Just bought an ultra FS and am very pleased with what you get for 600 bucks. There is no noticeable tooling marks and the stamp on the barrel is better than older RIA's . I like the VZ grips, then again im a plumber so my hands are used to sharp, hot, rough, surfaces, to each their own. I have had 2 FTF but they were light jams before the feed ramp, im betting its the mag, have ordered 2 wilson mags which is the way to go, 1 more round! I dont know, a high capacity 10 sounds good but if 9+1 cant get er done i would want my AR. As for hot ammo i have been running it before the 500 round mark and i dont think thats a pre-requisite for break in, the FTF was with American Eagle 180gr lite's. For the brass marks on the slide i use JB's bore paste to lightly rub off the marks and it works. Good luck with your Rock ultra, i really dig mine, and am very happy with the purchase.

10mm Hunting / Re: best ammo for bear protection?
September 19 2016 05:26:25 PM MDT
I have a box of underwood 220gr hardcast @ an advertised 1,200fps i would think that this load would penetrate like crazy. A lot of guys who shoot hard cast in rifle's (think 38-55 and such carttidges) say that upping the velocity past 1,200fps or so does not aid in penetration, sometimes the opposite. I think Buffalo Bore has a 230gr hard cast also. Most people carry these loads for defense against bears when bumming around in the woods, would love to see what kind of penetration they would have on the big ornery stuff. :-X

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Rock Island Rock Ultra FS

sqlbullet, yeah i have another 1911 in 45acp but its not really finicky at all, im betting the wilson mags will give better performance plus i think your right about COAL unfortunately no one carries Remington 10mm ammo which i hear good things about. i reload for rifle and just may have to get some 10mm auto dies.    Roguer, i plan on useing the rock ultra in multiple rolls but primarily to shoot some deer, and 10rds of full power 10mil would be an awesome defensive platform, i like Glocks, they're built to run, personnally i dont think one can go wrong in most any platform that is shooting the 10,  ;D

Roguer, i think that dealer is just talking crap, there has never been any issues with Rock River steel and the barrel is fully supported with a polished feed ramp. Now there were issues originally with the Colt Delta Elite and its unsupported barrel and while i checked one out i quickly came to the conclusion that the Delta Elite is just a basic GI model in stainless steel. Now im not putting down the Colt its just that for 1,200 bucks i would at least want some custom features like a similarly priced Kimber. i also checked out the Glocks but man they are really blocky in 10mm, once again just my 2 cents and a glock is a glock it will run like a timex hope it all works out for you, take care...

10mm semi-auto handguns / Rock Island Rock Ultra FS
September 17 2016 07:00:03 PM MDT
Hi guys, new to this site and the 10mm and just wanted to share some thoughts. I bought a Ultra FS and so far im very happy with it, fit and finish is very good and she shoots pretty good also. Only have about 275rds through it and i have had 2 FTF but i chalk that up to either its break in period or the whimpy 180gr american eagle stuff. Full power underwood has cycled like a champ and its FTF has been light jams on the ramp, pull the slide back a little and release and she's good to go. I paid 620 dollars for it and had to special order at my local dealer, i know some guys are picking up used Glocks in 10mm for around 400 bucks but that aint happening in northern NJ. I wanted a 1911 with 5" barrel for its fairly compact size, weight doesnt bother me, and i want to shoot a deer or two with it, but also be able to carry like a normal 1911. The only thing i dont like about it is it only came with one magazine but i will pick up 2, 9 round wilson mags soon. With that said i really like the Dan Wesson Bruin, as a dedicated hunting 10, its sure is pretty but i really cant afford the 2 grand right now, good shooting to y'all and God Bless....
