I too load the MT Bullet Works Hard Cast 200gr WFN GC bullet with A#9. Using Win. or Starline cases with WLPs, 12.5gr of A#9 gives me 1262FPS out of a Guncrafter Industries 1911 with 6" Barrel. My son gets similar results out of his DW Bruin. OAL is 1.250.

Reloading / Re: Is 100 rounds a lot??
June 14 2023 09:10:28 AM MDT
Although i have a single stage press, a Redding T-7, i do most of my reloading for handguns on Dillon progressives; 2 550s and a 650.  I can run 100 rounds of most anything in less than 15 minutes or so.  Have been loading on progressives since the '70s starting with a C&H Auto Champ and can't imagine getting along with just a single stage.  Been there and done that!

I thought initially that this thread was about shooting x number of rounds per a range session, not reloading the ammo.

Reloading / Re: Source of hardcast bullets for hiking

I load the 200gr Montana Bullet Works hard cast RNFP GC over a goodly charge of A#9.  Has worked on several bears for my son out of his DW Bruin.

I too go with 200 grr XTPs or 200gr WFN-GC hard cast running a bit over 1200 fps. Used to carry a 5" model 29 with 300gr LBTs in big bear country but the recoil just got to be too much for good double action shooting so we switched to a 10mm 1911 several years ago and haven't looked back.

Having a high mileage body from engaging in rock climbing and other stressful outdoor activities for most of our life we know all about dealing with the pain of getting older.
And, having shot practical pistol since the '70s, our wrists and elbows have paid the price of sending at least 1/4 million major .45ACP rounds down range. Now at 76 we continue to shoot and remain pretty active but have learned that Advil is our friend.

There's a serious flaw in your reloading plan. Reloading for other than one's personal needs borders on insanity. You might look for help at the clinic. :)

Thought about a 327 and have shot one belonging to a friend. LOTS of blast! If I want more power than the .32 H&R Mag, but not up to .44 specs and recoil, I go to a .357 Mag.

For now, our .32s are all .32 H&R Mags shooting either 115 or 125gr cast bullets or 100 gr XTPs.

from the FWIW department; Have a bud in ID who killed a cow elk with a neck shot a couple of years ago with a .32 H&R and a 100gr XTP.  Not even sayin' the.32 H&R is a recommended elk round, but, In the right hands some things will surprise you.

10mm Hunting / Re: best ammo for bear protection?
February 14 2023 09:25:34 AM MST
The best 200gr hard cast bullet we've found is the BHN-22, RNFP/GC from Montana Bullet works. 12.5gr. of A#9 pushes them to 1250fps from our Guncrafter No Name 1911 with the 6" barrel installed.  Recoil is stout but manageable.

I could not get 220gr RNFPs to feed reliably, despite changing seating depths. Anyone else have this issue with the 220s?  Have heard it's a common problem with all guns and the 220s. Just a rumor of fact?

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Which Dan Wesson 10mm to buy

Shooting our sons' Bruin and our Guncrafter 5" gun side by side with the same loads it seems the Bruin is a softer shooting pistol. We have a 6" bbl for our GI gun also and when it is installed the recoil is the same and the extra inch of barrel does not increase the veloctiy significantly.

My son has a DW Bruin that he uses for chasing bears here in the Alleghenies and between us we have a "few" other DW 1911s. The Bruin has been a great pistol; accurate and reliable even with 200gr. RNFP/GC hard cast lead bullets.  All our DWs are nicely detailed and run 100%. The 6" Bruin is easy to shoot with low recoil and the extra inch of sight radius is nice to have.  Our experience has been that the 1" extra barrel length has little affect on velocity.

I'm with blaster!  Having one's own range is a blessing.

Have a DW Bruin 10mm, and a few other DWs.  The DWs are Very nice guns for the money. This from a long time 1911 shooter with more than a "few" in the stable...

Check out Rafter-L Combat leather, Milt Sparks, or Davis leather. IOHO, a properly made and fitted leather holster does not need a strap for retention.  Just sayin'.

Gunsmithing / Re: Main Spring

We have both a DW Bruin and a Guncrafter 1911 No Name in 10mm. Have never messed with varying mainspring weights in all of our years of shooting 1911s. Have over time messed with firing pin stop profiles and varying recoil spring weights.  Run a 20lb in the Bruin and a 22 in the GI gun.

Gear/Equipment / Re: Benchmade Knifes

I have a couple of automatic Benchmades that we've has for quite a while. Forget the names and would post a pic but don't know how.  I think the larger one was called the AFO and was made on a govt. contract a fait # of years ago; it's totally sterile.
