Factory 10mm ammo / Re: 10mm ammo availability

We all need to let this high priced ammo sit on the store shelves.  Eventually, the prices will come down.

The 1026/1076's were very reliable pistols.  Look for the 2 dimples under the decock lever to confirm the decock upgrade.  I'm not sure if S&W still does the upgrade.

Look for 2 dimples under the decocker to confirm the factory upgrade was completed.  If the gun is very clean and has the original owners manual and cleaning kit, $1300 is not too far off.  The extra mag is probably worth $75.

My 1076 is a TFE prefix reasonably close to yours and it shipped to the Virginia State Police in 1990.  Yours should have two dimples under the decock lever.

What type of problem are you having with the 1026?

I was instructor trained on the 1026 almost 30 years ago and was issued one for three years.  I believe the 3rd gen Smith's are among the finest 10mm's ever made.  I also put the P220 near the top of the list.  Two dimples under the decock lever will confirm the factory upgrade was performed. Your pistol was likely a law enforcement model, due to the lack of a magazine disconnect.

Your pistol is the first issue of this rare series. I believe it to be the finest of all the VSP commemoratives.  I made an offer on it several months back.  I'm glad it found a good home.  Old Dominion Engravers was led by Ken Hurst, who was a master engraver for Colt.  He also worked for Winchester.  He passed away about a year ago.

The P220 is a 45 year old design.  Any full size steel framed  traditional double action pistol is heavy.  The single stack magazine is one reason the pistol handles so well.  I carried a 5" 1026 on my hip daily for three years and didn't care much for the weight or size.   I still carry the same gun on a regular basis, albeit in a Miami shoulder rig.  It is very comfortable, but requires a coat for concealment.  If you haven't tried a shoulder rig, you should.  You can buy used ones pretty reasonable.  I have four. With the mag pouches, mag capacity is not an issue.

The 60th Anniversary 1026 was sponsored by the Virginia State Police Association and offered for sale to Department members.  It was never issued by the agency.  The Virginia State Police transitioned from the S&W M-64 to the 1026/1076 in the summer of 1990.  They were carried until 1993, when replaced by the Sig P228.

I frequently carry my old Department 1076 in a custom shoulder rig.  Single stack guns work well with Miami style rigs.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Early 10mm Factory Loads

The Remington consistently graphs 1300 fps out of a Sig Legion.  I need to graph the Winchester; it might not break 1000 fps.

Factory 10mm ammo / Early 10mm Factory Loads

Here are some early 10mm JHP factory loads.  I think the Remington is quite rare.  It was introduced in January 1989, with a listed velocity of 1340 fps.  Pretty stout for a 170 gr. JHP, and didn't hang around very long. The Winchester is actually weaker than the Hydra Shoks.

Hornady 180gr xtp advertised mv has increased from 1164 to 1275.  Magtech 180gr fmj advertised mv has increased from 1160 to 1230.  Might this be a trend?
