10mm revolvers / Re: 10mm mag ruger GP100

I like the idea but how much 10mm mag can a gp handle?
When the GP 10mm first came out, someone posted on the Ruger forums that Dave Clements refused to
do the conversion, saying the gun would shoot itself apart.

When it comes to big-bore magnums, I go with the single actions.  Much easier on the hand.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: S&B tight primer pockets

I don?t have any of their 10mm brass, but .38s have the same problem.

A Hornady rep told me their primers are odd-sized and cause feeding problems on the LNL AP (as do Winchester SPPs, for me.)

Fascinating.

That must explain why I get as good or better velocity from my 4" GP100 as whats published.

Who pissed in your cornflakes?

And I thought you posted here by mistake.

My bad for assuming people would be sensible enough to stay out of a forum they're not interested in.

That's like a vegan walking in to a steakhouse to announce he doesn't like meat.

While I luv me my 10's, a revolver just doesn't feel right in 10.

Did you happen to notice this thread is in the Revolver forum?

Is it Sierra that makes that bullet?

Yes, Sierra makes the V-Crown.

It appears to give the best performance after the Barnes, which is way expensive:

It'd be great if Sierra would free the 180 V-crown so it could be used for reloading.
It shows the best performance in the gel tests I've read, but is available in the Sig ammo.

I ran some through my GP100 yesterday and was a bear to extract.  I had to whack the ejector rod with the handle of my demooner to get them out.

Running factory moons, it would sometimes start to drag after four rounds.  Then I noticed the last two bullets slipping their crimp.

It wasn't the clips, either.  I ran a couple cylinders without moons.  Still hard to extract.

I mostly run .40s in this gun, but I've shot Sig 10s before with no problems.  The cylinder was squeaky clean at the start of the session.

I can't compare, it's the first GP I've ever owned.

The stocks are absolutely horrible.  They point the gun in to the ground.  I quickly swapped for rubber.

The trigger is OK.  Smoother and lighter than any of several Security Sixes I've owned (I finally gave up on getting a good DS trigger from a six series.)

It's still no match for an S&W.  The Smith trigger is shorter and stays the same throughout its travel.

I hope the GP moves S&W to build an L-frame 10mm.  I know they brought back the 610, but if you're going to go with an N frame, may as well step up to a .44/.45.

Not quite sure how you head space a 40sw in a 10mm correctly with a moon clip. 10mm and 40 both head space on the case mouth. That would mean each round would have to have a stand with some sort of firing pin extension mechanism inside the cylinder behind the round to make up the difference between a cylinder cut for 40sw and one cut for 10mm.

Unlikely.
There's enough of a variance between the rim thickness of .40 S&W vs 10mm rounds to create a gap that can lead to light strikes.  The solution is to use a thicker moon clip with the Ruger GP100 when shooting .40 S&W.  The ones from TK work as advertised, but they're expensive at $80 for 10.  Ranch Products makes moon clips for the S&W 646 that will also work for all varieties of the 10mm GP100s.  They only cost $9 for 10, so that's a significant savings.  And they work with both .40 and 10mm.

Damn, and I spent a fortune on those TK
custom, which requires their mooning tool cause they're tight as hell.

In reply to someone's question about how the .40s headspace: the thick moons essentially turn the .40 in to a rimmed round.

Funny I was just going to post a question about this stuff.  My local range has it for 17.99 per 50 box.  Cheaper than .38 special.

Got one recently. Was disappointed with the moon clips that Ruger supplied although no tools are needed ( I do not want to pay $80.00 for 10 for the same copied clips, although they are thicker.) Already one of the clips will not hold a round and you have to hold it on the clip while you place it in the cylinder. Of course none of the clips I have for my 610 can be used on the GP. Contacted Ranch clips and found they had clips that were made for the S&W 646 but would fit the GP. $12.00 for 8 pp and they fit just fine. They  would not fit on the demooning tool I use for my 625 and 610 which is a breeze and removes 2 each time the handles are squeezed but I sanded the center post that the clip sits on and it works fine now.
Like  it but will need to get some grips that "fill-in" the concave portion of the frame that hits between my thumb and finger and that recoil  does not feel good. Will continue to shoot it by placing my "pinkie" under the handle. Got a line on some Pachmayrs as the Hogue grips for Super RH and GP will not fit this Ruger.
All in all, I like it and it seems to like pretty much any loads I  used yesterday-BD, BE, AA7.

Are you using a CCW de-mooner?

I bought one years ago for my 25-2.  Didn't seem to work with current brass till I dremmeled some off the center post.

Shit, I may have to buy one of these.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Deer/hog load for 4” GP100
December 04 2018 10:52:25 AM MST
New to 10mm.

What's a good medium game load?  I'd prefer expanding bullets an the 170–200 grain range.

Does Winchester no longer make ST bullets for reloading?

Muchas gracias!

I'll take a revolver every time for woods carry.

No amount of capacity is going to make up for the Glock's trigger vs most revolvers.
