10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Some help with 1911 mods
April 13 2017 08:51:29 AM MDT
Thanks dred, I was looking at getting the whole slide (upper portion).  I know this sounds ridiculous, but for $400 or so, in a few steps I can change calibers, instead of messing with the spring and guide and all in my bull barrel.  I could just see parts of my slide flying down the range while undoing the spring, haha.

Right now I have a ramped barrel, would I need to get a ramped barrel for the new barrel, slide, etc.?  I'm not sure if the frame is ramped to accommodate the upper un ramped style.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Some help with 1911 mods
April 12 2017 05:35:10 PM MDT
Hi guys, haven't been around in a while.... got caught up in revolver land!!

While looking at guns to sell, I came across my 1911 RIA 10mm and fell back in love with it, just fits my hands perfectly!!  So, I thought I'd play around with it a bit.

It's a RIA Tac Commander in the ramped bull barrel style (10mm).  I was wondering if it's possible to buy it a new slide in 9mm or 45 acp?  RIA sells them, but would they fit my frame?  And would I just need to buy magazines as well?

Thank you in advance for any help!

While I haventered reloaded too much, because like you, I'm new... I can say thus though, Starling brass seemeS to produce a much better finished product, more than using SIG brass or others (forgot which others now, haha).  The other brass seems to bulge more if bullet seating isn't perfect, etc.  I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die as well, and with Starline, they always come out factory/perfect looking!!  I bought it off midway, try some, I think you'll get what all these guys are always saying about Starline, it never made much sense to me until I got some

10mm Hunting / FL hog hunting newbie advice, please
November 19 2016 10:16:48 AM MST
Hi guys, So I've been hunting for about 2 years, only dove and coyote, though.  Well this year I decided to hunt hog, with my RIA MS 10mm.  Finding them has gone good, taking a shot not so much....  I've tracked 2 down, but I keep trying to get close, for a head shot or lung shot, but they always seem to be behind brush, I've gotten up to 15 yds close, but then they hear me and run.  Thus morning I saw 2 in an open field, they saw me, I took a shot, about 100 yds, no lie-probably unethical, but I did tag one cause he dipped down, but got up and ran like hell.  I caught back up with him to finish the job, he was in a patch of palmettos, again, trying to get closer, heard me and hauled ass, never got him.

So, am I worrying too much about a perfect shot?  If you KNOW where one is behind some brush, do you take the shot?  I just worry about spoiling the meat with a gut shot

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Commander length 10mm
November 15 2016 08:35:25 PM MST
I have a RIA MS (commander length) in 10mm and so far I like it.  When researching,  I guess, at least from what I've read, is that there isn't much difference in accuracy from gov't to commander, except for the extra difference in sight acquisition being a bit more refined, due to the length.  But as for the accuracy of the barrel, from say a rest, they function the same.  And of course you will lose some velocity, but here's where the 10mm shines in my perspective.  Lost velocity in the 45acp would suck, at least for range, accuracy and hunting, just because of the already slower speeds.... but the flat shooting .40 bullet (I think because of ballistic coefficient and speed) in a 10mm.... well, 180 grns at 1150 fps (while maybe would be 1200 fps out of a 5" barrel) still rocks any game out there, and is accurate with less drop is still awesome, so i didn't worry about the extra .75", plus, walking in the woods with it.... I don't miss the extra weight I'm sure...  and if you get a threaded barrel, like me, you may want to stick to the shorter length, to then have overall an almost 5" barrel, instead of a 5.5" barrel on a full slide.

You beat me to the punch sqlbullet, haha, yes, I had to fit this retainong plate, to fit the slide grooved S bit, and enlarge the area to fit the ejector.  At first glance it will look like it fit, but then you'll notice that the slide doesn't go all the way forward, and doesn't allow the safety to go fully up.  I used my Drexel little bit at a time to get it to fit.  Haven't fired it yet, but in testing-slide going forward, safety going up, rackS and ejects bullets, etc. So we'll see....

Gunsmithing / Re: Sights for long distance...
November 09 2016 05:55:48 PM MST
Yeah, Jeff, haha, that's exactly how my rifles are set up, 6 o'clock hold, I like to see my target,  so I don't "float" off target.  I agree with a smaller front post,  unfortunately my RIA has a weird dovetail dimension, so still searching. ...   thanks,  Jeff

Thanks guys, so it doesn't matter if it says for 45 ACP? So long as it's for a series 70?  I ask because I saw 9mm and 40 S&W, but seemed that was for a series 80

Thanks!! And I think I found my problem.... total duh!!! Moment!!  Like I've said before, I'm more of a shotty guy and  rifle guy, lol.

I have my pistol front sight set so to fully cover what I'm aiming for/target... the only other pistol I have is a SIG  P238, and I shoot great with it like this-because it has no elecation, so I'm stuck to shoot like that.  On my RIA, I'm gonna set the rear, so that the POI is more like just shy top of my front sight, more than exactly where my front sight is, which leads my front sight to cover my POI....  this is how my rifles are set, and I hit dead on like this

long explanation for basically a noob mistake, haha

10mm semi-auto handguns / Flat firing pin stop suggestions
November 08 2016 04:40:28 PM MST
Hi guys,

So in reading about flat bottom firing pin stops, I figured I'd try one in my RIA 10mm Com.  Only problem is there seem to be different types, for different calibers?  And then different series?  Pretty much all I could find in forums was what company people used.  So...  would this be the correcruiter style/part?

Obviously thank you in advance for saving me time/postage money

Gunsmithing / Re: Upgrading guide Rod and spring
November 08 2016 11:24:25 AM MST
I have a 1911 10mm and just ordered springs from them,  they're cheap enough to mess around with,  plus, if your gonna change to a different barrel,  like 40 S&W, you might want to buy more than one spring to play with.  They also come wroth an upgraded hammer spring for free-don't know if that apply to glocks.

Overall, I'd buy a few, for different setups, etc.  Worth the extra 15 bucks to not get frustrated at the range/bench

They do!!!  In case anyone else is interested, you have to order the Colt Commander Barrel wroth the correct dimensions/options when ordering.

Thanks, again sqlbullet!!  Always saving the day,  I hope your on 10mm-firearms.com payroll ;D

Gunsmithing / Sights for long distance...
November 06 2016 07:24:54 PM MST
Hi guys,

I have a RIA 10mm in Commander size, been reloading for the first time, and love this thing!!!  That said, while I do like the adjustable stock sights.... do any of you have any suggestions on better sights for longer distances?  At the range, the family and I usually start with handgun, then onto rifle (where my M1a, Sig MCX and Winny 70 .223 varmint barrel RULE the bunch out of my other family members... but enough with bragging...).  But eventually I'd like to get my lil 10mm on paper at 50 yds, and shooting my M1A iron sights got me thinking..... my sights on my RIA would be about the same size as the target downrange, if not bigger..... very hard to hit in that scenario....

Sooooo...... what do long distance guys do on semi-autos?  besides slap on a rail and scope-like the wheel gunners?  File down a true iron sight-ditching the fiber optic?  Honestly, no matter how bad or ridiculous it sounds, I'm up for ANY suggestions, I love long distance shooting, and have done some pretty weird stuff (or so I thought, until I found others doing it) to tighten up my groups, but if it works... it works!!!

And yes, more practice, I won't take offense to that statement....   >:( ;D

They didn't have any advice per say, or anything they could do, haha. But good advice Dred, I pressed them on the issue, and they did tell me that they've heard of people buying the 5 inch Bull Barrels and having a gunsmith cut and thread those.... very interesting to say the least...  One time it might've paid off to buy the Commander series, LOL   8)
