Carnuba RED.....also use a lot of traditional ALOX from the same folks....I like the smoke and the ALOX smell...very traditional with Keith style slugs in a revolver.

General Discussion / Re: How Far?
April 01 2018 12:04:48 PM MDT
My gun club has been doing an impromptu, very casual, LR steel shoot on Wednesday afternoons. We shut access off to one set of rifle ranges, thereby adding 550 yds to the berms. We can shoot steel from 575 out to 1260 yds.
I got interested in it 4 years back and my trek through the LR world has been both  educational as well as expensive.

One HAS to have the right tools for the job, an accurate rifle in a chambering that's LR oriented. Good glass both on the rifle as well as for Your spotter, and a knowledge of ballistics and how weather affects yourbullets.

Basically no matter what You shoot...once your past 800-1000 yds it's all about reading the WIND.

We have some guys that can make groups at 1K yds that would make 99% of us quite happy as a 200 yds group with a varmint or hunting rifle.

So anything at Shot having anyone going for their wallet?

SIG P365...in line for one already. I didn't want to be a Beta Tester, but want I one by the time warm weather hits. I think they may have this figured out. And it will run just fine.

Also interested in the 10mm NOVESKE. Not a fan of the paperwork and BS to buy an SBR.....So may pass and get a Zenith MP5 clone instead.

Otherwise....nothing REALLY tripped my trigger.

I did three days at SHOT , thought I saw EVERYTHING at least five times.

NEVER saw a NOVESKE logo anywhere. ZERO talk about this gun, etc.

I'm sure, knowing NOVESKE , it should be right....... but it will be expen$ive.

The 10mm is SO POWERFUL no magazine was able to contain it. Hence the shortage.

General Discussion / Re: I've strayed a little...357 Sig.
October 10 2017 08:35:51 PM MDT
An eon ago I was a State cop here in MT. We shot a LOT of road injured game and livestock, mostly deer.  When we carried the .357 mags it was a simple chore.
Then we switched to 9's and 147 gr subsonics . Killing injured animals become a bit tougher. The .357 mag REALLY put them down.

Several years later, we went to SIG 229's in .357 sig and WW 125 gr HP's.  It was as if we had the old .357 mags again. Put down deer, elk, etc .....FAR quicker  than the nines.

The .357 sig is a neat round. When I was a Firearms Instructor I was around tens of thousands of rds running through autos....I swear I never saw a .357 sig fail to feed, or eject.
The bottleneck case design serves a purpose.

Been loading it for years. All one has to do is make sure You have a .357 sig, specific slug  and use a good taper crimp.

Deer are not tough to kill. I've killed a mess of them with handguns over the years. With three mature elk* and a few antelope thrown in as well.     (* Taken with a .454 Casull)

I keep shots to what I'd call old time, traditional bow range if possible. Meaning 25 yds or less. I'd keep shots to whatever distance YOU can keep all shots CONSISTENTLY into an 8 or 10 inch plate.
If that's 25 yds....Then that's your max range.

As far as WHERE....the heart/lung area is big and a good hit to either organ is a sure killer. Stay away from head shots as it's too risky. I've seen elk and deer with jaws shot off, etc. A cruel, lingering death that no animal deserves.

Bullets.  I have zero input as to the 10mm. Closest to the ten would be the few deer and an antelope I took with a 6" .41 magnum and 220 gr, Keith SWC slugs.  The vast majority of my deer were killed with the .44 Spcl/.44 Mag , again, with Keith style SWC's.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: "New" Bren Tens
October 03 2017 07:27:51 AM MDT
What are they using for magazines I wonder?  THAT was THE issue back in the day...one got the gun....but mags were unobtanium.

I think the entire Bren ten concept is simply cursed. NEVER to truly become available or mainstream...EVER.  LOL.

I'm an avid S&W collector and a fan of their 3rd Gen autos. I was an Armorer for my Agency when we carried 5903's.
We were like the old Maytag Repairman commercials....NOTHING to do. Nothing ever broke!  The 1000 series is the same.

I've got a 1006, a 1076 and a 1026. The first 2 are my favorites.

Springs and some small parts still available. But MAGAZINES are an issue. Not out of the ordinary to see clean/new mags sell for a hundred dollars.
Even old mags are bringing 60-70 bucks.   I have a dozen or so for three guns, so I'm OK.  But mags...not wear/breakage, is in my opinion THE issue with the 1000 series Smiths.

Snagged one of the Lipsey Specials from my LGS over the weekend. Basically a 5", all steel, sig nite sights, but in FDE with black controls and black G-10 grips.

Shot fine today, very accurate and zero issues. Did have to push the sight over a bit as it was shooting to the left.

Good Lord but talk about POSITIVE EXTRACTION! It tosses cases 30-40 FEET. Had a hell of a time finding half my brass. Have to figure out something for THAT issue.

Like it...may send it off to The SIG Armorer for a trigger job. A little creep, hope it goes away as it breaks in.

I waited too long to get one. But happy with this model, exactly what I wanted.  Now to build a kydex rig for it. My project for next week.

As in most of these silly bear threads very few of the posters have ANY actual experience with large, aggressive bears.

I'd bet that one could dump a mag of 10's into a bear and unless you made a solid CNS hit the bear would still have you. Hitting the brain on a moving bear is going to be rather difficult.

Bears seldom give warning, generally are on  you in an instant. So unless you have you weapon out, at the ready...you are toast from the get go.

They are insanely strong and resilient.  Bears have taken hits from high powered rifles and have survived for years afterwards.

Here's a Montana grizzly in the wild.

 Thanks shadow.

I loaded up ten with 14.0 of AAC #9 and they fed/functioned just fine.

Too windy to get the Oehler 35 set up but they seemed to be fairly stout.

All I'm looking for is 1200 fps with some accuracy...these seemed to be there.

The wide flat nose is exactly what I am concerned about...otherwise I'd load to the industry standard 1.250"  and be done with it.

I was hoping someone else had been down this road before and could save me some time.  Currently too damned hot out to fool around shooting some test ammo. WHY I am down in the 65° basement loading ammo :D

What's a good OCL for the Montana Gold 165 gr FMJ flat point bullets in an S&W 1006?

Whats a good powder as well to get an accurate 1200 fps load?  I have AAC #7 and #9. As well as a pound of Blue Dot and a mess of faster pistol/shotgun powders.

Thanks in advance.
