10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: RIA 10mm 1911 *Commander*

Thanks Dennis...If I go this route, I's have my local smith do the work...he is a good one. Right now, I'm just gathering up ammo for this G20, but these guys keep bringing up that darn RIA 1911! ha

Don't forget the flat bottom firing pin stop if you wanna baby your wrist.  Bullseye shooters latched onto them years ago because they alter the recoil profile and make it feel softer.

Would that be the part EGW calls an "oversized" FPS? They show one for Series 70 and Series 80...I have no idea which one the RIA is. I've never done any smithing, so I'm "almost" clueless, ha.

Thanks Shadow...so far, I haven't found any full power 200 XTP loads. Well, I have seen some 200gr HPR that is supposed to be loaded with them. I just don't know how fast they are going. I'm also interested in DoubleTaps 200 Nosler; at their slower speed, I wonder how well they would do on bad guys/hogs. Any idea?

10mm Hunting / Underwood 200 TMJ meplat effectiveness?
November 23 2013 08:52:55 AM MST
I tried to find a gel test with this load, but didn't find any. My question is how effective is that meplat on the TMJ loaded in the Underwood ammo? I'm sure it will deform some, but at what distance? I would use them for neck/head shots or both shoulders of a critter. ( Maybe a car door in Zombieland) Any of you guys actually done any testing with this bullet profile? Thanks

Thanks, I had "assumed" it was like a Colt Delta, which didn't interest me at all. I "almost" bought a Kimber Stainless Target II in 10mm, but didn't want the big target sights. I also have spent a ton of money/time through the years in "tweeking" 1911's (45 acp) into reliable EDC guns. I love them, but was also not sure how the full power 10mm recoil would affect my rebuilt wrist, ha. So far, love those Glocks! But an affordable, well designed 1911 in 10mm is something I am drawn to....

Question?  Does the RIA have a ramped barrel like the Para/Kimber? If not, how much chamber support does it have?

I used my first G29SF on two freshly killed hog heads ( 3ft) with a LW barrel & 21# RS, the Double Tap 230 HC gave complete penetration and went deep into the dirt, which suited me as a woods load. I then used the Buffalo Bore 155 TAC-XP and recovered it under the skin on the far side, but the internal was mush, just shattered the skull! I would use either load hunting, though I lean toward hard cast in bear country. I am going to try some BB & UW 220 HC later on, which should work out even better than the 230 for 25 to 40yd shots if needed.

Gunsmithing / Re: recommended spring set up for gen4 g20
November 15 2013 07:07:28 AM MST
I'll be able to report on the DPM system pretty soon. I have been gathering up stuff for my new G20 Gen 4; Lone wolf std barrel, and the DPM mechanical system. I really liked the DPM on the G29 I had, so I wanted one for this G20 also. It came with a simple washer to fit in the oversized Gen 4 RSA hole in the slide end. Comes with two springs, one light and one heavy ( I don't know the poundage of either. My goal is to try the pistol with both factory setup and the LW/DPM set up. In that G29 ( which is a captured RSA) I could shoot mild Blaser to wild Underwood with no issues at all. I myself have not read anything negative on the Gen 4 RSA for the G20, and am looking forward to range work. I am waiting for another carry gun to come home wfrom the Smith's in a week or so. If you can wait on ordering a DPM or Springco or something, I will be reporting soon. If not, good luck to you anyhow...Oh yea, the 10mm bites hard, don't it? lol

Thanks for posting...hearing it from the men who were there has tremendous value for me.

I have never hunted with a handgun exclusively, just always have had one with me when in the woods. I have used them many times for "finishing" shots on game, and in that use, I've always shot whatever right behind the ear. I like hard cast or FMJ loads for that. I have even used Magsafes in a .45 Commander on a vehicle crippled mule deer one Thanksgiving morning ( I was headed to Jackson Hole from SLC very early)...one shot behind the head and his eyes bugged out on stems!
I have handloaded for .45 Auto, .45 Colt, .38 Special/.357 Mags, but nerver handloaded for a 10mm, and don't want to fool with any plated bullets which is all I can find. I'm going to gather up the dies and such, and when this drought ends, start loading. For now, I use Underwood, Buffalo Bore, DoubleTap, and got some Littlestone coming. Oh yea, I like to use aftermarket barrels for hardcast, but I don't like the looks of the 6" sticking out, I feel fine with the standard length for my use.

I'm glad they are making concrete changes, however late. I agree, the article should never have been posted, but it was, and it costs them. I like ol dock's writings, but as a Minister, I can attest that there are some plces where Religion and Politics just don't fly...this was one of them. What did someone say...he had a Jim Zumbo moment? lol.

Gear/Equipment / Re: What is your EDC?
November 06 2013 11:33:55 AM MST
I sold a project rifle and paid cash for my G20 Gen4. I "was" going to trade my 29Sf in on it, but had another thought ( ta daa) I rented a G30 at a local range and shot it some, liked it very much. I figured I would trade the 29Sf for either a G30 Gen 4 or a Gen 3 G36. When I went to pick up the G20, lo and behold, in the used gun case was a G30 Gen 4. I was able to swing a swap even across for it! It really fits my hand better than the 29SF, just subtle differences, but enough help. I have it over at my smiths to install a set of Ameriglo Pro operator night sights and a 3.5# connector. It fits my JS kydex holster perfectly ( saved me $65)  I had some Corbon DPX +P 185 DPX on hand ( I really like them) but sent off for some Federal 230 HST ( non +P) to try. My smith had already put on a set of Ameriglos/ 3,5# connector on my G20. I am getting pretty jazzed, ha

General Discussion / Re: Crazy shootout story

Another thing to consider; notice that he didn't have time to fight his way to his trunk gun! Sure, its great to have one, and many times its possible to fight 'to your rifle/shotgun" with your handgun, but how about 'that One time" you can't? A man had better tighten up his mind and get determined 'fast" or risk being murdered or crippled for life...I'd rather eat ice-cream with my grandkids, but best to have a plan, isn't it?
