of Auto Comp.  I really like it in the 9mm.  I have yet to load any 10mm with the Auto Comp, but plan to soon.

Just received my new Caldwell chronograph last week.  I took the opportunity to load up some potential deer hunting loads using 180 gr. Hornady XTP bullets.  I am shooting a Glock 20 with a 6 inch KKM barrel.  It was quite the eye opener to see how fast the rounds that were loaded with AA#9 are actually flying!  I also loaded some Blue Dot loads that were pretty close to what I expected.  I used the Hornady load data to develop these loads.

180 gr XTP
Winchester LP
1.26 OAL
14.4 gr. AA#9
Average velocity - 1399 fps (Hornady data states 1200)

180 gr XTP
Winchester LP
1.26 OAL
14.6 gr. AA#9
Average velocity - 1426 fps

180 gr XTP
Winchester LP
1.26 OAL
14.9 gr. AA#9 (Book Max)
Average velocity - 1409 fps (Hornady data states 1250)

180 gr XTP
Winchester LP
1.26 OAL
10.7 gr. Blue Dot
Average Velocity - 1276 fps (Hornady data states 1250)

I also shot a 180 gr Speer Gold Dot that I had loaded with AA#9
180 Speer GDHP
1.255 OAL
13.0 gr. AA#9
Average Velocity - 1270 fps (Way faster than any book data I found)

As I am sure most of you have noticed, the Hornady load data has quite different numbers than what Accurate provides.  Hornady has max load for AA#9 at 14.9 gr at 1.26 OAL.  Accurate has 13.5 gr at 1.25 OAL, however both estimate about 1250 fps.  My Blue Dot loads came out very close to book velocities.  As you can see, about 25 fps faster than book, but that should be expected with my 6 inch barrel.  What completely surprised me was achieving over 1400 fps while staying inside Hornady data numbers.  Even the Gold Dot/AA#9 loads were much faster than expected.  I was also a bit surprised to see the max load of 14.9 was actually slower than the 14.6 load.

None of the loads showed signs of over pressure other than the primers were a little flattened with the AA#9 XTP loads.  Is is possible the 6 inch barrel is providing that much of a jump in velocity when the AA#9 powder is being used?  Either that or my can of AA#9 is super charged!

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Powder and Bullet Help
May 08 2014 03:17:32 PM MDT
I have an AA#9 recipe that works well with the 180 gr. Xtreme Plated HP's.  12.8 gr. AA#9, OAL 1.26".  I don't have a chronograph yet, so I can't tell you what velocity those are hitting.  I worked up all the way to 13.5 and really started to lose accuracy as I went higher than the 12.8 gr.  The Xtreme HP's are supposed to support velocities up to 1500 fps.  I didn't see any signs of key-holing or copper sheering, but the accuracy got worse the higher I went.

I use a 6" KKM barrel, so my velocities would likely be pushing a little faster than what you might see in your 4.6" barrel.

General Discussion / Re: Single stack 9mm options
April 30 2014 10:46:09 AM MDT
I have 2 single stack 9's.  My primary carry weapon is a Walther PPS.  It comes with 2 backstraps and a 7 and 8 round magazine.   With the 8 round mag, I can get my large hands on the grip comfortably.  At .9 inches wide, it is very easy to conceal.  It has a great trigger and is a very accurate shooter that handles recoil well.

The other gun is a Beretta Nano.  This is my wife's primary carry weapon.  No backstrap options.  With the 8 round magazine, my pinky is still partially off the grip, but fits my wife's hands perfectly.  The Nano is also about .9 inches wide, but is shorter in both length and height when compared to the PPS.  Despite being about 1 ounce lighter, the Nano handles recoil well.  The Nano has a much longer trigger pull than the PPS.  The Nano is also over $200 cheaper than the PPS.

Both guns are carried in a Crossbreed Supertuck holster.  We have fired everything from cheap factory rounds, +P self defense rounds, and many of my hand loads and have had zero failures of any kind.  The PPS is my favorite gun and find it to be worth every penny, but I'd recommend either as a reliable gun for carry.
