10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: glock 20 vs glock 40
September 28 2017 10:35:02 AM MDT
In the early 70's, I saw pix in Guns & Ammo of a .45 longslide built from a standard Series 70 Colt; it was the coolest, sexiest pistol I'd ever seen.

Decades later I bought an AMT Hardballer Longslide in stainless, which was cool. The AMT just didn't have the level of quality I wanted, though, certainly not up to Colt's standards.

When the Glock 20 Gen One's hit the market, I grabbed one immediately. It was the kind of "Dark Horse" cartridge that suited my personality 100%. (I think it was Gary James of G&A who first quoted the "Dark Horse" phrase for the Ten).

So, when the G40 entered my field of vision, it was only a natural progression to buy one.......

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: VV N105 + 200g FMJ reloaders

I thank you, too! Many bits of info I never picked up way back in the early 80's when Cooper and Collins were developing the load.....

I got almost all my info from the tidbits Cooper gave out in Guns & Ammo, a mag I practically worshiped. My Mom would roll her eyes & groan whenever a new issue appeared in the mailbox  ;D
My Dad, however, was exactly on the same wavelength as Cooper, having served in combat both in Korea and Vietnam- USMC. I suspect he secretly went directly to Cooper's Corner while I was asleep  :D

Sorry to go tangential like that!

My velocity goal was somewhere between 1000 and Norma's masochistic-and-unnecessary 1250-1300fps with 200g FMJ. I was happy with 1100 to 1150. All the oomph I'd ever need and then some.

I loved the Glock 20's large grip area, which although it's really a bit too big for my hands (I'm a Southpaw), really soaked up the recoil nicely, especially with the stick-on sand-surface grip panels. I believe in training on firearms, not whittling them down to make the wussies comfy. So I damned well learned to handle the recoil of 200g + 1150fps.

I knew from an engineering standpoint that 1911-style pistols in 10mm, even loaded low, would beat the piss out of the lockwork, and it did, even in tough grades of stainless alloy. So I never even considered a 1911 in Ten.

Sadly, though, the first Generation of Glock barrels had a major design flaw: a section of the chamber that was thin, and might give way with hot loads. And did! There was a reloading outfit in my area called Pony Express Reloaders, who not only sold gear and components, but also made ammo for certain police departments and MN Highway Patrol. This was the Era of "Oooh, the FBI's got 10mm Auto! We gotta get them too!"
There was a bulletin board near the entrance to the shop, and one day I came in for some .308 stuff or somesuch, and saw the board plastered with pix of blown chambers, and the casualties produced thereby. Scared the piss out of me  :o, so I ordered a Bar-Sto that same day! Naturally, Glock rejected all intimations of faulty engineering or safety issues, to save their Heinies from massive liability suits from the police depts and civilian reloaders. They must have had some clue of potential troubles, though, because the first issue instruction manuals-and all thereafter- expressly forbade handloads of any sort.

Anyway, my Glock 20 (and soon G40) of current specs will go with me to the grave  ;D

Reloading 10mm ammo / VV N105 + 200g FMJ reloaders
September 27 2017 10:58:34 AM MDT
Noobian here, so this topic has probably been beaten into the ground by now........

My reloading goal with my Glock 20 was to create what Jeff Cooper and Whit Collins would have called the 10mm Auto equivalent to .45ACP Military Ball ammo.

What I finally decided was good for both me and my Glock was Vihta Vuori N105 and Hornady 200g FMJFP (FP=Flat Point).

I'd really like to get some feedback from those reloaders who have a reliable chronograph what powder charges and velocities you're getting with this powder/bullet combo.

My ancient Oehler was circa 1978 or so, and the skyscreens were squirrelly to get set with the proper light level, so I'm not sure if I can really trust my old data.

Thanks- your info would really help!

From who? And where? What Company?

I'm going to need something for my G40, too, fairly soon.

Points taken.

With my G20, I was shooting Hornady 200g FMJFP, with VV N105 powder. My 10mm handload equivalent to military ball ammo.

The backdrop was a low area of swamp muck. Those Hornady's plowed a huge furrow, so it was easy to find the slugs.

90% weren't even deformed, unless they hit a random rock. I mic'd them, and except for rifling engraving, they were still to spec.

I see Hornady discontinued the FMJFP.  Booger-eating Management  >:(

Beautiful leatherwork!

Haven't seen anything yet for Southpaws, though. Only the Bianchi M12/UM84 will work for me, after I modify it a bit for the longer slide.

Longer barrels with the G20 always looked awkward and ugly to me. The G40, though, is a gorgeous gun, like a thoroughbred race horse.

I'm one of those Old School Geezers that had Jeff Cooper as a Mentor, so I never much cared for scopes on any pistol. Or "new-fangled" sights like Trijicon, Red Dot or whatnot. And I never used handguns for hunting. Just my gun philosophy; doesn't apply to anybody but me and a handful of my Generation or older.

Looking through the latest Brownells offerings, I can't find the sights I used to use on my G20, which I really loved. They were Millet, with a white outline adjustable rear, and a recessed white line for the front........guess I'll have to keep searching! Whatever I use has got to work with an issue M12 holster; I found a way to lengthen the nylon shell to cover the open muzzle. Sharp sights will definitely catch and rip that nylon for sure!

Thanks for the reply! I'm pretty much a Noobian on this forum  ;D

Twilight Zone - this is exactly the question I was going to post myself.......kinda spooky.

I do a lot of backpacking/hiking/backcountry skiing (no worries, Lads, nobody would call me a candidate for the Sierra Club)
and I carried a Glock 20 3rd Gen in an M12 issue holster, with the M12 mag pouch modified for those fatass 15-round mags. My rounds were handloads, 200g Hornady FMJFP & VV N105 for an average vel of 1150.

The truth is that my odds of crossing paths with a grizz in northern Minnesota were exactly ZERO, but there was always a chance I'd be fortunate enough to do some true wilderness stuff in Alaska, so I chose the sledgehammer 10mm for a sidearm.

A rifle would have been a more practical weapon, but I'm one of those Loons that take everything but the kitchen sink in my pack (or sled), and I'm already loaded down with enough gear...... ;D

I've been away from shooting for the last 5 years or so, and I had no idea there was such a beast as a G40. Gorgeous gun!......must have!

Going to have to modify an M12 for the longer slide. Pity I don't know of any shop capable of working with this kind of nylon stuff  :(

Likely I'll be checking in here a lot. Best forum for 10mm I've yet seen!

Gear/Equipment / Re: Glock mag jams w/Hornady FMJFP?
January 18 2013 05:50:51 PM MST
Thanks for the info- it's appreciated.
I seat right at 1.260" and I never have a feed problem, the rounds are just hanging up in the mag itself. I loaded a batch of exact duplicate spec dummies, ran 'em through a dozen times at least and the problem remains......

The bullet noses aren't scuffed and the steel insert on the forward inside part of the mag shows no copper tracing you'd expect if the OAL was the problem.

I'm going to test another mag with the same routine- so far it's been only one mag with the problem.

Gear/Equipment / Glock mag jams w/Hornady FMJFP?
January 14 2013 10:14:20 PM MST
I've never had a factory Glock 20 mag jam of any kind ever, until recently. All my reloads use Hornady 200g FMJ Flat Points /"truncated cone" bullets- and they're all right at the spec for OAL.

Anybody else have mag jams? Of any kind?

Questions/Suggestions / spreading the Glow Gospel
November 30 2012 01:43:31 PM MST
I'm a Glock 20 owner and have something to benefit "Our Gang".

If you use full-power loads, your likely to use grip panels/decals for better control. Here's a tip: paint one of the panels with glow-in-the-dark paint, the side you cover with your strong-side hand.

Murphy's Law dictates that the time you will ever need your Glock 20 for defence- or any gun for that matter- it will be fumbling in the dark. http://glowinc.com/ makes the best glow paint on Earth. This stuff will glow brightly for days, given light every now and again. Your gun will stand out like a searchlight in the dark with this stuff-trust me.

I didn't come up with this idea - all I can claim is to know the best glow paint- it works.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Hornady stinks
July 27 2012 11:38:29 AM MDT
I very very rarely get worked up about anything, but this really bites me..... >:(

Sometime last year, the pinhead Korporati at Hornady decided to discontinue their #40077 200-grain FMJFP bullet. I suppose their Profit Margin on that particular product wasn't obscene enough to please them.

I shoot nothing but full-power loads in my Glock 20. If I wanted a Weenie gun I would have bought a .40 Smith. So basically, I got the shaft. Sierra used to make a 190-grain FMJFP, but that too is discontinued. Another issue of profit, no doubt. May the bastards save enough to buy the CEO a new Austin-Healy  :-*

I used to hold Hornady in high esteem. No longer. They'll never get another penny from me. Sorry to vent like this, Guys- time to stick my head in the water trough!
