Use the IMR website:
http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol

The load data I have seen from Lyman's Cast 4th edition to Lee have suggested anywhere between 7.6 grains and 8.6 grains (max) for that weight.  You will probably not find an exact load with your bullet and powder coated, so you will need to develop your own from similar loads (start low, work up).

Whatever you determine your start load to be, it should be around 7.6 grains and your max should be in the 8.6 grain frange.  If not, double check your recipe.

Do NOT use Hornady data for anything but Hornady projectiles.  Even then, I found their starting load for 800x 180 grain HP to be almost too hot (9.2 grains).

From my notes, around 8.6 grains should get you in the 1200fps ballpark, but be wary of switching lot numbers.  I have found large lot-to-lot variations with 800x, so I do a partial work-up with every new lot.

What do yall think the chances are of getting a lemon gen 4?  Is it like 1 in 10 or more like 50-50?

Can said issues be fixed with aftermarket springs and barrel?  I need the smallest grip i can get.

Ok, new question:

Gen3 SF or Gen4?
I need the smaller grip that either would provide.  Have they worked out the issues with the Gen4?

Be careful with that 800x.  I believe it is temperature sensitive.  Some loads that showed no pressure signs and were ~1320fps on a mild day were scary and 1400 fps on a hot day.

I'm pretty set on a G20 now.  Especially since I think I can find a grip size that will work.

One last question, would y'all recommend switching out barrels?  I plan on reloading some full power loads.  My concern isn't so much that I'm casting for it, but about case life and possible Glock smiles.

Thanks,

0.4115" crimp...

Why do manufacturers put such a tight crimp?  I thought you started losing neck tension after a certain point...

I tried a friend's gen2 G21 this weekend, mainly for fit rather than recoil.  I wasnt quite happy with the grip but it wasnt bad.  Knowing that, I think a gen3 sf or gen 4 should fit nicely

In the schools around here, kids are supposed to go into the fetal postion, covering the back of their neck.  A friend's son was suspended for raising his arms to cover his face.  Didnt even throw a punch.

When going plated, I use cast, fmj, or hp data, whichever is the lowest.  I then just work up to my target velocity.  Most of the time, plated seems to match fmj data rather than cast data velocity wise.

Shadow .....enjoyed the story , thank you ....
..also would like to know if it would be safe/wise to use that load data.i
As with all loading, start low and work up.  In this case, start with published load data, work up to max, and if you feel adventerous, work very slowly up to that load.  A change in ANY componants could be dangerous at these levels.  We don't know what primers were used, so we have to start over.

Thanks.

I'm just worried that I won't like the recoil once I buy it.  I don't want to piss off the wife even more [from buying it in the 1st place] by having to sell it or have it be a safe queen.

Honestly, I'm fine with any amount of recoil, as long as it isn't "shocking", like when you miss the nail with a hammer and hit the handle against the board.  That bone jarring shock you get from full power low grain 357s in lightweight wheel guns I can't stand.

I recommend checking Hornady's load for 200gr XTP.  Consider their start load as max for cast and reduce by about 10%.  I find XTP data to be on the hot side for cast across 9/357/10mm for the powders I've tried.

Good night those are hot 800x loads!  I couldn't get that hot with 173 grain cast bullets.  Started getting imprinted / flattened / cratered primers at 9.4 grains.

Hey all,

I have had the joy of playing with my friend's 10mm RIA and have now officially been bitten by the 10mm bug.  I have had some issues with feeding in the RIA, and am taking a 2nd look at Glock (which I never even considered before).  I think if I get a gen3sf or a gen4 the grip will be ok.  My only concern is felt recoil.

How does the recoil compare between the G20 and other 10mm guns, especially a 40oz 1911?  I find the RIA pleasant to shoot for even nuclear loads.  Will the G20 be at least as pleasant to shoot for full power as nuclear in the RIA?
