Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: 10mm with VV N110 ?
January 15 2020 05:01:17 AM MST
I use N105 in 38 Super. It actually exceeds .357 Sig speeds(albeit with a 5"bbl). It's also fantastic in .45 acp hunting loads, data at Vit is right on as for velocity, I tested 185,200,230gr bullets and was at or extremely close to Vits published velocities. Their loadings w 105  mimic or approach .45Super(I have seen some way overloaded data for .45super that I wouldn't ever use even in a purpose built 45Super) anyway their velocity is achieved at standard.45acp pressure. Quite interesting.
105 from some reports (I will have to check out the GlockTalk thread) didn't seem to be as warm as you could do with the standard 10mm powders. One that may work extremely well in 10mm is 3N38.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Why #$%^&&**# 800X ?

That's more in the realm of where it seemed should be. That was a great powder, I was sad to see it go. Still have 4lb but I relegate it to heavy shotgun and 28ga loadings, its even appropriate for certain steel loadings.
Interestingly I have some Alcan 8 I came into. It should work well in 10mm. It's burn rate is between BD & AA9 but it should compress better than those two if needed. Shadow and I discussed this one some years back but I still haven't gotten around to trying it in the 10mm(still trying to procure 3# more from a source that has it before I start using it). The Alcan line was another great line of powder that was DC after SW had it a few years in the later 1970s until around 1983.
Another great one, SR4756 although a tad too fast for 10mm it does work fabulously for a subsonic 215 SWC(Travis Frick) in 10mm(5gr). It's a very very accurate load and perceived recoil is about that of a light 38 load from a 686.
Don't know what Hod was thinking when they DC the lines they did.

What kind of velocity are you getting with W571 and a 200gr bullet? My old Win manuals don't show it to be a top performer for velocity but it actually should be as it's slightly slower than BD.

Great writeup! When I was in the firearms industry (large midwest outfitter) we were told by the people at Winchester that this bullet is an SXT but with a heavier jacket and a coated(proprietary)bullet to hold up to higher velocity of magnum cartridges for big game hunting. They said nothing about being bonded but that the reverse taper jacket would keep bullet together.
Looking at Rdubs recovered bullets from the water jugs it looks like impact velocity exceeded the parameters of the bullets design(although far from bullet failure). It seems the petals folded too far over for the cutting points to be effective as designed(the point of the SXT/Talons). I wonder how far he was shooting?
While I am sure it's very effective ammunition, I am wondering if it's anymore effective than a wfnhc bullet? If not its a quite expensive, but pretty.
New designs aren't always better, but they do generate income for the mfg.
Old Elmer Keith still is the guru on handgun hunting and his Kieth 250gr design in .44 is still probably one of the best bullets for big game, now only surpassed by wfn designs of hard cast lead.

Rifles / Re: 308 Winchester for AR - 10

I never got to the the range this weekend either. Got hit with a tornado yesterday at 11:30am. No power until 9:00 tonight. I ended up cutting wood 1:30 Saturday until 5pm today. Son and I were in the garage when it happened, sounded like an F18 was tied to the roof with the afterburner on. Son [emoji102] at me with eyes just like these and says, "Oh no!! The MF tree just fell on my car!". Trees down in front and back of the house. About a 15 block area trees twisting off, and falling on houses etc. 60% of the city lost power with some estimates saying it will take up to 7 days to rebuild grid infrastructure and get power to everybody. They have crews coming in from the south and midwest US, utility crews working 24hrs/day.
Needless to say, I am really tired tonight.

I average 1263 in a 5" 1911. I use 12.5gr of AA9 with the 200gr wfngc hc bullet. I haven't chronographed the load from my 6" Tangfolio Hunter. I figured it should at least do 1280fps.
That is absolute max load in the 1911, this particular 1911 has an extremely tight match chamber. Your Glock is most likely much more generous than my 1911 in the chamber, thus your higher load density.

Good luck with the load Shadow! Dry out quickly!! Keep us updated in your progress
Im thinking about maybe switching from my M1a and going to an AR10 platform. The main issue is scope hight above bore. On my M1a the centerline of the scope is about 4"+ over the centerline of the bore, even with the highest cheekpiece I still have to rest my lower jaw on the riser to see through the scope. Two problems confronting me:
1. My M1A is sub MOA, tested to 300m anyway, and that's with all 3 common bullet weights (handloads worked up to this weapon) 150, 165/168, & 175VLD.
2. Most AR10 have proprietary parts incorporated somewhere, and aren't nearly as interchangeable as the AR15.
Im liking RRA(I'have one and had one both stellar in AR15) but RRA is quite proprietary right down to their very expensive magazines. But, scope hight would be awesome.
Hobbies, hobbies, hobbies, what to do???

Shot placement would be my first concern. When the guy started running and the officer started running backwards that's when shot placement becomes more difficult. I just don't think the LE wanted to shoot maybe related to all the Monday Morning Quarterbacking and possible legal and civil charges. That being said I'd want a .45ACP or a 10MM with good ammo that was documented to penetrate less than 18" in ballistic gentian to help shooting anyone on the other side and reduce the chance of a lawsuit over shooting an innocent bystander.
Agree with shot placement, and not trying to hurt bystanders. This brings up an incident that happened 25 mi south of Green Bay in a city called Appleton, our Detectives had to go down and determine what happened. I will second guess what they found. They found no wrongdoing I disagree. Once the hostage was taken they should have set up a perimeter and waited for SWAT/HRT to deal with the situation, instead)from what I can see in the video, they opened up on the hostage and perp. From what I have heard she's in a home as she received a TBI and is not in a state where she can really do anything.
Had that(hostage) been a member of my family I would be raising total hell in the state. This thing went wrong from the second they suspected a weapon and didn't draw theirs when perp backed up on them, hell perp had time to chamber a round. People all around WI are making excuses for the police from well there's very little crime there(its 20 miles from my house????we have crime here!!) to oh they just weren't trained enough. To be clear I am pro police (my brother is one in southern WI) but to see what happened here there is no excuse. WARNING EXTREMELY GRAPHIC. Updated for better understanding of post

I have to agree with Rojo, yes not many situations are like this. Drugs can however overcome many of the psychological factors of a perp in a shooting, it's even worse when they don't care if they die. To answer the OP and keep it to 10mm, it's just my opinion that the UW load with the GD 165 gr probably gives the best balance of energy, and penetration without over penetrating, and yes more rounds are better so maybe one of the Glock. The only way to actually guarantee a perp goes down immediately and stays down is a hit to the fatal T.

Reloading 10mm ammo / New to 10mm and reloading
May 02 2019 06:22:16 PM MDT
I invested in a Dillon Super Swage and I must say its wonderful. You can set it up with a rubber band ejector (YouTube ) and you can go quite quickly. I also have the RCBS motorized case prep station that I used to cut the crimp off with; needless to say it only gets used for neck chamfering since I got the super swage. For 5.56 I set it up for LC brass and it works great for all other stuff I've encountered (Hornady, Fed, etc). Definitely worth the investment if you're going to be loading alot in the future.

This little gem that YouTube suggested I watch explains alot, why a 44mag is no more effective than a 10mm. They say it's elasticity threshold in human tissue, neither exceed it. Really eye opening.

I too like Greybeard would be interested in those stats. Too bad there weren't statistics on military shootings in the Moro cases during the Philippine-American war. After all, this conflict brought in the bigger is better thought and led to the adoption of the 1911. It would also have been helpful if the military kept statistics of the effectiveness of the 1911 in all of the campaigns in which it was used, that would confirm or dispel the idea that bigger is better.

I load DTs WFNGC bullet(Beartooth?) with a nice change of Accurate 9. The ideal length for both my Kimber and Tangfolio Hunter is at 1.244. No issues feeding (they do if I seat them longer than 1.245) and accuracy is great! They average 1263fps in the 5" Kimber. The WFN hardcast bullets are great!! Thinking of trying the Cutting Edge 190, but would want to push it around 1300fps. Not sure if that's possible with the length and increased bearing surface. They would look pretty in nickel Starline brass.

Gunsmithing / Recoil spring
April 09 2019 03:25:34 PM MDT
I am with SQ on this one as well as Mr Travis. I have read his articles on Rangehot and they make alot of sense. Just my opinion; from dissecting his articles while examining my weapon, logic dictates to me anyway, that you can possibly do more damage to your frame with to much forward slide speed. As his articles explain, there's a whole lot of frame steel against a whole lot of recoil lug to absorb and dissipate energy to the rear, with the forward speed you really have nothing except the linkpin and slide release pin to stop the forward movement of the slide. With this second scenario at best you shear a link pin, at worst you crack your frame at the slide stop pin hole. They may have a video link, but while talking to Hunter Lee, he at one time sent a link to a video where they fired a 1911 (think a whole mag) without the recoil spring; end result was no discernible damages to any of the parts.
After studying this I chose to change the #23 in my Kimber Custom Target 2 Stainless, like SQ I went to a more moderate spring of 20lb and that's what I am using now without issues, I may even back down to the 18.5 lb that Kimber ships in the 1911 10mms from them. Probably the best way to mitigate rear slide speed is with the flat bottom firing pin stop. Im not too keen myself on going up on mainspring tension as that can increase trigger pull and the Kimbers have wonderful 70series triggers in them. While they do have a firing pin block its of the original Swartz type, actuated by the grip safety.
I hope whatever you choose it will work out well for you and to your expectations.
