GOA's webpage sounds similar to NRA, but how many members do they have, and do they have the resources NOW to have the kind of impact that the NRA has had?  And do the libs want to destroy them as much as the want to destroy the NRA?

SAF's webpage says:

"We are dedicated to promoting a better understanding about our Constitutional heritage to privately own and possess firearms. To that end, we carry on many educational and legal action programs designed to better inform the public about the gun control debate."

Doesn't say anything about trying to convince legislators they should vote down gun control bills ... that's where "the rubber meets the road" in my opinion.

General Discussion / Threat to Survival of the NRA
April 27 2019 12:44:00 PM MDT
I've just become aware of an extreme threat that everyone who values their gun rights should be aware of.  The latest issue of the NRA magazine "Shooting Illustrated" has an article on page 68 titled "Critical Update" that I think was added immediately before they went to press.  It has a message from Wayne LaPierre, saying that actions taken by Andrew Cuomo (governor of New York state) will put the NRA out of business if the actions are allowed to continue.  The NRA has filed a lawsuit in Federal court seeking to stop Cuomo's actions against the NRA.  The NRA is requesting donations specifically to help fund this lawsuit.  If this lawsuit fails, the NRA WILL be history, and soon thereafter, so will the 2nd Amendment.  As LaPierre says, "This is NOT a drill".

The S&B jhp load looks like it's in the Goldilocks range. Not too hot and not too cool, just right.

I don't think you can get too hot.  I don't shoot anything but 200 gr Underwood in my Kimber 1911.  And nothing but Underwood ammo in my revolvers (except for my ultralight S&W 360sc .357 snubby ... Mid-range Federals are all I can take in that gun).

It comes down to the chamber size, and all of the after-market barrels are much tighter then the stock Glock

Do the aftermarket barrels shoot as reliably as the stock barrel?  I've always guessed that the well-known glock reliability stems at least partially from their loose chamber fit.

About when did the change occur?

Just and observation;  I think Underwood has abandoned IMR 800-X powder and maybe Longshot Powder too in the 10mm.  If so, those 10mm loads by Underwood should be moved to the "Discontinued" tab in the Master Sheet.

What bullet type and weight used those powders?  And what are the differences in velocities for those bullet types/weights with the replacement powders?

General Discussion / Re: What is your 10mm carry gun ?

Until it was replaced by a S&W69 5-shot 4-1/4" .44mag revolver as my exclusive primary carry, the job was held by my 10mm Kimber Eclipse Custom II.  I used to alternate the cartridges in each mag with various bullet weights, from 150gr to 200gr, all DoubleTap.  More recently, I switched to only one bullet weight (200gr), from Underwood.  I still like the 10mm round very much, but I don't completely trust the reliability of my Eclipse.  I also have a S&W SW1911 Pro Series .45acp that I have set up to shoot .45 Super.  That gun has never jammed, so it may be very reliable (although I haven't shot very many rounds through it yet).  I don't like the .45 Super round nearly as much as I like the 10mm round, though.

So the FBI decided they needed more powerful handguns. They adopted the 10mm Auto, in its full power form, it puts it square between a .357 Magnum and a .41 Magnum.
[...]
For the hand loader it can be anything from a .40 S&W to something right up at the .41 Magnum.

Underwood's loads (which always strive to be right at full-spec) for 10mm and .357mag have about the same energy.  10mm is a long way below .41mag.  Full-spec .41mag is not far behind full-spec .44mag.

I thought that 1911's depended on the forward end of the case encountering the reduced radius in the barrel and resulting in the proper headspacing of the rear of the cartridge properly wrt the "firewall" surface that surrounds the firing pin.  So wouldn't the shorter case slide too far into the chamber, and produce an excessive gap between the rear of the case and the "firewall" surface of the slide?

That 10mm brass in the photos is impressively thick near the aft end (and a good ways from the groove).

More and more I'm thinking the gloves should always be worn when shooting 10mm/hot-loads.

Not an option for those of us who (sometimes) carry 10mm.

My old Vbob did make a trip back to DW to re dress the sear and stop the occasional unplanned double fires.

I break into a cold sweat every time I imagine 9 rounds of 10mm going off in about a second or two ... who knows where that muzzle would end up pointing.

The trick when learning this drill is it feels awkward to do at first unless you rotate the muzzle towards the weak side, potentially breaking 180.

Or rotate your body 90 degrees CW, so that the gun remains pointing downrange (or toward the bad guy).  To make it easy, you DO need to be moving your two hands (and forearms) laterally across the front of your body, in opposite directions, approaching each other, always held close to your chest.

I also always use the slingshot method.

Actually, I don't think that's the correct term for what I do.  I don't grab the rear of the slide between my weak (literally!) thumb and forefinger.  I put my weak hand over the forward part of the slide, well in front of the ejection port, and then pull the slide fully back and release it, letting the slide slam closed.  And the gun isn't held in the firing position ... it is closer to waist-level, and with both elbows well bent ... it's a very easy way to rack the slide, that just about anyone can do.  I think that may be called the "overhand" release method.
