Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Black Talon 10mm rounds

The 200 grain 10mm Winchester Black Talon were loaded to 980 fps!  They actually worked as designed with the sharp point claws being a nasty spiral cutting and increasing the bleeding potential.
Shadow school me a little, 980 doesn't seem that fast compared the the 200gr gold dots I'm running at 1200fps were the talons really that much better? I'm probably gonna keep them in the box they came in just for nastalgia I got them from a gun shop owner that had them hiding behind the counter about 20 years ago. I noticed that he had a Glock 20 on his hip and pointed it out and mentioned that I had a 20 and also an FBI 1076 and after a few minutes of us talking he pulled out the box of talons I only paid 15.00 for them. Never opened the box.

I have a box of Black Talons left over from way back when over the years it seems that they really weren't as great as the hype but for some reason are still bringing in money? Just curious as to why and what the box might be worth years down the road?

I noticed this difference when they put out the 2022 load data, you will notice though that the 200gr Hornady jhp lists 8.2gr as max charge also. If you look you will see they changed to the sierra jhc for the 180gr load data so I believe the change is probably due to bullet length and design which caused a difference in pressure. That or Hodgdon screwed up which given the lawyers I doubt the data would still be published online if that were the case. As always start low and work up safely using all means to watch for pressure signs. Just slight differences in brass, primers, or firearm can sometimes make a big difference in pressure.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Went Overboard on 10MMs

I've got a 1076 my first 10, then my Glock 20 2nd 10, then quite a few years later bought a Springfield RO Elite, then a RIA Ultra, and now a Dan Wesson. So now I have 5 more than any other caliber I own. I like 45's also but something about the 10mm.

If you have the money the Dan Wesson is really nice, my second favorite would be the rock island armory 10mm, next from there is my Springfield ro elite (only because it is finicky and it won't run box ammo I have to re crimp everything for it to cycle). I e seen and heard good things about the Springfield Ronin but haven't had the opportunity to run one. If you want reliable go with one of the first 2

10mm semi-auto handguns / New Dan Wesson Razorback

Ok so I've wanted one of these for a few years now that they are discontinued I was worried I may not find one but finally found a new one and bought it. So I got it a few days ago and racked the slide a few hundred times then pulled it apart and cleaned it as I've heard they are super tight on the rails and didn't want it to lock up. I put 100 rounds through it yesterday had a few FTF on the first mag after that not a single hiccup and all I can say is wow I've got a few 10mm but none that shoot quite as nice as this one, I think the trigger and accuracy is what really impressed me. This is my first Dan Wesson firearm. We will see how she fairs after a thousand rounds or so. I was surprised to see that it already came with the flat bottom firing pin stop and I'm not sure what the spring weight is but I'm assuming it's about 21 or 22#?

I paid about 950 for mine new 2 years ago, with the current state of availability I would say you did well. The one I got was an absolutely beautiful gun, the issues I experienced were 1st the feed ramp had a very small lip that would cause all rounds to jam while feeding a little polishing (emphasis on a little go easy)  and the gun started feeding much better. 2nd issue is the chamber on mine is very tight I had to go through and crimp factory S&B rounds so they passed the plunk test on the chamber. After that it has seen about 1K rounds and not another fail to feed or issue. I did put a flat bottom firing pin stop and a little heavier spring as it was throwing some brass and I wanted to be able to collect my brass to reload again.

I just noticed that the Hodgdon website now has much lower reduced load amounts for 180gr with Longshot, but the data for 200 gr is the same as the 180. I thought my old memory was playing tricks on me but I looked back at my old load data book and realized they used to list 8.5-9.5 at 180 they are now listing 7.5-8.4 did the lawyers get them or did somebody screw up when they changed the layout of the website?

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Santa came early

Never played with semi wadcutter but I load all my reloads at 1.250 except my gold dots I have to run at 1.200 for some reason they catch in the mag otherwise.
Also may want to check plunk test I know my springfield has a really tight chamber and I have to use a heavier crimp for the rounds to fit freely. It cause me some issues of not going fully into battery I had some box ammo I was running that I had laying around. I recrimped the box ammo and never had another issue since.

Slamming the slide closed on an empty chamber is hard on the slide and gun.
I would shoot it with the 18.5 before changing anything, my springfield 10mm shot fine with box ammo and 18.5 spring it came with from the factory. I hand load some hot rounds that I fire so I did go heavier on my recoil spring due to this.
Merry Christmas!!
1911 are awesome guns and in 10mm it just makes them even better!

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: 200gr gold dots

I was using a Caldwell chronograph same as I use for my rifle loads it seems to be pretty accurate as I use the speeds to calibrate MOA at ranges out to 1k yards and it has served well. It was about 5 ft from the muzzle for these tests. I think the difference could be the barrel but probably more the design of the gun as Shadow pointed out the slide opening early causing the shearing of the primer flow. I think that brass and primer type plays a part also.

So Shadow I am assuming that means the pressure overrode the spring and flat bottom fps?
Either way I am happy with almost 1200 fps and no over pressure with 8.0 grains of Longshot.

Rounds were fired in a Springfield 1911 RO Elite 5' with a 20# recoil spring, Wilson recoil buffer, and flat bottom firing pin block from EGW.
