10mm revolvers / Ruger Super Redhawk Accuracy Testing
November 08 2018 01:32:49 AM MST
We got a Super Redhawk in 10mm and it quickly became a favorite. It was even more rewarding to shoot after getting a bullet mold that worked well in the 10mm dropping a bullet that weighed 203 with gas check without lube. For good or bad, this bullet likes some velocity to work best and we settled on a load that had a SD of 9 FPS. We do most revolver load testing at 25 yards and the SRH would consistently put 6 rounds into 1-1.25" groups or 4-5 MOA but that was with iron sights. We put a cheap scope on it and started increasing the distance to see if that degree of accuracy would hold up for 6-shot groups and it did. At 50 yards it was around 2.125", at 100 yards it was 4" and then we tried it at 200 yards where it shot a great 5-shot group just over 5" BUT unfortunately I shot 6 shots and the remaining shot just nipped the paper making the group size 7.625" and still close to that 4 MOA standard at 3.8 MOA. The next step is to get a little better rest and maybe different optics to get more of the human error out to see what the revolver-ammo combination is doing.

It is all in what you are looking for. I prefer a single stack magazine with a 10 or 45. Even if both were offered and at the same price, I would still have bought the 8 round over a 12 or so shot double stack magazine. I have two high capacity 9mms but I would not want a pistol with a grip any larger.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Sig P220 SAO Quick Review
June 27 2015 04:26:45 PM MDT
I have been waiting for the P220 w/adjustable sights to come out and I finally got one. First off, the pistol feels and looks like quality. While the trigger felt light, checking it with weights surprised me--it picked up 5 lbs 5X in a row without the sear releasing. It picked up 5.25 3 times and the hammer dropped 2 times and at 5.5 lbs, the hammer dropped every time. The pistol empty with a magazine weighs 44.3 oz. The sights are just outstanding in both construction and function. I fired a couple of shots and made some adjustments to get it solidly on the paper @ 25 yards. I then fired 10 shots for a group with some hand cast 208 grain SWC that I had loaded and sitting around. It did not disappoint...

Here is a picture of the case support on the barrel. I have not seen anything better with a factory (or even aftermarket barrel) for that matter. Sig did their homework.

Sig also has some deal going on with some of their guns where if you purchase from 6/15 until I think the end of July, you get up to $200 free gear from their catalog. Sent the coupon in today.  ;D

I have Ruger center-fires in 32 HR mag, 327 mag, 9mm-357, 10mm-38/40, 44 mag, and 45 Colt. While I like them all, the 10mm is a favorite with it, the 9m and 327 getting the most use. The other thing it is strong. I was carefully bringing up the velocity with some handloads until it began to show signs of pressure. When it went above 900 ft/lbs with still no signs of pressure, I quit there as the accuracy was falling off. My standard 200 cast lead load @ around 1150 is no problem. Any sane load will work well in a 10mm Blackhawk. YMMV.

10mm revolvers / Ruger 10mm 38-40 Revolver

I recently got what was advertised as a NIB Ruger. It may have been shot but it couldn't have been much. The bluing was perfect and I could not see rotation marks on the cylinders. It shot good but not great in my opinion, averaging just over 3" @ 25 yards off a sandbag. Checking the cylinders I saw they were undersized on the throats but no local 'smith had a reamer for a 10mm.  I called Ruger and explained that I am not the original owner but clearly this was a manufacturing issue. Ruger looked it over but just returned it without repair stating they had no parts. Ruger did give me a new manual, some decals, etc. I called Dave Manson and bought a reamer and they even let me select the pilot size without any extra charge. These cylinders were hands down the tightest ones I ever reamed. I took my time and it really paid off. I can shoot standing 25 yard groups now that are smaller than it would do off a sandbag before (see standing target below). I am very happy with it and it is clearly a keeper.

saleen322, glad you were able to find us and welcome to the forum!  If you were looking at support issues i suppose you have seen some issues over the years?  There have been several high performance loads that have ballooned out in the Delta factory chambers.

I really haven't heard about that much for 10s until I was reading a post on another forum. It seemed that mostly I heard about the 40s having support issues. Then, just as you called it, a Delta let loose on a Buffalo Bore round. It took out the magazine but the OP said the gun was found to be okay.  The interesting thing was when he showed his barrel with a round in it, it was showing much more brass than my barrel does. Up until then, I did not realize the chambers were cut so different. I guess Colt did that to aid feeding??  Anyway I learned something and I am VERY impressed with your tear downs of factory ammo. That is great!  Thanks for all of your members work. I plan on doing a lot of reading.

General Discussion / Introduction-New Guy from Western PA

I actually found the site from a link on case support. I joined after I saw the link for an article that included the IAI (AMT) Javelina. That is my 10mm that I got in the 90s when they closed out on them. It was around $200 new give or take during the sell off. Over the years I added a beaver tail safety and a commander hammer and probably a thing or two I forgot but it still shoots well and great caliber. Look forward to sharing information.
