Title: What did you do today reloading related?
Post by: Alabusa on June 30 2020 07:40:37 PM MDT
I sized, trimmed and primed 100 pieces of new Starline 10mm brass today. Did this in anticipation of the arrival of 400 180 grain rnfp hard cast bullets tomorrow.

What did you do?

Yeah empty shelves are so nice but never seem to last long. Mine are full but organized. I do have too many boxes of 10 of this 23 of that but I have been trying to shoot it up as I can. Nicer weather has helped with that in general and it's a lot of fun to boot. Craig

I have seen posts like this go for YEARS AND WITH DOZENS OF PAGES!! ;D ;D ;)

Good post!!

Last night I installed gas checks in about 200 30 cal bullets.

I prepped 50 222 Rem cases for loading.

I tumbled the balance of 300 6.5 Grendel brass

Lastly pulled out some 300 BO brass for those GC'd bullets.

I am kicking around the idea of getting a 22-250, probably with an Ackley chamber and a 1:87 or 1:8 twist.  I got about 500 pieces of new brass when I bought out a reloader a year or two back, so clearly I need a gun so I can unload any ammo I make.

Along those lines, I ordered some 90 grain 224 pills.  They came Monday, so I loaded up a couple of dummy cartridges with a 90 grain SMK and a 90 grain Fusion soft point.  The goal was to measure COAL with those long 22's loaded just so the base of the bullet was aligned with the base of the neck, and then calculate the needed free bore to chamber them, and ensure they would fit in an AR10 magazine.

COAL came out to 2.715" for the fusion.  It loaded longer than the matchking due to it's very short boat tail.  The 95 grain Matchking would probably load out to a full 2.800 to fit the magazine, but require less freebore due to the long ogive.

Now I gotta decide how much jump I am willing to live with in lighter bullets compared to seating into the case for these long, heavy ones.

The goal is to have something that can still shoot the 62 grain bullets well, but also get out to a mile above transonic with the 90 grain stuff.  I see videos of guys pushing the 22 Valkyrie to a mile, and I should have a 300-400 fps speed advantage over that round for the same bullet.  That translates to 32 minutes less drop at a mile.  and 2 minutes less wind drift in a 6 mph wind.

My time was pretty uneventful compared to most. Stopped into my favorite small town reloading shop to shoot the breeze with the owner, only to leave with 1K primers, 500 starline brass, and a jug of BE-86, now I can get to work on the 165gr  Federal Hydra-Shok's I didn't remember I had 😀

Hey Blaster great minds think alike. I deprimed 250 9mm cases and put them in the tumbler. They are now done and in the oven drying. I don't have any small pistol primers and the local place is out of them. Will move on and maybe the net will have the primers but I haven't done to well lately on the net as they are also sold out.  Craig

Cleaned a bunch of nonreloading/nongun related detritus from one of the benches.

About a 1000 556 brass going through the trim process.

Setting up to do a run of 200gr Nosler JHPs I got from SPS a few years ago.

Started putting things back in the loading / hobby room today...I hate to say this but I have a problem... :-[
Anyway sorting combining and organizing years worth of all sorts of collected brass, bullets that are in my current stock pile (no shortages), still have ammo to sort through and ammo cans to label as they fill up! ;D
Thinks are progressing nicely, but what a job to organize all that stuff! :o

One day I'll get to sit at the loading bench and continue where I left off... ;D

loaded up the .308 Win. brass I prepped the other day. boy, my estimate was way off! instead of 200+ pieces, it was only 153 pieces of brass! :o  I guess its been a while since I've reloaded full sized rifle ammo. loading all those pistol & 300 Black Out rounds has skewed my estimating ability to look at a pile of brass and guess the numbers. :-[  anyway, I charged them all with 42 gr. of WC - 846 and topped 129 with Hornandy 150 gr. SP and the rest with some 147 FMJ bullets. now I need to take the M1-A out and empty a bunch of them so I can start the process all over again. ;D

Boy Wade those rounds should take care of those pesky rhino in your backyard!! Ha. Back to reality for me I loaded up some of the blue bullets I just got in and shot them in three guns. All shot good but I was off slightly but not too bad. This is interesting, I loaded 6.5 Power Pistol with those mag primers I had to buy. I feel a very good load for these blue bullets should be 6.3 power Pistol. It also happens to be the same load I have shot for years with JHP bullets. The 6.5 with mag were just a little hot for me but they sure worked. I'll post when I shoot the 6.3 rounds.  Craig
Oh the three guns were the Taurus slim,G2, and the Walther p-38.

BTW I did check the barrels and NO!! leading of any kind. The data folks on the internet said to load light so the bullet would stay together and my load as stout as it was for me was lighter than most but I like light. BTW this was a 115g round head bullet. It really shot good in the Slim and I have had trouble with that gun before. Craig

Ya know it's almost as good when you have no issues as to function in a new round compared to shooting great. I  like both but will settle for good function in a new to me round.  Craig

Shot the 6.3 blue bullets this morning and they were fine. No failures of any kind but I did have some trouble with 125g JHP as I loaded them too deep so they hung up on loading the first round then all OK. The blue bullets are a welcome surprise to me as they are so cheap I will have to buy like 1000 or so just because!! Need to find primers first.  Craig

Got a couple of things I did today. First a friend came up with some IMR 4756 he didn't remember buying but thinks he did but couldn't remember what caliber he got it for etc. I looked it up on the net and it is interesting. You can use it for shotgun down to small pistol loadings. It's close to Unique in that it' is slow. I have never used it but it is all over the net. Second, I am trying a new technique for cleaning the shop up. It's like do a primer, put something away. You get the idea but it works for me. Craig

A month ago I purchased a DPMS Oracle AR10 308 Win. Made some updates to it. Today I went to the range with various 308 loads I had made for my bolt action.  I shot 150 grain Federal Fusion, 165gr Nosler Partition and Ballistic Tip, 150 gr Hornady Interlock and 180gr Nosler Partition. The Fusion will be my go to hunting load for this rifle. The 165gr Nosler Partitons were a good load. The funny thing is the Nosler BT with the same charge both worked fine in the bolt action but in the AR10 it was quite a different story. The BT's were not very good. So know I will make up a bunch of the Federal Fusion loads using 43.5gr of Varget. After supper tonight I plan on popping the primers out of 308 and 300BO casings I have and will wet tumble them while I am at work tomorrow. Then put them on the dehydrator at lunch. Then start loading the Fusion rounds. I have 178 bullets. I need to chrono them for use with the Sig Sauer BDX Scope/Rangefinder. But there shouldn't be much of an adjustment. Scope was zeroed with factory Fusion rounds. My loads were only 1.25" high at 100.

I also tested some 41 Mag Speer Deep Curl and Nosler JHP Hunting both 210 grain. Fired from a Taurus Raging Bull with a AT3 Tactical red dot. Both loaded with AA#9. Both are accurate loads but the Deep Curl was slightly better. But I could hit 6" steel plate @ 100 yards with both. And 6/6 on 8"x8" zeroing target at 100 yards.

Well loading 9mm blue bullets with mag pistol primers that I ran out of at round 90 so finished up  with small rifle primers. I am sick of not being able to buy what I want when I need it. My local store is telling me nothing is in production as the factories are shut down due to the virus. It's a good thing we don't need any ammo at this time because it wouldn't be available.  Craig

I bought a swage die from BT Sniper for one step forming bullets.  I did add another step and use a star crimp die from them also.  Bullet is similar to the XTP.  Was using a Lee Classic for the press but now use a Walnut Hill.

He has some very nice things and his new nitride coating is very good.  I got started using his dies for .458 Socom several years ago.  This .40 die is a replacement for a CH die that wore out and started making .403 bullets.

The last couple days, I have loaded 400 rounds of 9mm for my best friend and another 300 for my competition gun. I am about burned out on 9mm and am in need of dome 10mm therapy.

I did find a good source for 9mm bullets. One of the very few places that has bullets in stock and ready to ship. Sadly, they do not stock .401 bullets....yet. i have talked to the owner of the company and he said he would take a look at the market and see if investing in that caliber would be worthwhile. Fingers crossed!!

You should like them as I did when reloaded the same a year or so ago. AA9 is the most powerful powder I use with 10mm or it seems that way. I still like the 180 HST as I got some as pulldowns and are all loaded and tested. Craig

Well I finished a bunch of 45 some for a friend and some for me with Starline brass that I had for years but I though  never loaded except when I put these new loads in storage I found a few hundred already loaded!! Kind of sums me up. Well I moved on to 300 blackout for another friend that I hate to load but it went well as I was going to do some over a few days and finished all in one sitting. Am ready for the next gun show this coming weekend.  Craig

Thanks for the welcome guys. :D

I'm set on powder and primers. Good advice on plated bullets, break through the coating and you get problems.

It's just good old fashion swage jacketed bullets.  RCBS got it's start making .224 bullets from spent 22LR cases (Rock Chuck Bullet Swage).

About 10-12 years back a guy named Brian Thurner (BTSniper) over at cast boolits latched onto the idea of using spent 9mm cases as a jacket.  I don't think he came up with the idea, he just really grabbed on to ride the bull as it were.

The problems he solved were related to using a thick brass case of a 9mm (or 40 S&W for 44 mag bullets) instead of purchased copper or using thin 22lr/magnum cases.  He also made a bunch of headway in making the process fast and efficient.

Here is a thirty something page thread at cast boolits about his products:  http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?117577-BTSniper-Custom-Tools-and-Dies

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?398657-400-price-and-options  Direct link to the .40 bullet.  The rims on the 9mm case also swage to .40.   Waiting on the heat to go away to cast some lead for copper jackets that I have on hand.

I get quite a bit of use from my use of home swadged 40 cal bullets made from 9mm casings!!!  Hahaha. "Only way I shoot 9MM" is frequently my line.  :o ;D  (Im not a 9MM fanboy)

Last night I cat up about 300 from a new NOE mold. Then powder coated and sized them to .3595.

Went to a gun show and there were no primers and very little loaded  rounds. I got lucky with some 300 blackout brass and some 7.62x39 same. I left as there were still people waiting in line to get in.  Prices were high in general.  I also got lucky with a friend doing a garage sale and with other friends he had a bunch of 303 Enfield rounds like 2000 or so. I didn't really need them but bought some odd bags and boxes cheap as I can always use the brass. There was a lot of people walking around with high end guns for sale at high end prices. I guess I was there about 1/2 hour and then I hit the road home.  Craig

My buddy is always wanting what he calls "garden loads". He used to reload, Gave me rest if his stuff ten years ago with premise I load for him. Anyhow, I made the PB loads for him. Loaded 20 with splash of aa2 for 975 fps. He said he has a couple woodchucks he wants to

It all started last weekend. We had a LARGE garage sale that is advertised as the route 40 garage sale that has gotten hugh over the years to the point you can't see them all but I had friends that were selling guns and ammo so I was there checking it out. I load for these people so the main guy started me off with a 20 round box of newer 303 British for free. He had just given me a bunch a few weeks ago and this was left over from that pile. He was also selling for other friends that also shot 303.They had cases of 730 rounds they were selling for 200. I thought at that price it would never move but one guy put down 800 for four cases. They got another case from one friends house. I did buy some odd quantity's of 303 like 100 rounds for 15.00 or so. Then I was at breakfast and another friend said a local gun shop had just got in a load of strange rounds from an estate sale so I went to that yesterday and there were rounds I had never heard of there but also some 303 so I made an offer that the guy jumped on. I am set for life. I keep saying to myself enough is enough until I went to the website that had once fired 303 brass and they were out so maybe I am not so craze after all!!!   Craig

Sized, Flaired and primed 100 45 Colts.

Sized Flaired and primed 100 350 Legends.

Sized and flaired 250 10mms.

Loaded up a doz 357 Mags for my neighbor. His garden loads with my soft cast 358429 HP. Keeps our "other neighbor" quiet cause the report is far less then factory ammo yet more accurate and works better then the target 38's he WAS using! :)

I normally do most of my reloading during the winter months. Decided to get started early.

Over the past few of days I have loaded 100 rounds of 308 Win 150 grain Federal Fusion.

200 Rounds of 10mm 180 gr Speer TMJ w/ 10.6gr Blue Dot. I got a 400 count box of these from Mills Fleet Farm for $35. I was able to get out and shoot these on Monday. This is a good load for my Glock 29 and XDM. I didn't G20 with me but I am guessing these will work just fine. I will load another 100 of this today.

Wet tumbling 200 30-06 brass right now. About 10 I will change the water and run a half hour rinse cycle. Put them in the dehydrator and they will be ready to load.

Im running out of 9mm so I will most likely start on that today since its going to rain the entire day. Im hoping I have enough Power Pistol. I was at both retailers and they are out.

I have no more 45ACP brass to load... well except the big jar of small primer!

OK went to a gun show looking for small primers, found them and hold on to your hats!! I only paid 80.00 per 1000. I got um anyway!! The bigger better news is I bought a Lyman 6 hole turret press to put with my 7 hole Redding. I wanted a single stage for Lee deprimer but this is better in that I could do other rounds while not disturbing the  settings for the dies on the Redding. It will work for me and the guy that had it before me bolted it to a massive flat plate so you can c clamp it to the bench which I have done. The only downside is the spent primers go everywhere so I will have to dream up a waste system for them. Nice day so far!!  Craig

Hey Wade nice pics and nice deer slaughter ground. He He. Anyway I just got done with the two turrets setting up with 10/40 on the Redding and 9mm on the Lyman. Was doing some 40 so It works with plenty of room for all dies with holes left over. It will be the same with the Lyman as with 6 holes I only need 5 on a bad day with 9mm. I can put the decapper anywhere and am still thinking on that.  Craig

OK just finished off 50 9mm cases with the last 25 using the new Russian small pistol primers I got at the last gun show. They seem to go in just fine and I will compare them to the small rifle primers I had to use to empty the primer tube. The official name of the primers is WPA but the fine print on the box says made in Russia. Kind of fun stuff. I will post after I compare. I wish someone would explain to me why Russian primers are available but USA primers are not. Well don't bother to explain really.  Craig

Here is a good example of what a little brain damage can do.  I was finishing the small rifle primer comparison to Russian small pistol primers when I suddenly thought to myself I really need regular small pistol primers to compare to the Russian primers. Well what I loaded will tell me enough I feel. Then to top it off I bet I have 20,000 9mm loaded with small primers just sitting there I could of used to compare. I really need to test a bunch of stuff but it is now bow season so my usual target ranges are connected to land friends use to bow hunt. I don't want to scare the deer off. There is an indoor place but I don't like to spend the money to shoot there.  Craig

On the surface this may not sound reloading related:

We took possession of our mountain cabin/retreat.  The plot is 40 acres and is bounded on three sides by state-owned land.  There is a 2000 sq ft cabin, fully insulated, wired and plumbed.  We spent the weekend up there stocking up provisions and making plans to get the cabin usable year round.  Currently the only water is from a tank on the mountain and the power is from a gasoline generator.  There is a propane tank but heat is wood stove.  In the next four weeks we hope to have a well drilled, get the water line from the well->tank->house buried below the frost line and get 21Kw of solar panels installed along with an 18KwH battery bank (LiFePO) and a propane generator, along with some propane wall heaters.  It will make for some busy weekends.

Reloading related?  Once we get these items done, I will have my location where I can load up and walk outside to test the load.  Already have the 100 yard range defined, as well as a 25 yard pistol range.  With a little judicious trimming of some branches on the aspens, I should be able to see the 100 yard range berm from the deck.  Range from deck to berm will be 135 yards.

Got out to the range to shoot 40 cal and 9mm with the two types of primers. I could tell no difference between the rifle and Russian primers. The Russian shot fine and I will use them up in short order I feel. The 40 call still has problems and I may have to order a new barrel to fix the ramp issue as they are one. The gun shoots great when it feeds.  One last thing to try is FMJ reloads.  Craig

I started reloading just misc. stuff off the bench as I have cleaned down to the bench surface and there is primers, brass, and bullets dropped during previous reloading sessions. You wouldn't think there would be that much but I have loaded 50+ 9mm, 15+ 45 and 20 or so 40 cal and I am not done yet. Lots of one of this and two of that I may just pitch.  Craig :-\

The brass came out of the tumbler "cloudy" So I did them again but like 1/2"or 50 rounds as I was trying for 100. 50 are for me so no rush on those. The second cleaning was the ticket as they came out like new even the primer pockets like new. I will also need a bunch of 9mm but they are done and some 380 which are also done. Easy Christmas and I get a good laugh out of the stocking stuffers.  Craig

Went to a local gun show and primers were 125.00 per 1000 I didn't buy!!! Did find a long lost holster maker that had an interesting IWB holster that totally fit into your pants and you pushed or pulled the whole holster out far enough to grab the gun. It's an interesting concept as you can't see the gun print or any part until you need it. There are some videos on the net that show it in action and it does work with some practice. I also bought a ankle holster for my North American 22. Prices on guns were very high but I at leased found some holsters I liked.  Craig

Love that 180gr XTP / 10.4gr BD load. As long as you can get past the flash in lowlight, it's one of the most accurate loads I have found

I mounted a LEE Bench Plate for my APP Press I like for my PC bullet sizing.

Not at all a LEE fan boy, but It was recommended by a friend and I must say.... WOW! I believe I am pulling out the router & making a jig to recess this in my bench. Its gonna be perfect.

Lee has some really good ideas.  Sometimes I appreciate their pursuit of lowest cost, and sometimes I wish they spent a bit more on the quality of the final product.  The bench plate system is good idea and well implemented.

One of the simplest things LEE made was the Load-All shot shell press, I got my 12 ga way back in 1979, and it makes great ammo.  Recently I have been using it for buckshot and slug loads.
While LEE also makes regular bench presses, I have seen many that were broken for various reasons.  Some people abusing them or not understanding the limitations and pressing their luck and broken press...  The handles, press body and other things broken.

I moved a number of years ago and because of my demon sloth attitude of I'll "get around to it" I left a lot of stuff unpacked. This week I've been unboxing a number of things, and reorganizing my bench.

I found a primer stash which that alone was worth the effort. I sold my 12ga. MEC hydraulic press to make room, bought some new doodads (scored a third Star sizer) and finished up casting and powder coating a few thousand rounds of .40's for my 40 cal and 10's, 356's for my .357 Sig and .38 super,  and also some .45's for the .45 Colt and ACP.

I'm now firmly in the "I'll never reload 9mm's again" and gave away all my 9mm brass too!

Now that I can once again see my bench, I got going on using up and shooting some of the hoard of primers I found without juggling stuff on the bench top :-)

I fired up the mini lathe and turned an old rusted 9mm Luger sizing die in to a push-through sizer for 10mm Auto cases.  I chucked it up and drilled through the die with a cobalt 10mm drill, then used a boring bar straight in to open the bore to exactly 10.80mm (0.425 in).  Then I ran the bar in to a depth of 21mm at 10.9mm diameter, and used the cross slide set at 2 degrees to taper the 10.9 to the 10.8.  Finally, I flipped the die around and bored from the top to 10.9mm and a depth that half the case can sit in.  Of course, I cut a chamfer on the input side of the die with a 1/2 inch bit to guide the cases in easily.

It works great.  No lube needed and surface finish of the sized cases looks really good!

I could have gotten the same results with a Lee FCD gutted, but this way I salvaged a rusty die and saved buying one, and got to play tool-and-die maker in my garage for a couple of hours.  I call that a Win.
