Reloading / Re: Any Body Else Hate S&B Brass?

aOWENc, when the case head and or rim get sticky in the shell holder its usually a sign that the case head has become deformed. In that case the use of vise grips is probably a good proactive protective action to get rid of that deformed compromised, weakened case. Excess pressure in a quality case can cause the same effect. Get rid of the case!

General Discussion / Re: Shooting 15 miles from home
February 10 2021 05:23:46 PM MST
For the last 42 years we have lived about a mile down a farm road and in these 40+ years there have been 2 occasions when a firearm made the ending of the day much different. No shots fired, no real display, but just the presence of the firearm precipitated a hasty departure by two different groups many years apart. Both had appeared back on the farm and had started acting "strangely".
Both groups left without saying good bye.

Mostly dispatching sick raccoons and foxes is the main use of a carry weapon.

For those with time and patience a couple of small dowels and some fine emory cloth, fine wet or dry sand paper can do a very acceptable jpb with little fear of overdoing. And if you would like to ice that cake you can finish the project with crocus cloth.
Wrap the abrasive around the end of a suitable piece of dowel and have at it. Try to follow a random patterns as to avoid dimensional changes. Most of these abrasives do a vastly better job when used wet. Mineral spirits and ATF make a good medium.

General Discussion / Re: What would you get

So you are on a two week road trip with your family when your firearm is damaged beyond repair. So you go into a local guns store to replace it. They have the an assortment of the usual brands. Ruger, Smiths, Glocks etc but ammo is short 1 or 2 20 round boxes of each caliber. What would you get and why?

I would be screwed since the PR of MD requires ALL firearms to be registered, so they have to ship to FFL in PR for background and etc.
Bought my wife a unique Savage 99 like her mother once had.  Shipping and FFL clearance dulled that bargain by a good bit.

So, after I bought the replacement and drove back to the PR, I could probably just gotten another one out of the unsafe.
On the other hand I could have a long gun mailed to me, legally.

Maybe my wife would loan me hers?

Have any of these political doorstops noticed that there were 4.3 million background checks run in January. A new record I believe. You have to wonder at this point how many gun owners they are going to piss off. (I sure hope so, backbones can be hard to find at times).

I've been looking at some SIG .40's and a 10mm. I wrote two sellers who ass 3% for CC purchases asking which form of cash / mail payment they preferred and neither wrote back. No sale!

Do dealers expect to sell when they don't have the sense to answer a prospective buyer's Email?
I never understood why some vendors do this.  Why not just add the 3% into the cost of the product?  When listed separately it seems like an additional tax and turns some buyers away. 99% of the purchases I make online are done that way.

On a 1K$  Sig that's 30$. I really don't mind the $29.48 discount for sending a check. Thats a box of ammo, or a part of the steeply increasing shipping charges.

According to the news this AM there were 4.3 million background checks last month, another record of sorts(Joe are you paying attention). Sure suggests that retailers don't have time to address every communication. And worst case they don't have to reply, the items ill be sold before the negotiations are completed.
The banks are the ones I have issue with.

Not the wisest business move on their part, especially if they want to make any money

Ken

I certainly agree with you,
Unfortunately its a a sellers market currently. Have they gouged on the prices?

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: 10mm SPP
February 02 2021 06:19:20 AM MST
I would think a SPMP would be similar to a standard LPP.mThe max of 13 gr of powder is far less than the 19-20 gr used in some loadings of 357 mag.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Bullet quality vs. accuracy
February 02 2021 06:15:29 AM MST
Bad bullets mean bad uniformity which means bad groups. But so does nearly any other variable. Bullets can be sorted and many BR competitors do just that. Every conceivable variate from wgt to diameter to bearing length. Anything that affects the concentricity of a load will have a great affect on accuracy. Bigger variance = bigger grouping.
In my case a lot of my groups are affected by eyesight, I can get around 50% astonishing groups with 50% of WTH.
Setting a baseline with a known good bullet such as an XTP or a home cast will give you something to compare.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Newbie component questions
January 31 2021 05:40:12 PM MST
BrenTen, you had asked whether there was/were any indicators suggesting a maximum load when choreographing your load development. There seems to be a point reached with most powders where an increase in powder charge does not produce any, any significant increase or in a paradoxical indication velocities have been reported to decrease with an increase in powder. I personally have not seen a decrease in velocity but I have seen where an increase in powder charge produces little or no change in velocity.
Some powders especially double based powder, which most are today, are designed to function within a narrow set of parameters where too much or too little can both have bad results. Spiking pressures are the most common result.

Reloading 10mm ammo / 10mm SPP
January 31 2021 07:15:19 AM MST
Has there ever been a SPP case for the 10mm. With the volume of powder it would seem that a small pistol oe even a small rifle primer might show some advantages. One such being a stronger case head. I notice that some cases when fired multiple times start to smear the stampings-obvious signs of head change, some part due to sliding wear and some due to brass flow. A 556 rated primer would not be the best choice but there are "softer" primers like Federal 205 and Remi 6 1/2.

Steve's Pages lists the 180gr bullet with 5.7 to 6.0 gr of Green Dot. I have used their data frequently but I try to find some verification of the loads. A few cases the max is truly MAX.
Lyman lists Red Dot with some jacketed bullets and most cast bullets. Significantly they also list Bulleye with almost all bullets .
I would feel comfortable with the 5.7 Green Dot load and a 180 gr bullet.I'd only load a few to test run first.

Factory Ammo / Re: Ammo in a cold / warm environment
January 22 2021 10:14:53 AM MST
My wife and I remain at odds about some things, one of which is the pocket search prior to washing machine dunking. Its not uncommon to have a round or 2 of some loaded ammo to get thoroughly cleaned. In several decades of this phenominum I have yet to have a round fail to fire. Handgun or long gun ammo. Shotshells are exempted because even I can find them in a pocket.  All of this ammo has been of the hand loaded form, with no sealing outside of. the interference fit of the bullet and the primer. The record is pretty solid here.

Second paragraph, I have found new brass without flash holes and other defects. So no matter what safety system you have in place there always is the possibility of failure. The two potential areas for failure would be that of failed sealing despite factory' implementation. The greatest potential would be, in my estimation, the introduction of a cold loaded weapon into a warm somewhat humid environment follow shortly thereafter , before evaporation dried the weapon, introduction back into the -*. cases. Worst case scenario would be some moisture coating the powder . This can result in a squib or dud. Primers can be affected but it takes more than a little to deactivate them.

I think your rotation of ammo is still the best policy providing of course we still have access to it in the future. The alternative is if your experience has been continually positive, then just stay the course and rotate out when it seems expedient.

Reloading / Re: 9x25 Dillon issues

I would suppose you could send them a cerrosafe casting of the chamber . They would have the exact within time dimensions of your chamber. Brass can vary a bit due to hardening and springbuck.  I believe Midway and Rotometal both sell Cerrosafe.

Accurates data with AA#5 is 7.5 gr with a 175gr cast bullet or 7.8 gr with a 180 gr Hornady jacketed. Velocities are suggested to be in the 1025-1050 range.  And as suggested a lighter recoil spring might be needed.
On the other hand if she is just going to try shooting the P220, if its functioning as a single shot semiautomatic that may be just fine for the trial stage. Recoil springs for the Sigs seem to be more complex and expensive than for many other SA. Wolff does not think the P220 exists as far as their springs go
