Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Accurate #9
June 13 2015 01:14:32 PM MDT
I took the depriming mandrel out of the resizing die and got them resized just fine.  I think my mistake was not paying attention to the instructions which said to turn the die in till it touches the shell holder, then turn one full turn more... 1 ½ turns for the Classic Press.  I have the Classic Press and only gave the die one turn.  Did 1 ½ turns today, and they resized and took the bullets just fine.  Learning steps.

The grip that comes installed on the G20 Gen4 is 0.2 inches shorter than the Gen3 SF.  That info came from emailing Glock and sold me on the Gen4 vs the Gen3 SF.  Plus you have the new double recoil spring in the Gen4 that is supposed to help with recoil, tho I can't say for sure as my Gen4 is the only 10mm I've ever shot.  I do believe the small grip on the G20 Gen4 is smaller than the G21.  I looked at a G21 a few years ago and passed on it cause it felt too big in my hands.

Some people have problems with the hotter loads with the G20 Gen4, but I have not had any problems at all, and I've shot a lot of different loads from warm .40 loads up to the Underwood 220 grain HCL stuff, and that stuff has some recoil to it.  No problems at all.  My gun is all stock and I may consider an aftermarket barrel if I ever start reloading 10mm, but as long as I'm shooting factory ammo, I'm not concerned.

WingSpar, If you have any questions be sure to ask I'll be will to help you.  It's what I do!  ;D
BTW, I load 308Win (I use RCBS FL Small Base dies), 30'06 , 30-30 many of the pistol calibers as well.
Helping my nephew with his .458 SOCOM project which is rolling right along!  ::)

Thanks.  I do have a question.  I somehow got a few cases that were not resized enough and would not hold the bullet, so I had to dump the powder and set them aside.  They all have the primer in them.  Would it be safe to remove the decapping mandrel from the neck sizing die and then resize them with the primers in place?

The Lyman Manual lists both AA#7 and AA#9 for 10mm, but not always for the same weight bullet.  Wonder why that is?

General rule of thumb...Slower powders like heavier bullets.  You will find this to be pretty true across the board.

Thank you.  I am as new to reloading as anyone can be.  Total of 30 rounds of .308 loaded with a Lee Loader (Whack-a-mole) and the first 20 rounds on my new Lee single stage press just today.  I chose IMR 4895 from discussions of powder for .308 in forums and confirming with my Lyman Manual.  I'm not going to vary from the manual or experiment.  There is so much to learn, but with todays availability of powder, one may not always get what they want.  Unique to be precise for handgun.  Powder availability is the only reason I have not started hand loading for handguns, but now that I have a press, all I would need is some dies, bullets and primers and I could get started with the single stage press for handguns.  Slow, but a good learning tool as was the Lee Loader.

I've just started reloading, but a year ago I picked up a couple of pounds of AA#7 in anticipation of buying a progressive press and reloading .357 for a start, but never bought the press as I didn't think 2 lbs was enough to spend $500 + on a press and I put reloading on the back burner till I recently started reloading .308.  I just used some of my AA#7 to break in my powder measure cause I didn't want to unecessarilary cut the tube powder of the IRM 4895 I am using and it flowed nicely.  The Lyman Manual lists both AA#7 and AA#9 for 10mm, but not always for the same weight bullet.  Wonder why that is?  I just got a single stage press, but depending on how things go and my learning curve, I may still buy that progressive press for loading for handguns. .357 and 10mm, probably in that order.

How does the AA#9 meter and does anyone use AA#7 for 10mm?

I recently picked up a Chrono and have used it once.  Freedom Munitions 180 grain ammo is one I tried out my new Chrono with.  Not impressed.

First 5 rounds.  950, 958, 973, 944, 960, Average 957, Extreme Spread 29 Standard Deviation 11 Energy 365

Second 5 rounds.  955, 958, 953, 954, 943, Average 952, Extreme Spread 15 Standard Deviation 5 Energy 362

Out of the box, the slide feels stiffer with the Gen 4 dual RSA when compared to my Gen 3 stock RSA. The grip size without the backstraps installed feels exactly like my Gen 3 SF grip. The polygonal pylons are a nice addition, and will improve the grip comparatively I think.

Part of my research in choosing between the G20 SF and the G20 Gen4 was an email to Glock.  I found out that the grip of the G20 Gen4 is 0.20 inches shorter than the G20 SF.  Probably not enough for most to even tell the difference, but it is why there is no Gen4 SF.

I haven't had any problems with my G20 Gen4.  I've shot lots of different stuff from weak Freedom Munitions stuff thru Underwood 180 grain, 200 grain, and the hot 220 grain HCL.  The first time I shot the gun I put almost 100 rounds from 5 different boxes of ammo thru the gun.  The slide locked open with one Buffalo Bore 200 grain round still left in the mag.  That's the only malfunction.  I have 400 rounds thru it and the stock RSA works fine.

I got this for a woods gun, so I have not even put any of the lighter faster HP's thru it.  My carry ammo is either the Underwood 180 Grain TMJ or the Underwood 220 grain HCL.

To illustrate long term storage of the common water bottles seen everywhere these days, below is a photo of a couple of bottles that have been in a kitchen cupboard for several years.  Why they are there is beyond me.  Just something forgotten about.  There were 3 others that I just opened, sniffed, and poured down the drain.  The caps on all 3 were cracked.  There was no mold, and the water smelled fine, but I wasn't going to drink it.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Freedom Munitions
November 02 2014 05:39:55 PM MST
I bought 500 rounds of the Freedom Munitions and have shot about 100 of them so far.  It's good range ammo.  I'll buy more.  I've shot thousands of rounds of Freedom Munitions in 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .45 ACP and .223 with zero problems.  I do feel FM loads their ammo on the light side, specially in .357 Magnum and 10mm, but it's decently priced range ammo.

The Remington UMC is warmer than Freedom Munitions and is good stuff.  No experience with LAX yet.

I wonder why Freedom doesn't switch to Power Pistol and get closer to the rating?

Cost?

I wonder why so many manufactures overrate their ammo?  Don't they realize that forums like this, or anyone with a chrono can see thru that?

I've received 500 rounds of this stuff, and gone thru a box of it already.  It's fine for the range, and probably the cheapest 10mm ammo out there.  I can't afford to shoot Underwood all the time at the range.

Keep in mind, Remington is currently overloaded due to the issues regarding the R1 and the complete recall. Not defending Remington, just trying to be fair in case you were not aware of how extreme Remington's situation is.

Not my problem.  It's Remington's problem.  I don't care if they are overloaded due to a recall.  That's their problem, not mine.  I paid too much for my gun that they've had for over 7 months for the replacement of one part that they are not making.  Stupid ridiculous.  Anyway, enough of that.  I foam at the mouth every time I think about it.  Now back to the Underwood 220gr Hard Cast Pull-Down.

I have to say Remington CS is non existent.  The issue is with the carrier.  Remington is not making parts.  The manual states a minimum length for .38 Special which is 1.400.  The .38 Special I have is 1.445.  No mention of OAL limits for .357 rounds.  The issue started at 3 weeks and 450 rounds with .357 Magnum loads.  I very much regret sending the gun back to the factory, but since it was new, it seemed like the best thing to do.  Big mistake.  I should have just taken it to the local gunsmith.  I'd have had it back in a few days.  Working.

Real 10mm doesn't really take a Chrony. When it's real, you won't mistake it!  ;D

There is a distinct difference between Freedom Munitions 180 grain and Underwood 180 grain, but having a Chrony would be fun, even if I don't reload, and 10mm wouldn't be the only thing I played with.
