Title: .45 Super?
Post by: blaster on August 07 2020 07:50:20 AM MDT
some might call it blasphemy but I have been reading about the .45 Super lately. (trying to figure out a good use for my .45 acp pistols since I got spoiled by the 10mm.)  the question I have is, since the super uses thicker brass for the higher pressure, could I cut down .30/06 or .308 Win. brass to make .45 Super? does anyone here shoot and or reload the .45 Super?

I have a M&P set up for one,  its a hammer.

Starline has brass way easier then messing with 08/06 brass.

If your bored and have a couple days, some interesting stuff here.

What did you do to set it up? I have a Para Ord with a fully supported chamber; with a stiffer spring I shoot +p wo problem. I wondered what 45 Super required.

24# wolff spring and guide rod, extra power mag springs, and a Carver comp.

Buddy set one of his kimbers up, 28# wolff spring, extra power mag spring and a flat firing pin stop.

We both settled on the 215gr Missouri coated bullet over 11gr 800x @ 1300ish fps.

215 @ 1300... wow! That should make that grip safety bite a little bit. :))

If you are going to put on a comp and a 24# spring you might as well go 460 Rowland instead.

Never looked to see if Rowland offered a M&P conversion.  I've taken a 255gr past 1200, comp or no comp it was a handful.

Both guns function flawless with regular ball loads too.

I did not see the M&P on your post, Rowland does XD's and Glocks but no M&P's.

I still have a Springfield V16 which is a ported 6" 1911 with a 24# spring that have shot a lot of 45 Super through.

V16, I'm envious!!!

I'd of went with a Glock, but they fit me like a bad pair of boots. Was a toss up between the XDM and M&P, but LGS had a threaded 2.0 M&P collecting dust for cheap cheap, so took it home. Dan Preston did a RMR cut on it this past spring and put a Holosun 407c on her. So far so good.

That Springer V16 is something else! I stumbled on an R1 long slide in 10mm and I'm still waiting for a front and rear sight, when I get them it's gonna be a long range day :-)

I converted my ole AMT Hardballer to fire .45 super. I had a Ed Brown match barrel with a fully supported chamber in it already. I added a full length guide rod, a 28# recoil spring, extra power hammer and firing pin springs and a flat bottom firing pin stop.
I loaded up some test loads and the ones with the same weight bullets & powder as my 10mm loads chronographed about the same. but with the super I was able to increase the powder charges for significantly higher velocities and no over pressure signs. when I get some heavier .451 bullets, I think I will see a lot more difference over the 10mm. a real big plus with the super is that all the brass fell within 10 ft not 10 miles like the 10mm! :P
