Factory 10mm ammo / Trust this ammo or not?
August 17 2019 05:57:39 PM MDT
I had some 2012 Double Tap 200gr and 230gr hardcast that had about 25% of the bullets with severe cold cast wrinkles. DT sent a box of Noslers JHP to replace them. I'm going on a trip next week to Northern Montana (Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness). I realized that the only hardcast 10mm that I have is from that old 2012 shipment. (the correct appearing rounds, not the defects) I am not sure that I can trust them. I have no reason not to, other than they were part of that buggered 2012 shipment. My other 10mm ammo is either Underwood 155gr gold dot, 200gr xtp or Remington UMC 180gr FMJ (cup and core construction). Any suggestions? My other option is  Glock 30 with Underwood hardcast in either .45+p or .45 Super. I no longer can hump the weight of my 500 S&W and a long gun is not going to be practical for me. Whatcha think?

I got a couple of boxes of poorly cast WFNGC hardcast  from Doubletap a few years ago. They were a lot worse than those in the first post here. The distortion came from casting in a cold mold. I know sh!t happens in any production, but with ammo I'd think someone would actually examine what they are sending to customers. What Doubletap sent as a replacement was actually a second example of zero quality control. I didn't want more hardcast, so I asked for some Nosler JHP. The ammo they sent had the hollow point full of some sort of tumbling media that looked like fish eggs, (hopefully they were not tumbling the loaded ammo).

Factory Ammo / Re: Doubletap quality improved or not?

I was friends with Bill Bramlett who owned Ballistic Supply, when they were still in Moses Lake, WA. Ballistic Supply only loaded 500 S&W.  We were out shooting. Besides Bill's product, I was shooting some Magtech 500s (hey, they were cheaper).. Afterwards I asked Bill if he thought I should save the brass to reload. He measured the Magtech stuff and the brass was MUCH thinner at the web than the new Starline that Bill uses. My point being, if I am buying a warmish 10mm load, from any manufacturer, brass quality matters a lot.  Not good that Doubletap is using brass from unknown sources. To be fair, I will check with the McNetts and ask whose brass they use. The internet can easily spread bad news. I want to at least try to get the info directly from the source.

My reason for posting here was to find out if Doubletap's quality control has improved in their recent production. It would also be good to know if their published data now reflects real performance.  Losing them as a source of "real" 10mm was hard.  :(

I had never heard of Parabellum Research until I saw it on the spreadsheet that was linked from this forum. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gex6ItGeWQunVZR9B14mseacyEGoreRRrBEXZavfciM/edit#gid=7  They no longer carry the Beartooth hardcast, but do have a  200gr FMJ.  Does anyone know if their FMJ is built cup and core or is it fully enclosed in a jacket, not simple plating. Has anyone sectioned  the bullet to see how heavy the jacket is? Thanks

I've considered it. I've loaded at a friends place with his instruction. It isn't rocket science, but I live in a tiny place and I don't know if I trust my attention span. :))

The issues that I had with doubletap ammo were best explained by these pictures.  These were typical of both the weights of 10mm Hardcast that I received.

I contacted doubletap and they offered to replace them. I thought, "I better stay away from their hardcast" and requested 200gr Nosler 10mm as the replacement. Here is what I received.

My G30 10MM KKM conversion works perfectly with every 10mm I have tried in it. I had great help from Kevin Mcintire, the late owner of KKM. I simply changed the springs and rod to 23lb Wolff and followed Kevin's instructions for modding the stock Glock extractor and I was done.  I can just swap the OEM Glock .45 acp barrel back in and it works fine as a .45

Those pictures of the Doubletap ammo were from a couple of years ago. Prior to that I bought a lot of my ammo from them. Doubletap pioneered bringing full strength 10mm back. They used to be a good company and may still be. We need all the good ammo makers that we can get. I just lost confidence in buying from them. I figured if those hardcast made it through quality control, what else might be off. Something I couldn't see from the outside. I posted my question here hoping to get an update on peoples experience with current Doubletap quality .

Factory Ammo / Doubletap quality improved or not?

After several boxes of VERY bad 10mm hardcast from Doubletap, I changed to Underwood.  I am getting ready to wring out a new KKM 40 Super conversion barrel for my Glock 30. Underwood is limited on it's current selection of 40 Super. I am still leery of Doubletap quality, because of my bad experience a couple of years back. Does anyone here know if the quality control at Doubletap has improved. This is a "woods gun" for me, so performance matters.

That happened years ago already, when McNett swapped out Gold Dots for Montana Golds, and the first anyone found out about it was after it arrived at their home and they inspected it.  One of the major reason some of us have zero use for DT ever again no matter what they offer or change.
Here are two batches if double tap that turned me into a FORMER customer. One is some 200gr lead and the other is the replacement hollow points they sent when I complained about the hard casts.

Someone tried to make me feel better by suggesting Double Tap included free caviar down in the hollow points, but I'm skeptical.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: two rounds went through the wash

Thanks. I don't know what kind of definitive answer anyone could possibly give. I think I just wanted some place to actually tell people who may have done it themselves. I'll single load them and introduce them to the Costco Laundry detergent bottle that I finished while doing the laundry.  If it doesn't go well, just call me "lefty".

Somehow I managed to leave two factory Remington 10mm rounds in my shirt/pants pocket and found them in the washer. :-[  Shoot em or not?

50 Beowulf. It's the only AR platform rifle that I own.

That is sick.  What is the barrel length, and what bullet weight(s) can you get up to what velocity(s) with it?
Barrel is 16 inches.  The 50 Beowulf fits my liking for big bore calibers that can be tailored to do a variety of tasks.  Everything from 500gr XTPs to Sinterfire fragmented, to the 325gr Barnes 54 cal muzzle loader, "expander" all copper bullet. (the bullet is .50cal and comes in a sabot which I discarded). The great thing about the Beowulf is that it will use many of the same bullets that my 500 S&W mag does.  BTW More velocity does not always mean better terminal performance.

Rifles / Re: The Marlin 1895 in 45-70 Govt.

I have always liked Marlin Lever gun action. They are stronger and simpler than the Winchesters plus the Marlins don't rattle. I own a 28", octagon barrel 93 Marlin, 30-30. It was made in 1913 and is still as solid as it was when new.  I was looking for a full length mag, octagon barrel 1895. The LTD III, came close, but I favor the pistol grip stock over the straight stock for helping me manage recoil. I swapped out the necessary parts from another 1895 that I had and I was a happy guy. There are one or two mods on the gun (sights, stainless follower, limbsaver pad) but nothing else too major.
