General Discussion / Re: FBI Chooses the 9mm!
October 24 2014 10:54:47 AM MDT
First the 10mm was to much so they switched to 40S&W. Now that has proved to be to much. On to the 9mm. A couple of years hence and the 9mm will be to much. We are now looking for high cap semi autos in 22RF short.

Tell me what result you want and I'll design a study to prove that result. This seems to be the common denominator in government and pay to play studies.

Gear/Equipment / Re: Leather, Hybrid or Kydex
September 19 2014 03:51:46 PM MDT
I tried 3 different hybrids and each one was like strapping on a brick. Threw one into the trash and gave the other two away. All the holsters I own now are real leather. Alessi Bodyguard, Sparks Summer Special II, Overland gun Leather,Bullard Bodyguard, and Sparks Nexus I'm waiting on. Leather will conform to my body and is comfortable next to my skin. Leather will not crack and break like thin plastic will. Leather is quiet and doesn't squeak like plastic. Since I don't swim in my holsters I don't have a problem with drawing from it. Its basically a personal choice and only you can decide which is right for you. Yes, custom leather goods cost more than plastic but to me they are worth it.

The only 10mm I buy is Win Silvertips. I've been reloading for over 23 years now. I load to near Norma spec and will continue to do so. Already gone thru the first 1000 10mm I loaded and am working on the second batch. Since I shoot weekly year around theres no way I could buy ammo. Besides all my long range completion rifles are hand loads. I guess each person has to decide which way they want to go.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Glock 20 gen 4
July 06 2014 03:16:42 PM MDT
Given the amount of problems the gen 4 ones appear to have, here and on other forums I'd have to say get a gen 3 if at all possible. My gen 3 has never given me problems (except sloppy factory chamber, replaced w/ Storm Lake barrel) in the last 3 years.

My g20 IWB is the Overland Gun Leather Axe. Works great even though the 20 is one large handgun to conceal.

Gear/Equipment / Re: 1911 mag comparisons

My RIA 1911's didn't work CMC Shooting Star mags. I stick with the factory original Metalforms and have no failures of any kind in either 10mm or 45acp.

General Discussion / Re: Picked up my firearms

Intercooler,
The heavy security door seems like a excellent idea if the wall/floor will carry the load without sagging. We broke 2 of our basement stairs (2x12's) getting my safe into the basement. I guess its down there to stay now. Hope rest of move goes successfully.

I have to agree with Raggedyman. There seems to be a point of very rapidly diminishing returns that is reached with some of Underwoods loadings. Unless the projectile is specifically designed for those velocities you can run into integrity problems that aren't seen at 100 fps slower velocities. If the bullet wasn't designed to use at those speeds, what have you gained?

Every hand loader has their own reason for light vs heavy bullets. I've never found anything a light bullet can do that a heavy can't do also. I use the 180 and 200gr in all my 10mm's and they have always done what I want them to. They recoil the same as the lighter ones do for me. To me the 180 gr is the best compromise I've found. I do use 175gr Win Silver tips as my carry ammo. The 200gr just seem a little to much for that job but if you are in a area where something might make you their lunch obviously 200gr FMJ/FP would be comforting to have or a 375 HH.

I've got 2 of the RIA Tac FS plus the gen3 g20. The RIA's were good to go right out of box although I did immediately replace the recoil spring, mainspring, and install a flat bottom firing pin stop. Both have at least 800+ rounds thru them. The g20 immediately got a Storm Lake barrel and better recoil spring guide rod. I hate glock smiles on my brass. I had a new Witness match but it pig bellied Win Silver Tips and EAA would not do anything for me. They appear to have the worst customer service in the firearm industry. The Colt Delta Elite will not handle full pressure loads. It has very poor chamber support. The S&W are the tanks of the 10mm world and worth the money. If you can find a Glock gen 3 SF it would be a good first 10mm, otherwise the RIA 1911 10mm's are great if you like the 1911 platform. Farther up the $$ scale Dan Wesson, STI, Kimber, and the semi customs are all nice. Good luck in your search.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Glock 20 Gen 4
April 03 2014 04:25:54 PM MDT
PandaBear,
Please be very carefull of lubing the inside of mags. Any lube getting on the case prior to firing can cause pressure to spike because the case wont fully grab the chamber walls. I use powered graphite on mine and then use air hose to blow out any excess. Hope you get your problems figured out.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: 40 to10 MM mod

I'm running 18.5# recoil, 24# mainspring, and Wilson FPS. All is well. Ejection still low earth orbit. RIA says theirs are shipping with 20# recoil and 22# main. If you plan on a steady diet of medium hot to hot hot you may want to consider my type of set up to save on wear and tear on your springer. 1911's in 10mm are great fun.

If you have a need for Norma spec full house loads by all means use them. If you use your 10's for EDC as I do, I don't need them. I prefer not to beat up my firearms when there is no need to do so. My 2 RIA 10mm are shot at least once a week for 50 rounds each. I don't want to get one loading out of my brass; I want it last a while. I keep all my 180gr loads down around 1230-1250fps.
