What is it my teenaged students used to say?  YEET? Hated the phrase... but I'm pretty excited about this XDM!

The delta elite has a bad and undeserved rap when it comes to case head support.

Colt proof tests every DE barrel.  Delta Elite proof loads by SAAMI spec are between 50,500 PSI and 54,000 PSI.  That is 35% and 44% above MAP of 37,500 PSI that factory ammo and handloads should conform to.  Unless you plan on loading wildly beyond SAAMI spec, a standard 1911 non-ramped barrel will serve you just fine.

Let me state I am not some purist zealot that thinks ramped barrels are an abomination and affront to the revered John Moses Browning, hallowed be his name.  JMB was a great guy and I love that his home was a short 40 minute drive from mine.  But in point of fact I don't currently own a 1911 with a frame ramp.  Every 1911 I have has a ramped barrel, because that is how they were made.

Why were they made that way?  Because that is what the market wants.  And as an added bonus they can usually make a bit more money, if not margin, on such a gun.  People pay extra for it, so even if your margin stays the same wouldn't you rather have 10% of $800 over 10% of $500?

Why does the market want it?  Well, that debate rages, but here is my personal take.  Back in the dawn of time (1980's) the IPSC pro's wanted to shoot major with 38 super without ruining their good looks when the gun blew up.  Handling over proof-load pressures required a ramped barrel.  And since those guys were shooting them everyone else had to have one, even though they didn't ever run hot ammo in their guns.  It's the old NASCAR adage of "wins on Sunday, sells on Monday".

Fusion is a reputable gun maker, and I have no doubt they have perfectly adequate case head support.  The pictures show that.  Stay on book, or not widely over, and you will be fine.

I couldn't agree more.  I've had ramped and unramped.  Currently my only 10mm 1911 an an unramped Dan Wesson.  I've never had an issue with a load - even Underwood's great stuff.  But my next 10mm 1911 will probably have a ramp, because... just because the gun I want has one.
FWIW - there must be something about living close to the home of JMB.  I'm only about 40 minutes south of his birth place.

Oh now why'd you have to go and say that?  My dreams and my wallet are taking rapidly diverging paths already anyways!!!
But 16 rounds of 9x25...

I guess it's time to sell a kidney!  :D

So I'm resurrecting a really old thread here: I'm looking at a .40 barrel for my RIA.  Seems like a no-brainer.  But... has anyone found a .357 sig barrel for an RIA?  Digging through my ammo I found two boxes of  357 sig that went with a pistol I no longer have.  Would it be possible to have a 9mm barrel reamed out to 357 sig? Has anyone done anything like that?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks!
I looked for that and couldn't find it.  I wonder if it was a filter at work?

10mm semi-auto handguns / Night Sights for my RIA

I'm looking to put night sights on my Rock Island.  I'd like the rear to be adjustable, like the factory one.  I'm correct in assuming that the cuts are Novak cuts, front and rear?

Has anyone else put night sights on their Rock?  If so, what have you put on?

(I apologize if there's a thread for this - I did a search but couldn't find anything).

Thanks in advance!

Thanks!  Once I learn how to be a 2nd Grade teacher AND run my own classes online, I'll start working on my magwell modification.

Hey thanks!  I did a search before I posted but somehow missed your thread.  I'll blame it on the "inter webs". >:D
Yours is the same issue as mine!  I may end up following a similar path.

I hope you're surviving the quarantine!  As an introvert, I have to say, it's a little bit of paradise for me! More excuses to go to the desert and go shooting! ;D

I'm the happy owner of a Rock Island Double Stack 10mm.  16 rounds of 10mm is a blast!
However (there's always a 'however')... I don't want the flared competition magwell that's on the pistol.  For my carry purposes, it serves no purpose.  Is it a pin-on like a Dawson?  Can I simply remove it and replace the grips with longer ones, or do I need to get a new main spring housing too?  For that matter - last question - does a standard MSH fit the double stack RIA 1911, or is there a special one for the double stack? Inquiring Minds Want to Know!
And trigger fingers want to shoot!  :D

So far I'm not finding it that much more onerous than a single stack 1911, and, for the desert and the mountains, the extra rounds are worth the extra weight. It was just under $525 out the door, taxes included, and I was shooting it later that day.  I don't really have much to complain about so far... in fact, I can't think of anything to complain about!  And man, the grins on rounds 9-16!

Oh that's good to hear!  Being the youngest brother you generally only hear "you're a wimp."
I'll try that loading 12 or so, waiting, loading, and repeating.  Like you, I generally load my other mags one less than max, for the same reason as you - it just seems to work better and with  fewer flaws.
I have to say - double-tapping pumpkins back and forth for 14-16 rounds was a blast!  When I got near 8 my mind said "you're about out" but my magazine said "Oh no you're not!"

I would be interested in some pictures of the melt job when you have a moment.

Ditto!!!

We went on our annual "shoot the Halloween pumpkins" trip yesterday (might was well get one more use out of those gourds!).  I had a chance to try out the Underwood 135gr I'd ordered in my Rock Island HC.  Not only is the round horrifically damaging to a pumpkin, it's a blast to walk out to about 100 yards.  I'm amazed at how flat shooting it is (relatively speaking -for a handgun round). And with those sixteen rounds... I can keep on going like it's a 9 mil.

One question - my new 16 round magazines are a real pain to load.  I've never dealt with 16 round 1911 mags.  Is that normal? Am I just the pansy my older brothers always said I was?  Is there a trick to loading those mags?
Thanks!

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: 10mm 135gr Underwood Ammo

I'm about to try some in my RIA - I'm looking at it for carry in our Western Deserts here in Utah.  Purely functional intentions.  I'm not going to shoot this ammo for fun... not me... never...  ;D
