As a 55th Birthday present to myself I bought a RIA Compact 1911 in late 2008.  I also purchased 1k rounds of Remington 230 grain FMJ and 500 rounds of Remington HP's that IIRC were also 230 grain.  Over the next 6 months I shot a full case of the FMJ and about 1/2 the JHP plus about 500 rounds of mixed Military Ball and reloads (200 grain SWC/ H&G68 mould).  The gun ran flawless with the exception of not fully returning to battery after about 300 round of the factory FMJ, I could nudge the rear of the slide slightly and it would go into battery.  I call RIA and talked with one of their smiths in Nevada, he sent me a Wolff extra power recoil spring at No Charge.  The pistol ran flawlessly for the remaining rounds.  After about 1,250 rounds down the pipe I decided that it just didn't scratch the itch, so I sold it along with the remaining 750 rounds of ammo.  It wasn't my first foray into 1911's and the 45 ACP, I had carried a 1911 as a duty weapon for about 4 years during my LEO career.  I had hoped I could rekindle the relationship with 1911's but it just wasn't meant to be.  The RIA had nothing to do with decision to sell, it was just the whole 1911 thing.  I would purchase another RIA without reservation if I ever decide to venture into the 1911 game again.

Regarding mine, it was actually more volcanic grit than ice.  I was just afraid if would hinder slide speed & also expedite wear .....  ;D

In December of 2013, I spent 10 days ATV Elk Hunting near Alcova, Wyoming.  The temps were in the teens during the day & below 0* at night for the 1st 3 days.  I carried a Gen 2 Glock 20 in a Chesty Puller Rig from Simply Rugged.  The 4th day on the temp never got over -10*, with the nights down to -28* or so.  We rode about 1/3 of the 4th day and got back in the truck, driving and glassing.  By the 3rd day, the Gen 2 Glock 20 was so gritty and frozen that I changed my carry out to a 3" GP100 loaded heavy, carried in the same manner.

I've gotten out of the 10mm/40 S&W game and have some left over plated bullets for sale.   I have 1,000 x-treme 10/40-165 RNFP HPCB  that retail for $32.95 per 500 count, 1 box has been opened but none are missing.  Also have a partial box of Berry's 40 (.401) 180gr FP, that contains about 200 bullets, retails for $36.95.  All will fit in a MFRB,  $55.00 shipped.

Thanx for looking ...... ;D

I would carry my usual EDC, a S&W Model 38 No-Dash. Along with my standard reload ,a speed strip of the same Remington 158 Grain LSWCHP that are in the Model 38.  Might throw a long gun in the Jeep, might not.   I carry every day with the expectation that I may have to use deadly force to defend myself or SWMBO.

Edited to add -  SWMBO always has a Glock 26 loaded with Winchester 127 Grain +p+ Ranger JHP's along with a spare magazine of the same with her.

OK, the 10mm project has failed ( even with my grown son ) so I have 300 New Starline brass & about 400 mostly once-fired for sale.  The fired brass is a mix of FC, Starline &  Underwood.   How about $75.00 shipped ...... ?    I also have 2 Pre-ban 15 round magazines for a Glock 20, asking $50.00 shipped for those.   Thanx

General Discussion / Re: The Snubby's Dirty Little Secret

A great read, thanx for posting the link Raggedyman.   I carry the +p 158 Grain LSWCHP almost always in my 2" Model 10-5, 4" Model 64-3 & 2" Colt LW Agent.  My 2" Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard is usually stoked with Standard Pressure 148 Grain WC's from BB, due to it's age & light weight.  I say usually because during hunting seasons ( Basically August until December ) the state of CA, AKA Confusion .....  :P requires Lead Free when in the back country.  During those months all my .38's are loaded with the Barnes 110 Grain +p DPX since I live in the back country.   Again, thanx for the great & informative article, your writing style rocks ....  :D

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Gen 2 Glock 20 .....

I hear ya Shadow,  I have horrendess Tinnitus ..... :(  When I was initially injured they thought maybe I had suffered a mild stroke.  After multiple MRI's & Nerve Conduction Test they decided that my wrists were both just plain worn out.   I was 45 at the time and asked the Sawbones what would have caused that, he replied " Too much Driv'n, Fight'n, Shoot'n & Writ'n .... ).   I was afraid to ask him about Hearing Loss, Stress & Ulcers ...... ;D

After 3 surgeries in 11 months they concluded that I was unrepairable, so 2 years & 22 days after the injury they forced me to retire.  I loved my job, I never worked Detectives or Dope because I was a Hairy Legged Ole' Beat Cop at heart.   Took me about 5 years to get over the fact that I got Kicked Out'a the Car .......  :o

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Gen 2 Glock 20 .....

Shadow,

I now always wear hearing protection, I spent to many years around dirt bikes, gunfire & sirens ..... ;D    I really am beginning to think it has more to do with the way the Gen 2 fits my hand than the 10mm, the .357 Sig in a Gen 3 is painless.  After my hand injury and subsequent surgeries I was unable to comfortably shoot my issued Gen 2 23 that I had no problems with over about 5-6k rounds over the previous 6 years. That is what forced my 3 year early retirement.

I made a short lived run at privately owned .40 S&W in 2012,the G22 & G27's that I had were painless in the Gen 3's .  But, SWMBO didn't like the snappiness in her G27 and wanted to return to her Gen 2 19 ( which I can't shoot very well now, even though it was my privately owned duty gun for 4 years prior to the SO transitioning to the 40 S&W and I was able to shoot it really well ).   To appease her the .40 S&W's went away and were replaced with a pair of Gen 3 Glock 26's, she kept the Gen 2 G19 as her nightstand Roscoe ...... :-\

10mm semi-auto handguns / Gen 2 Glock 20 .....
September 14 2014 09:54:44 PM MDT
So, after some more testing with different loads in my Gen 2 Glock 20 with no relief to the hand pains, I've defected to the .357 Sig in a OD Gen 3 Glock 32 ......  :P

But ...... I will still frequent the forum because my son took custody of the G20.   He shot a CCW Pistol Course with it on the 6th, shooting about 100 rounds of AE 180 FMJ.  He had shot about 250 round of AE and Corbon prior to the course.  He has fell head over heels for the 10mm.

Yesterday, he came to the cabin and learned to cast & reload for his new toy.   Cast some LEE 175 TC's and loaded 50 with 13.0 Grains of AA#9, also tried 50 180 Grain Plated Berry FP's with 12.0 Grains of 2400.   He is happy with the function & accuracy of both loads.  He thinks the 2400 load is louder, I couldn't tell ....... ;D

For sale / Re: For Sale - Gen 2 Glock 20

Shadow,

I haven't thought about a brace, I have a lot of scare tissue in my palm.  After a mag or 3 it gets pounded pretty severely and remains sore for several days.  I bought a Hogue Slip on for Large Pistols and will try that before I start reshaping and stippling.  I'm away from the cabin doing Grandpa things until Tuesday night, so I will try the Hogue on Wednesday.  Thanks for the suggestion on a brace, I will look into that.

For sale / Re: For Sale - Gen 2 Glock 20
July 25 2014 05:53:17 PM MDT
I've decided to give my Gen 2 Glock 20 another shot.  I spoke in detail about the pain problem with my original Hand Surgeon & also with my Primary Care Doc.   At the suggestion of both, I am going to try a different grip shape and texturing to try and alleviate the pain in my palm and also concentrate on less than Nuclear Loads for a while ......  ;D

I really hated the idea of moving away from the 10mm because the Gen 2 shoots so well for me, but was quite painful to both my palm and wrist after 3 or 4 magazines.  I've had 3 surgeries to my right wrist and palm ( between May 1999 & June 2000 ) as a result of an On-Duty injury .....  :-[   Also, since I've shot all the Underwood 180 Grain TMJ that was giving me FTF problems  the Glock has ran flawlessly.

I'll keep in touch as the test goes forward.
