Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Ruger sr1911 Hand Loading
July 09 2020 05:44:48 PM MDT
I've been loading for Ruger SR1911 10mm since shortly after the pistol was released.
Sweet load for mine is 9.0grs Longshot under a Zero Bullets 180gr jhp, lit by CCI 350 Large Pistol Magnum primer.
Solid 1250fps.
I've gone up to 9.5grs Longshot, but really no improvement in accuracy.

Reloading 10mm ammo / 10mm SP versus LP
July 08 2020 07:14:38 PM MDT
A while back I bought some Blazer 10mm ammo and it had small primers. Finally got around to testing primer versus velocity.
10 shot strings measured 15' from muzzle, all brass once fired, 155gr Gold Dot bullets seated to 1.25".
Test pistol was Ruger SR1911, 5".
Data is formatted:
Powder, charge weight
CCI 500, CCI 550, CCI 350, Winchester WLP

CFE Pistol, 8.8grs
1319, 1336, 1370, 1359
CFE Pistol, 9.2grs
1383, 1379, 1409, 1403
Longshot, 9.1grs
1321, 1314, 1377, 1367
Longshot, 9.6grs
1370, 1372, 1416, 1395
AA #9, 15.4grs
1383, 1418, 1445, 1432
AA #9, 15.8grs
1424, 1450, 1483, 1474

As I expected, the CCI 350 loads produced highest velocities.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Push through die
July 08 2020 05:22:10 PM MDT
It depends.
If I'm shooting through G20 factory barrel, then cases run through Lee Bulge buster after cleaning.
If using any other of my 10's, then it's straight to sizing die after cleaning.
Glock barrel gives case head expansion to .432", other barrels stay at or under .428".

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Blazer Brass 10mm is SP!

For me reloading, SP in 10mm is probably going to be loaded with AA#9.
That powder seems to like an SP Magnum primer.
But Longshot with WLP is my go to for 10mm, CCI LP Magnum for loads at high end.

This is a very promising development!
Same or better performance than Gold Dot at 2/3 the cost.
Xtreme site shows these in quantities of 100, hope they plan on selling bulk quantities of 1000.
They also show a 45 230gr, definitely want to test those.

I've come across quite a bit of S&B brass in 10mm and 45ACP, range pickups.
S&B seems to have tighter pockets than other brands.
I like this, as I usually get loose pockets before case splits in my 10mm liads.
Also, have used S&B primers in Hornady LnL AP.
They have less of a radius on corners than other brands, only brand to give me issues in the Hornady press.

Has to do with the 'process' of getting copper onto lead.
Gold Dot uses some kind of proprietary process that bonds the two metals,
others use a pricess that limits speed of bullet because plating will rip off at high velocity.

Speer Gold Dots are not typical plated bullets like Xtreme or Berrys.
I've pushed GDHP to the limits of the cartridge in 10mm, .357 and 44 magnum.
"Regular" plated like Xtreme and Berrys can't handle those velocities.
Raining today, hope to get these Blazer plated to the range this weekend.

Factory 10mm ammo / Blazer Brass 10mm is SP!
May 07 2020 01:53:26 PM MDT
Picked up a few boxes of Blazer Brass 10mm 180gr fmj,
got home and examined it, realized their small primer and crimped.
First SP 10mm I've seen.
Also, think they are plated and not true jacketed,
box has warning not to use in ported barrel or comp.
Usually, that's a plated bullet warning.

Reloading / Re: Accurate no 9 change or????
May 06 2020 04:29:59 AM MDT
Been loading AA #9 for about 5 years in .357 magnum, 44 magnum, and 10mm.
Just finished a new 8# keg, haven't noticed any change in 5 years.

Reloading / Re: No bullets at American Reloading

I can endorse Zero Bullets from rozedist.com.
They're relatively local to me, make a good product at reasonable prices,
and are good people.
Even in current craziness, they've gone out of their way to get me what I need.

Had someone recommend the Remington R1 1911 .40 S&W magazine for the Rock Island 1911 FS HC,
saying it works well and hold 18 rounds vs 16 in Rock factory mag.
Anyone use this Remington magazine in their RIA FS HC 10mm?
Think I know where to get one, would like some furst hand experiences before dropping $35-$40 on a magazine.

It's been my experience that plated bullet manufacturers are overly optimistic in their max velocity limits. I'll use plated in slow 45ACP liads when there's a good sale, but that's it. Some folks claim to have no issues with plated and velocities over 1000fps, I practice at 100yds and have yet to find a plated with acceptable performance at that range.

I think cwlongshot was pointing out there is a difference between case "bulge" and regular case expansion. Bulge is typically caused by less than full chamber support in case head area. Glick is notorious for this. Case expansion is a different beast and to be expected. Measure case just above extraction grove. In my G20, case expands to .431". In Ruger SR1911 and XDM 10, cases expand to .428". Both are acceptable, but the .431" cases will split sooner. The "Glock bulge" is exactly as described, looks like a pregnant women in 9th month. Those cases are scrap, very dangerous to reload.
