Gunsmithing / Re: Witness reliability
April 01 2021 08:13:00 AM MDT
I have a 9mm, 40 S&W and a 45 acp (with a 38 Super topend) Witness and they have all been very reliable especially the 45 acp.

I'm really having fun with mine, the first two magazines through it had a few problems but starting with the third magazine it has been running like the proverbial sewing machine. I chalk that up to new gun syndrome.

I would like to say that was 25 yds but it was 20 yds. Mine had some bobbles with the first two mags through it but straightened out after that and has been 100% so far since then. Hopefully yours is a case of new gun syndrome and will fall in line.

Man I know what you are talking about, at our range in Hawaii a guy used to come and shoot and I believe his name was Kermit Keys and he would stand by his bench with his carrying case (wooden with the slant cut lid) opened up with his spotting scope mounted on the top edge of the lid and put his left hand in his rear pocket then rest the muzzle on a pad on the bench and occasionally raise his 1911 and fire one round at a time then rest his pistol on the pad and lean over and look in his spotting scope then go through the same process again and then shoot groups (25 yds I believe) that I would be lucky to come close to at 3 yds.

Ok now, I know these aren't that great as far as groups go but here they are, I fired nine rounds at the first target with the Delta Elite at 20 yds, yes I did staple it on upside down.

Next I fired eight rounds (I think it was eight) in the Ruger SR 1911 10mm at 20 yards also,

The eighth round went somewhere it wasn't supposed to go, still ain't figured that one out. This one was stapled upside down also but got turned when I uploaded it.

Next time out I will have to take my portable shooting table with me, these were shot standing. They would perhaps have been better but the wind was blowing, I had something in my eye, I didn't get much the night before and I was hungry, yeah that's the ticket.

10mm semi-auto handguns / New Ruger SR1911 10mm

I just picked up a new SR1911 10mm and at first didn't like the performance. After a breakdown/inspection/cleaning/lubing it was out to the back porch to let loose a few rounds. The first mag had failure to feed with the round hung up half way into the chamber, when I pulled the slide back to clear it three rounds flew straight up out of the gun. Second mag just needed a bump on the back of the slide to fully seat one round, after that I fired about six magazines with no problems. I didn't have a target set up so I was just plinking at rocks and sticks out to 65 yds and it shows promise in the accuracy department. I changed out the black grips (prefer the double diamond wood) for some decent wood grips. From the Factory the trigger broke at a 4 lb pull over a ten pull average with a moderate amount of take up with a decently crisp break and some over travel. The trigger does have an over travel adjustment screw so that can be taken care of, overall it's a pretty decent trigger for a production gun. Hopefully I can get some range time this week and can take my Delta Elite and SR 1911 10 mm both and compare them.

Pardon my ignorance but what is a 'vice gun', is that referring to one like Sonny carried part of the time on Miami Vice?

I have been using some Power Pistol lately and am liking it real good, don't know if I should get some Silhouette or just stick with Power Pistol. I'm thinking of sticking with Power Pistol.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Used up all my WAP

Well I finally used up the last of my Winchester Action Pistol powder today with some Extreme 180 gr HP bullets, man I'm sure going to miss that powder. It was very accurate in my Delta Elite. Why did Winchester stop making it? When did they stop making it?

Good thing it all turned out ok, in my 40 yrs of reloading I believe that is the first time I have seen that myself. I shoot a Delta Elite and a Wyoming Arms parker 10mm as well as a Buckeye Sports Ruger 10mm/38-40.

I just ordered 500 so I should be good for a while. I probably should have ordered a couple thousand.

No bullet in mind as of now but I may have to give the Extreme brand of bullets a look.

Reloading 10mm ammo / 10mm and plated bullets............

Is it the general consensus around here that plated bullets in the 10mm need to be kept at or below 1200 fps? Thanks for any information.
