In Ohio, especially Hamilton County, we need to make an appointment with the sheriff's department.  When you are at the appointment, you present your paperwork and your cash to the clerk and you get your fingerprints scanned.  This happens every 5 years.  If everything is OK,  you are called early in the morning saying to pick up your new license.  This has been my experience.  Other than my original license, this will be my second 5 year renewal.
