Reloading / Re: Testing SR primers vs SP primers
May 25 2023 10:35:35 AM MDT
I 've tried SP, SPM, SR, SRM in moderate 9mm loads.   The biggest difference between the 4 was that Small Rifle Magnum primers would not ignite in most guns.   The only firearm I could get to reliably set them off was an old Luger.   You can run into the same issue with magnum pistol primers if using a revolver with a reduced power mainspring.

Thanks DDRiller, I?ll take a look at that today. I will say, the size of the 20 lbs pot is much more realistic than my little 4 lbs pot

4 lbs pot?   I can't even imagine.   You'd get 2 lbs of bullets out of it and be scrapping the bottom.

The Lee 20 lbs pot is nice.    I have large washers hanging from the knob to help close it once done filling mold.  The pots are known to drip and extra weight hanging there helps keep it closed.   The weakness in the 2 pots I've owned are the 2 screws that the knob/metal bar ride on at the top and bottom of the pot.  These start to back out and the metal bar hangs up on the screw.   Watch out for this and be careful if adjusting the bottom one with molten lead in the pot.

14.8 Grains is probably pushing the limits for regular 10mm loads or more likely a bit over.   12.2 is a starting load and Hodgdon lists 30,800 PSI, while 13.5 is a max load and list 34,100 PSI.   That's an increase of 3,300 PSI for 1.3 grains of powder.  Your adding another 1.3 grains of powder which is adding at least another 3,300 PSI for a total of at least 37,400 PSI.  SAAMI max is 37,500.  However the more powder you add the less free space in the case so adding powder doesn't increase pressure in a linear manner.

How much over 37,500 is the load is anyone guess.   It's not like a round running 37,500 PSI is safe and the gun can handle 100,000 rounds but then going up to 37,501 PSI is going to blow up the gun.   It's all just incremental wear and tear until the gun beats itself apart unless you do something really stupid.

Is it an unsafe load?   Probably not.   Your empirical evidence proves the isn't going to blow up.
Is it going to cause more wear and tear on the gun than a 13.5 grain load?  Yes.
Does this matter to you?

General Discussion / Re: High dexterity casting gloves

I use Bruella oven / BBQ glove on the left hand and an insulated leather heavy duty work glove on the right hand.  The oven/BBQ glove is great for heat resistance.   You can pick up a hot mold and handle it with no problem and it goes up high on the arm.   The leather work works is more durable and great for opening and closing the sprue plate but doesn't offer as much dexterity.

When smelting wheel weights and handling ingots and hot pots the Oven/BBQ gloves work great.

My brother is a welder and I've tried some of his gloves.   They were terrible.  Not as much heat resistance and not as much dexterity.

Is there any evidence out there to suggest the bullet behaves the same way in a body vs a gel block.   Creating ammo that optimizes performance in a gel block will sell ammo, but is it really the best?

Assume you're shooting out of a gun with a 1 : 18 twist rate.   How many rotations will that fluted bullet make in 18 inches?

You can't argue with someone that stupid.   It's best to just say nothing.

General Discussion / Re: CZ, DW & Colt

FWIW CZ brought the DW revolvers back...   They were over priced and sales were poor so they discontinued making them.

Colts revolver sales have been through the roof and are generally hard to find because they sell as quickly as they make them.

Yeah, Colts are expensive but have you seen the price for a S&W or Ruger lately?   A GP100 is $800+, a Kimber DASA runs $875+ and a 686 is $850+.  The King Cobra starts at $900.  Not much of a premium...

I'd also definitely take the over on that 3-5 year guess.

Don't see how that can be a good thing for the Sportsman Warehouse crowd.

The owners of Bass Pro will do well...   Everyone else will be worse off...

I'm jealous of the non-ported barrel.   I picked mine up last November and it has the ported barrel.  The sights take some getting used to.

According to the video firms have until 9/19/20 to bid.  And then creditors have to approve the buyer.  It'd be interesting if PSA is the buyer but it far from a done deal at this point.

Good luck on getting the preemption law passed.  Iowa is trying to pass one to prevent localities from banning accessories such as threaded barrels and "high capacity" magazines.   Iowa law has preemption as it relates to firearms but cities can try and argue that magazines aren't firearms and therefore fall outside the scope of the law.

UBC won't accomplish anything but be a major hassle for law abiding citizens.  Of course the people pushing these laws want to make buying a gun as burdensome as possible so they don't really care.   The crazy thing is there are people who support the 2A and think UBCs are a good idea.

Regarding the high extreme spread - Buffalo Bore has a section on their 10mm ammo page that mentions the use of high power ammo might cause premature unlocking of the breechface allowing the pressure to drop before the bullet leaves the barrel.   I wonder if this is possible with the Hi Point straight blow back design?   I would guess so...

I picked up a 4595 last week and was equally impressed with mine.   I've only put 50 rounds through it so far but I'm already contemplating getting a 1095 which is why I was perusing these threads.

General Discussion / Re: LGS Owner (Idiot)

Didn't ya know they stopped making them years ago...

A couple months ago I was picking up 1923 S&W target model with my boss who was picking up a S&W model 19 when I started looking at cleaning kits.  The shop owner can over and asked what we were looking for.  I told him a .22lr cleaning kit.  He looked around and couldn't find any even though they had .223 cleaning kits right front and center.  I told him the .223 would work but it looked pretty cheap. He explained to me that you couldn't use a .223 cleaning kit on .22 or since they're completely different calibers...  I asked him the bore diameter of each and he had no idea.  This was the store owner.
