Gear/Equipment / Re: 1911 mag comparisons

I've been using Tripp Cobra Mags in both my .45ACP and 10mm 1911s and they've worked superbly! Recommend them to anyone.

If it's a 1911 it might need some fitting. I've had the issue with some 1911s where the slide locks back with rounds still in the magazine. As it was explained to me by a gunsmith, the bullet nudges the slide stop when feeding and can cause it to happen. Different bullets & loads can have a big impact on this. Had one in .45 that would be fine with COAL of 1.200 but this would sometimes happen on loads with a 1.260 COAL. Two ways to address it. Either filing off very small amounts off the slide stop where the bullet it hitting it or to dimple the slide stop where the plunger hits it. I believe someone makes a slide stop where there's almost like a miniscule ledge to accomplish the same as dimpling it. Picked up this tool (http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/handgun-tools/action-frame-tools/safety-slide-stop-tools/1911-auto-detent-spotting-drill-prod7665.aspx) from Brownell's and have used it on a few 1911s. Does take some patience as it appears to be designed to do it slowly. Too much with either method and your slide won't lock back so take it slow and make a few trips to the range slowly testing it out.

Gear/Equipment / Re: tripp research magazines?

I've used both the 9 and 10rd 10mm magazines from Tripp. Normally just the 9mm as I shoot IDPA and such, but do have some 10rd ones I use at the range. No problems with them, solid. Tried some Wilson 9rd magazines but decided on the Tripps as I had some problems with the Wilsons.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: xtreme plated bullets

Just started trying out these guys. First batch was some 200gr .45 FPs. Have been very pleased. Unfortunately missed the 10% discount the other week to order some more. I have liked them on facebook and am following their posts which seem to be where they post they weekly specials. Next up will be 180gr bullets out of the 10mm. I tend to push them to high velocities (10.7gr Blue Dot for 1265fps out of Glock Gen3 G20SF, probably about 1275 or so out of 5" 1911). Does anyone have any experience on if I should order the HPCB or will the regular do fine?

nice... Blue Dot does flash ( and loud ) well too.
My favorite loads for loud and flashy are either 165gr and 9.8gr of Power Pistol (1295fps) or 180gr and 10.7 of Blue Dot (1267 fps). Chronoed with a Glock G20SF and factory length Lone Wolf barrel although I normally shoot a 10mm Kimber Eclipse full size 1911. The 165gr load is much better for getting some attention. This video of me is with the 180gr load http://youtu.be/u8xH7Cl-Qus

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: New Gun?? D.W vs. Kimber

Can't speak on the Dan Wesson (although one day I hope to find and be able to afford one of their 10mm CBOBs with a ramped barrel), but have been very happy with my 10mm Kimber Eclipse.

This will work until I find some WC 10mm mags in stock  :)
I'd recommend giving Tripp Research's Cobra Mags a try. I've had great results with their magazines in my .45 and 10mm Kimbers.

Installed Kimber MSH/magwell, 20# recoil spring, and EGW flat-bottom firing pin stop.  Someone told me it would be a Series 70 of course it is 80, so I had the wrong one.  An hour with a dremel and file and I made the firing pin stop into an 80.  :D  Significant difference in racking, we'll see how it shoots.  I was shooting a box sitting on a crushed rock driveway; the violence in impact of the bullets vs the same bullets out of my 40SW was impressive.
None of Kimber's 10mms are series 70. The only models without the Schwartz safety currently in production are the Warrior models from what I understand. I'd also suggest a one piece magwell. I've used the Kimber but the screw seems to either the screw works itself loose or breaks (in tight with red loctite) on me when I shoot a lot of full power loads. Expecting a A&S today in the mail but may switch to a Wilson Combat at some point as it's more like Kimber's.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Win Silvertip

They're still showing it on the website and checked with my LGS and they've got it on order. But it has become impossible to find anywhere near me. For now I've been using Hornady 180gr XTPs.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Blue Dot , or IMR 800 X ?

I'd go with Blue Dot unless you want to individually measure each load. I run a Hornady LnL Progressive and 800X metered very poorly. No such issues with Blue Dot which has become my usual powder for 10mm (10.7gr w/180gr FMJ).

I have thought long and hard about this. I would like to see what the "competition" is all about. I love to get out and shoot and make new buddies. It sounds like HELLA FUN. Obviously i have seen different forms of it on television and read oodles of information about it. But what about in the Southern Michigan(Ann Arbor, Jackson, Lansing) area? Are there events or clubs anyone can share info on? Anyone have a good lead?

Thanks
Nate

I shoot IDPA and have shot a few matches in Michigan. Some good clubs. Check out idpa.com for clubs in MI and I'm sure you'll find some that are relatively close to you. Worst case would be coming down to Wauseon, OH for a match.
