Factory 10mm ammo / Best place to buy Armscor & PPU?
July 29 2012 09:27:04 PM MDT
Friends,
Is Cheaper than Dirt (yeah right) the only online dealer with Armscor 180gr FMJ 10mm?  Their shipping is almost $40 to Florida for a 1K case.   Where is the cheap but weak PPU stuff?  I could use some brass if I ever start reloading, which at this point I may have to.
Really bummed the bulk order deal didn't happen.   :(

Thanks for any leads.

You might also consider the FEG AMD-65 at Bud's:

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/756/products_id/411545173/Rifles/Century+International+Arms+Inc.

They have the original FEG receivers with the mag dimples and the cool folding stock with what appears to be the original chrome lined barrel.  If you want to mount a Red Dot there are many mounting options but a simple railed handguard from a quality maker such as Midwest should cost about $90.

Chinese AKs were mentioned earlier, good luck finding one now.  Those babies were considered junk in the late 1980's by gun snobs who never shot one.  The Chinese Norincos and Polytechs are second only to the Finnish Valmet rifles in quality.  A Chinese AK built in the same factory as the regular military AK series is like a Luxury car compared to the Econobox hatchback of the Romanian AK in quality.   That said, the Econobox still runs fine, it just isn't a Premium car/gun.   I have a Pre-Ban Norinco Sile import type 56S that is a sweet shooter.  Never selling that one.

Try the AKfiles.com forum for more info.

The Romanian guns are rough but good due to the original chrome lines barrels they are imported with.  Most AK type rifles being sold in the US today are being built from kits with US non-chrome lined barrels.   If you can find a Romanian Draco AK pistol snag it as they are completely Romanian (no US compliance parts) and are a hoot to shoot.
You better hurry though.  I can almost guarantee there won't be any new gun control measures enacted before the elections (don't want to piss off swing voters) but the paranoia combined with some deadbeat gun dealers scaring buyers (buy it now before they ban 'em all) will drive prices through the roof.   You may already be too late if you are a buyer looking for AR receivers, I don't know of any retailers with lowers in stock.   But that was the situation last week, before the Colorado shooting occurred.

Sorry, but if you waited this close to the election to buy black rifle stuff you only have yourself to blame.
Myself, instead of panic buying (which is what I did after the primaries in the summer of 2008) I'm planning on selling some of my extra stuff and making a few $$$.

Good Luck, let us know what you get.

I'm in for 1K rounds if the price is right, that is, south of $400.  I'm mighty impressed with Underwood though so it would have to be cheaper than that.   Thanks for the effort to put this together.

Well...I guess I am searching for a new search engine.

Scroogle.org was a good one but they had to shut down.

I dislike the fact that Google gives you a unique tracking cookie with no expiration.

I use privatelee.com when I'm home and startpage.com when I'm at work. Both delete your privacy info (or so they say) and don't leave tracking cookies like Google does.

Startpage is my go to search engine.   F@#K Google.  They're the new Big Brother.  You know Google has contracts with the NSA and the State department/CIA to supply search data info?   As in what people are searching for by region, zip code etc.   No joke, look it up.

Also you should be running FireFox and using some of the sweet plugins for Firefox  like Ghostery which blocks the companies which track you online, and lets you know which companies and websites are doing the tracking.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Thunderbird Cartridge Company

Thanks for the info and the range report/Chono results!  Great to see another source for 10mm ammo.  Unfortunately his shipping prices are a bit higher than I'm comfortable with.  He wants $35 to ship 100 rounds of 10mm to Florida FedEx ground.  A little better if you buy more, shipping on 500 rounds is right under $50.  A bit too steep for reloads in my opinion.   I can get 1000 round cases of ammo shipped from J&G Sales in Prescott AZ for that price.  He must be in a little town, the shippers always stick it to you if you're not in a big city.   I wish I lived closer than the East coast.

Gear/Equipment / Re: What holsters are your favorites?
July 18 2012 10:19:36 PM MDT
Andrew Johnson at AKJ Concealco makes an awesome IWB holster with a really neat front strap that he has a patent on.
Unfortunately he is not in the best of health so he might not be making holsters for much longer.  Highly recommended.

http://www.concealco.com/miva/merchant.mvc

Jim Murnack at FIST holsters has a bunch of neat designs and he makes his stuff out of nice thick 8-9 oz leather, as well as kydex.
He uses the same heavy duty spring clip that Garrity does, it really works well.  Jim is a neat guy, very innovative.

Look up Nick Matthews in Texas (last I heard he was in TX).  He makes a really nice IWB leather holster with an aggressive FBI tilt which makes concealing large frame handguns a snap.   I have other favs, give me some time and I'll add them to this thread.

Gunsmithing / Re: Recoil Springs

Great info as usual DM1906!  So since I plan on a steady diet of hot Underwood 135gr, 165gr, and 200gr 10mm loads for my G20, how many rounds should I expect to get from a flat spring in the 22lb weight?  I was going to order some springs and I don't want to order too many.  I was thinking 2 or 3 max, is 22lbs about right or should I opt for 24lbs?

Wow, that a clean early G20 LongShot!   Two digit serial prefix, one of the first runs.  Have you have the six part upgrade (recall) performed by Glock?  Your serial number falls within the pistols affected.  Basically it consists of a new extractor, spring loaded bearing, firing pin safety and spring, firing pin/striker and trigger bar.  It makes the gun safer but Glock won't call it a recall because they don't want to pay the shipping to fix nearly 500,000 pistols.  They or a certified Glock Armorer will perform the upgrade for free though if you get the pistol to them.

Thanks for the info!  I have one of the old Federal conversion barrels to shoot 9mm through my G27, they were pretty good.  I wish I would have grabbed a few more before the company closed down.  I believe they were made in Korea.

Beautiful.  Thank you sir very much for a factual, honest post.  This is the type of first person information I was looking for, I'm going to give LWD a shot.

Awesome video!  That guy did a very professional job, I'm going to have to check out his other videos.  I'm very impressed with Mr. Underwood's offerings, I wish his company all the best!

Thanks for the welcome and the help!
Could you elaborate why you aren't a fan of KKM anymore?  I've read the chamber on the LWD barrels are actually a bit tighter than the KKM, but that the LWD barrels aren't finished quite as nicely as the KKM internally.  I've also read unflattering comments about LWD long return/warranty process as it relates to their barrels.  I've bought from LWD before without issue, just never a barrel.  I'd love to save $55 bucks though!  I'm most concerned with chamber support and who has the most of it.  Could you share your experiences with the LWD barrel?  I assume you use one.

Thanks!

Awesome deal!  You say the rookie cop bought the G20 two weeks ago?  Can you look inside the little envelope in the box with the spent cases from the factory test fire and report on the date listed?  I'm asking because you stated "the chamber support in the ramp area is fabulous".   My Gen 3 G20 circa early 2007 barrel support is OK, but I wouldn't call it fabulous.  Since you have an aftermarket barrel for hunting, are you saying the stock barrel in the new G20 has an equal amount of chamber support as your hunting barrel?

If so I might have to look into a new Gen 4 G20.   Pics would help if you have the time.

Thanks a bunch!

Hello friends,
I already have a GEN 3 Glock 20 with the finger grooves and light rail, but I've always loved the look of the early Glock without the rail or grooves.  The pistols just look "cleaner" to my eye, I actually think they look quite elegant from a design standpoint.  I own a very early import ('86-AK prefix) "pencil barrel" Glock 17, as well as one of the first Glock 21 pistols (WH prefix) with the 90 degree extractor cut in the slide.  I know the Gen 3 and newer frames are the strongest, but I like the old school stuff the best.
With that said, I know of a little shop with TWO early Gen 2 Glock 20 pistols which have been sitting in the case for nearly two years.  The owner told me they were both sold to him by the same guy at the same time.  They look to be in average condition, no boxes, one mag apiece.  He has them priced on the label at $450 each.  I'm considering offering $600 cash for both pistols or $350 for one.  I really don't NEED three G20's but what the hell?
School me on any issues the early G20's might have, I've read the chambers in the early pistol might be quite a bit looser than the newer guns, which aren't exactly tight to begin with.  Should I just plan on replacing the barrels on these guys?  It kinda sucks to (hopefully) snag a Glock 20 for $300 only to have to put another $125 into it just to make it safe to shoot full-power stuff.

I read a thread over on GlockTalk about a guy who had a Kaboom with an early G20 and the stock barrel, it kinda has me concerned.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance
