General Discussion / Re: Just so you know...10mm brass
January 03 2021 07:21:58 PM MST
Yea this must be a 10mm thing 'cause my Kimber Target II LS  sends spent casings no lie about 27' out at about 4:00 . My gun club now has new handgun "micro bays" which use concrete walls that are about 12' high  and the bays are about 14' wide so my brass just bounces off the wall and falls into a nice pile at the base of the wall.

I learned a harsh lesson back in 2013 when I had to pay $74 for a brick of $hitty Thunderterd 22LR . I took action against stupid political "gun panics". Been investing into handloading since 2014 with small bi-weekly purchases and it adds up nicely ! Shoot "one" buy "two".  Current inventory is 91,000 primers

Well I can see the run on guns and bullets but how about reloading supplies? What is the reason for no primers or powder? I was trying to buy 40 cal FMJ bullets and not only were they out of those but they were out of all 40 cal projectiles. You would think the manufactures would rent some warehousing space and load it up. No instead they run out of stuff to ship in a week. You would think they would learn.  Craig

The current gun panic is nothing new. I'm assuming this is your first experience amidst a gun panic ? I started gaining serious usage of guns back around 2010. The Sandy Hook incident caused an insane gun panic back around 2013 . I had nothing for ammo inventory, and I did not reload at the time. I had to pay $74.99 online for a brick of 22LR . That was the one and ONLY time I took it in the rear to buy ammo. Today deeply vested into handloading and bullet casting i'm sitting on about 86,000 rounds worth of reloading components, and about 900# of lead that I achieved through small bi-weekly purchases as my funds allowed. Far too many gun owners react with fear and impulse at the slightest political unrest, and you end up with another gun panic. Gun panics are of zero concern to me. So my advice when things calm down, buy gradual , buy consistiently because there will surely be another gun panic...

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: KImber loading issue
July 04 2019 07:24:01 AM MDT
My Kimber T2 was experiencing frequent failure to feed when it was brand new. Tried a few different bullet styles of factory ammo. My Kimber is a bit fussy over ammo. I too was experiencing the occasional  1st round "failure to go into full battery". I believe it's from having elevated mag spring pressure on the full mag which causes the slide to loose some energy and not fully close. If I load only 7 rounds I never observe a battery issue. I ended up using some 600 grit sandpaper and some light oil and did some light polishing work on the slide contact areas and the feed ramp. I also polished the inside of the feed lips on my mags. I also keep my Kimber very clean and lubed with Mobil 1 oil. This has made a big difference in my Kimbers feeding reliability. It's taken some time but my mag springs seem to be softening up a bit. Ive got about 700 rounds through my Kimber and it's running excellent . I'm running handloads , RMR 180 RNFP's  13.2 gr of AA9 and i'm at 1210 fps. Excellent cycling, and a very consistent , well grouping load.

    H110/296 with 180 grain bullets.

Yup !

I did some extensive load development in my Desert Eagle 44 mag , and a full house 240gr  load with  H110  yields a dam impressive muzzle flash/blast and a louder muzzle blast than other magnum powders.

Reloading / Re: Stainless steel tumbling media
April 30 2019 07:23:08 PM MDT
Been SS wet tumbling for the past 3 years. Will never go back to dry. Wet tumble is more steps to complete the process but my brass comes out like BRAND NEW. I DON'T deprime, way too much hassle with jammed pins in the flash holes. I don't care about squeeky clean primer pockets . My mix of Palmolive soap and Lemishine removes some of the primer pocket crud anyways. Wash tumble for about 3 hrs, rinse and dry in my food dehydrator and done.

This is getting to be a concern for me with my Kimber Target II LS. My Kimber running full house 180 gr loads will hurl my spent casings about 25'+ at about 4 oclock. I'm just amazed at how far i'm forced to chase my brass. 10mm brass is very pricey even once fired, so NO WAY am I leaving any brass un-policed at my range ! Probably not going to shoot my Kimber much once the snow sets it, same deal not digging through snow to shag brass.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Worked up some loads with aa#9

13.2-13.4 of AA9 yields my tightest groups with the Berry's 180 rnfp. Shoots about  3" eight shot groups consistiently at 50' off a sturdy rest. Getting about 1220 fps from my Kimber 6" Target II.

Maybe I'm just used to lighter pistols, but 41oz empty weight seems really heavy... oh well, to each their own, I guess.

From a carry perspective I agree totally, from a shooting perspective you appreciate the extra weight shooting full house 180 gr 10mm loads resulting in a smooth recoiling platform as is the case with my Kimber 10mm LS Target II. I don't notice my Kimber's empty weight of 42 oz until I immediately handle my FNX45T thereafter. LOL

While I don't own a RIA , I did handle a few years ago when shopping for my first 1911 platform. I specifically was looking for a match grade 1911 chambered in 9mm. I wanted a smooth and mild alloy / steel framed platform to also get my wife involved into handgun. I handled RIA'a , Taurus , SA , and Sig. When all the smoke cleared I went with the SA RO 9mm . Think I payed $725 back in 2015. The SA's are a great compromise of awesome quality and cost value. The RIA's and Taurus felt not "cheap" but just looked and felt of lesser quality. Just recently I bought the Kimber Target II 10mm and side by side against my SA I'd say that the Kimber is just a bit above the SA in build quality, but I also payed $940 for the Kimber.

Shipping live ammo in USPS may subject you to civil and criminal penalties.

It will not as long as you inform UPS of live ammo contents, and it's shipped with the proper "ORM-D" identification sticker.

Gents,

I've been loading the 10 mm for a while and usually with my Glock 40. Buy now u have my new XDM so new stuff is in order..I stick with the same two loads when I hand load. I always use Longshot powder with 9.2 grains for the 200g rnfp or hp and 9.6g for the 200s....does this still equate to a solid load. I have no way to chrono loads for now but this seemed a popular load...what says the rogues gallery ?

I have the Kimber Target II 6" bbl, and I have a Alpha Chrony chronograph, if you want mail me a handful of your loads and I can test them as a favor. My Kimber and your Glock should be very close in velocities.

That 10mm Glock must pack a sharp recoil whack, I have the G22 and it's my least favorite semi shooter. My G22 packs a sharp recoil slap, and for some odd reason I get an annoying trigger slap after about 3 mags fired. My wife on the other hand enjoys the G22 so it's a keeper.

Range reports / New Kimber Target II LS impressions
November 02 2018 04:37:44 PM MDT
Been very busy getting acclimated to my new 10mm taking every opportunity to get to my gun club and shoot, it's getting colder and less daylight so trying to solidify a good load and bullet combo to load over the winter. My most positive takeaway is the advantage of the 6" bbl's longer sight radius. I have extremely poor eyes so I need all the help I can get. I comparatively tested both my Kimber 10mm, and my Springfield RO 1911 in 9mm side by side and I definitely seemed to have a small accuracy gain with the 10mm on paper. The downside is it takes me just a bit longer for target acquisition with the 10mm vs my 9mm. The advantage of the 10mm when hitting steel is it's energy advantage. No matter where I hit the steel in terms of shot placement the targets fall (or flip in the case of the dualing tree). With my 9mm it takes a more precise hit out near the edge on the dualing tree paddles to get them to full flip to the opposite side. You really notice the weight difference when shooting both quickly. It's more work quickly transitioning the Kimber vs the 9mm. You wouldn't think 1" of extra barrel length would make a difference but it does. I'm not going to be speedy mc-speedster with the Kimber, but that's no concern. I'm very happy at the slower controlled precision i'm getting. I'll just save the speed for my SA 9mm 1911. Looks like my most consistent groups are from 9.2g of 800X with the Armscor 180 fmj rnfp. Not been too happy with the overall metering from the 800X, and just today recieved my 8# jug of AA9 and looking foward to some new load work-ups.
