Title: Ohio lockdown
Post by: gadabout on March 22 2020 06:46:39 PM MDT
Not sure about the official title of this but in Ohio as of tomorrow night you must be in your house and not leave unless it's for food or drugs. Nothings open anyway so we have been on this anyway for a few days. I will start reloading tomorrow and will be going non stop except for breaks. I think I will end up with an extra 10,000 reloads if all goes well. Will update as I go.   Craig :o :o ;D ;D

Dallas County is now in what they're calling a Shelter in Place quarantine. Pretty much what Ohio is going thru. Only travel is for food, meds, or to take care of a family member. The counties with large cities are expected to announce in the AM. Houston and Austin, probably Waco and Ft Worth. The medium size cities like San Antonio are expected to be shutdown by Wednesday. Gov'r Abbott of Texas is considering not making the entire State under this quarantine as many of the counties have not had one single case of Corona virus. Those counties are primarily in West Texas where there's more coyotes than people. And far South Texas where daily temps have already exceeded 90F. The virus is known to be temperature sensitive. While I have no concerns over it, I believe the next 90F day, which is supposed to be this Thursday, I'll park the truck in the sun with the windows rolled up. Looks like I'll be working at the bench for a while getting brass ready.

Sounds like MN will lock things down this week as well. The company I work for is considered a critical business, so I will continue to go in : (

I have been work from home now for three weeks.  Not really new for me as I typically worked remote 1-2 days a week pre-COVID19.  All of Utah is being strongly encouraged to remain home if possible.  School is now on distance learning for the second week.  And Salt Lake County has a ban on public gatherings of more than 10 people.  This caused some jokes at our home as there are 12 of us here.

I was on our deck yesterday morning about 9:30 after cooking some bacon for breakfast.  It struck me how quiet it was.  No car or city noise at all.  It was like waking up early at a scout camp in the mountains, including the fresh air.

Well I got 100 9mm problematic rounds done. I had 30 of this and 50 of that and the rest regular non processed to make an even 100. Some were not resized or expanded and some were. Just kind of confusing. some with primers most without. I just rand them through with no real problems except I had to think about it which caused the most confusion. It only took an hour so I will solder on.  :'(  Craig

Well I guess it's really called "Shelter in Place"I really like "Party in Place better" I am up to 350 round count but I don't need anymore but will try to keep going. It's hard when you think of a round you haven't loaded in a while but you go to check and you have a few thousand more than you will ever shoot!!! Oh BTW, since I am washing my hands a lot because of reloading doesn't this mean I are reloading by governors order? :-\ ::) ???Craig

Over the weekend I loaded up all my empty 9mm brass.  It was about 600 rounds.

Tonight I plan to get the 38 super loaded as it requires very little adjustment to the machine following 9mm.  Then I am going to switch the 1050 over to process 223 brass.  I have a couple thousand of those to load up with 55 grain, as well as some 77 grain.

This weekend I will probably cut over to large primer and load up a couple hundred 10mm, maybe a hundred 40SW, and then on to 30-06, 308, 358 and finally 458 socom.  I also have a couple hundred 44 mag and 357 mag to fit in at some point.

If you look at what's considered important and what you're allowed to do, really not much of a 'lockdown'.

https://www.wcpo.com/news/government/state-government/ohio-state-government-news/ohios-shelter-in-place-order-what-businesses-are-considered-essential

https://www.cisa.gov/sites/default/files/publications/CISA-Guidance-on-Essential-Critical-Infrastructure-Workers-1-20-508c.pdf

Barbers and beauty salons are the only things I didn't see listed.
In the Ohio link, ammunition and firearms retailers are considered important.

Ha! Went to a friends place later yesterday and you all will love this. So he told his wife he would like some 40 cal for his birthday or something. She went to the local place and bought 100 gold dot 165g bullets for reloading which he doesn't do. So he gave them to me. I of course said I would reload them and give them back to him which surprised him,  but made my day and hopefully save his marriage, He He!!  :-* :-* :D

Did something a little different for me yesterday. Had a lot of 9mm brass so I set up the Lee decaper, sizing die. flair die and went at it like 400 rounds worth. Very boring but done and ready for powder and bullet and taper crimp. Craig

Well the governor just extended our Party in place to May 1st. So what to reload next??I have tons of everything loaded but did come across a larger quantity 180g JHP Montana Gold I guess I can do a few hundred of those.  Craig

I guess you know your reloading when you have to order 10 100 count plastic bullet boxes!!!! I have a ton now but need more of course. I don't like having rounds just laying around. What's really bad is I just needed 9mm and 10mm. Guess you know what I have been loading the most A. Boy another month of this and I will be in great shape for a few years like 20 or 30.  Craig

About two weeks ago I finished processing all my 223/556 brass in preparation for a big loading push.  About 1800 pieces of brass.  I switched the press over from size/trim/swage mode to start loading, and then got distracted.

Yesterday I went looking in a corner of my office for the shredder.  And found a half-full five gallon bucket of 223/556 brass in need of processing.  Today I switched the press back to size/trim/swage.

On the one hand I am bummed that I have another  3-4 hours of processing brass ahead of me.  On the other, I will have a good backstock of 223 hear real soon.

Hello fellow Ohioan, this my situation too! I've got plenty to go, just cannot figure out what I want to load next either. I've been loading 223 for the AR, trying different bullets and powders. Found out my gun loves the sierra 77gr match king with IMR 8208 XBR.

A few days have passed and I received my order of plastic boxes from MTM. Got some strange for me colors this time but I really like what I got. Went out this morning to look over what I have to pack up and get organized but couldn't find a few rounds I knew I had. Found um and it's just that I have way to many loaded up so I have to put some here and some there.I just don't remember where I put them and it's a small room!!! Oh well. Did find some odds and ends to load up so it's a good thing I got boxes now!!!  Craig

That means 80% of Americans are still going to work.

Google did it for me, found several sources most being TV or paper media sources  but if you look at the actual list of "essential" businesses it doesnt surprise me a bit-- especially when people "stretch" the boundaries of the definitions

My job is considered essential, repairing rail tankers, so still working like a dog, while sitting at home bored I had 200 pieces of new starline 5.56x45mm brass staring at me. So I topped 100 of them with 62gr ss109 bullets and 24.5gr H335. It's been my go to load with these bullets. One inch @ 100 yards isn't horrendous for these so it works for plinking.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200414/f8288b7dd694f8da87898584e36ae4f7.jpg)

OK got a bunch of 9mm done to make room then ran some 10mm JHP and some hollow base steel jacketed flat point just for laughs and to get them out of the way. I still have a couple of strange 9mm to move and I allways have 1000 9mm fmj if I run out of everything else. We are "Partying in Place" now!!!  Craig

While I was making room for reloads I found 124g HST bullets I must have gotten a large quantity like 500 or 1000 a while ago. Finished up some 10mm and started on the 124g HST. Did like 50 but still need to like 100 more or so but ran out of prepped brass. I'll do like 500 9mm brass to start off tomorrow and then finish the HST. BTW they are a nice bullet.   Craig

Whew!! got the 9mm decaped, resized and flared and they are in the wet tumbler so will be ready in an hour or so. Not sure but around 400+. I will  finish off the HST then be looking for the next project.  I am doing fairly well with cleaning up left over bullets but when I think I getting ahead I find another Tupperware container full of bullets. I do think this is left over from the Obummer administration. Oh well at leased I am not short this time!!!!! Craig

It's pretty tough to beat the HST's. Got in on some 124gr+P 9mm in 50 rd boxes for 28.00 each, not a bad deal with my small discount, normally 30.99 for 50, Lol, they allowed me to pick up 500 😀

Kenk I don't remember exactly but I think I am loading these for about 13 or 14 dollars per 100. All HST's were pull-downs! Even better when you forget you have them and it's then like loading them for free. I also found but I knew they were there, 147g HST that I use in a S&W 910s. It's the only weight that shoots accurately in that gun. I don't shoot it much so I don't need a lot of rounds for it. Craig

Well, I am done processing 223 brass....Again.   :P

And I have a good backstock of powder thanks to a deliver by UPS from American Reloading.  Trying out their MP475 powder.  They only publish two loads for it, but I only wanna load it in those two cartridges, so it works out.

This week I will work up some loads for 223 55 grain using their powder as well as some 308/168 grain.  Saturday morning I will get out to the desert and try them out, and hopefully return with "the load" to run for all this brass.  And with a little luck in two weeks I will be out of MP475 and have about 6500 rounds loaded.

Pulled a fast one at the local gun shop as they are working off the internet setting up appointments to get your stuff you have paid for on there site. I said I couldn't make the site work so they let me in to get primers.I have found more critical duty 9mm bullets and some 165g HST I can load but I needed a break so mowed the grass. BTW I am running low on plastic boxes as I have been loading so much. Can do a few hundred without any problem. Also got the loading dies for the 7.62x39mm and if I can come up with bullets I will load 10 or so for testing.  Craig
Title: Re: Ohio lockdown
Post by: gadabout on April 21 2020 06:43:05 AM MDT
Well I just answered my own question. I had bought a bunch of 9mm at one time and they were HST's, Critical duty. and one other I just found a bunch of that I couldn't remember the name of. Just went to check my stock and found some loaded V-crown and that's what I just found a lot of in the reloading room. Whew memory is just shot!  At leased I got a few hundred of those to load up. I think I now have about 10,000 9mm in stock. The unsung hero of reloading is small plastic containers. I would be dead without them. ???   Craig

Well just weighted these bullets and it appears they are really 165g 10mm or 40 cal bullets which I can use moreso than the 9mm. Craig
Title: Re: Ohio lockdown
Post by: gadabout on April 22 2020 11:30:12 AM MDT
Is moreso really a word if it's not it should be!! Well I am looking for something to load that's not the same as what I have been loading for the last two months!!! Ah I got a bunch of 10mm and 45 but loaded too much 10mm lately and I don't shoot 45 anymore so it is just for friends.  Craig

I will still be looking. :o :-[ :-\ :'(

In looking around for various 7.62,308,311 type bullets I came across a box that has like 400 9mm 124g V-Crown JHP bullets I forgot I had. I do have several hundred already loaded up but it's a nice bullet that I can do sometime. I am getting down to it. All small quantities have been loaded up.  Craig

What happen to that strange guy that was reloading all of the bullets he could find and then some??? He is still finding stuff to reload and the local place is now open sort of for some stuff. I am really reloading for my holster making friend that I meet up with at gun shows. I am working on rounds I need for a late June gun show as it's the first one in my aria that is still going to be open. Although they have plenty of time to cancel!! I am hopping a late June date may still happen. Well at leased the bullets don't go bad!! I all so did some 7.62 using reloader #7 but I need to give them to a guy for testing. It's good data so I know they will work just not sure of his gun as it had a dent in the case mouth on ejection. I am trying lighter but he hasn't tested the last rounds I gave him yet. Man I am getting tired of this "party in place" reloading. At leased the local gun place is open such as it is! Gives me something to do in between different loads. I have used up a lot of 303 bullets for 7,62 rounds and need more. Guess that's it for now.  Craig

I was reloading 2 days ago and my primer index can broke. Had to grab some scrap 1/4in and 11 gauge steel from work yesterday and bring it home. Fired up the welder and plasma cutter and was back up and running in an hour or so. It will be 10 days or so to get the the actual part from RCBS [emoji45] so at least I have a backup in case it happens again.

I finished 200 62gr Speer gold dots in 223 with cfe 223 powder and then 200 Xtreme X-Def 124gr 9mm with BE-86. Waiting on my 500 count pack of 69gr Sierra match kings and 200 73gr eld Hornady bullets [emoji51]

I forgot to mention it was 300 aac blackout I did for a friend that I really hate to do as it is just like 7.62 but a bad copy. I am going to make a round out of reloader 7 for the 300 blackout as I now have the powder but no data. I can extrapolate from 308 or some other round close. Funny as Alliant has no 300 blackout data on their website. Oh well another reason why I hate to reload 300 and I don't even have a gun to test with.

So my fun yesterday revolved around some clear gel and target shooting some 223 rounds.

In the 223 fired some 55gr vmax loaded with 25.4gr 8208 and 62gr gold dots loaded with 27.2gr cfe223.

The clear gel was shot with 230gr HST, 230gr gold dot, 200gr gold dot, 124gr X-Def, and 62gr gold dot. This is also the order in which they appear.

The 62gr gold dot was shot at a distance of 15 feet. It penetrated 15 inches.

The 124gr X-Def penetrated 11.75 inches.

The HST and gold dots were all in the 12inch window.

Nice expansion all the way around. Well finishing up a few 125g 9mm HST bullets and finished with the 300 blackout. I am looking for other bullets to reload. Oh I did sell two pontoon boats I had laying around the backyard so I am getting the place cleaned up with a few extra bucks in my pocket. Was cleaning the reloading shop this morning and found a brick of small rifle primers I have been trying to buy all week. I must have gotten them a few weeks ago and just forgot I guess. I have nothing left to reload except a few thousand 9mm fmj that I have thousands already loaded. Boy I did some case cleaning prep yesterday and I left a few in the tumbler for like two hours. They came out beyond clean. That's it.  Craig

Found some 125g JHP like about 400 or so. Did a quick 100 this morning and went to put them away and guess what? Found about 500 already loaded. Ah I guess I need to start shooting more. I don't even know who's bullets they are, maybe Barry's thick plate but not sure. Loaded light anyway. Craig

Found another Tupperware container full of the 125 JHP so I think I have about 800 or so I could load up. Shot some today and the STI was in the black with all rounds and the Kahr was better but needs work. I think I am just shooting better in general but the Kahr is very light and I get a lot of movement.  Will work on that. The STI is a wonderful gun.  Craig

BTW When Handloads.com was still going Shadow or Slick helped me with a problem that a S&W 910s was shooting everything low. Whoever said to try a 147g bullet and it might raise the point of impact which it did!! I am wondering with the Kahr impacting high all the time if I load a 115g bullet if it might help me. Any ideas??  Craig

In answer to my own question this will not work as I was shooting incepters at 65g and they were high on the target. Will try the 115g loaded light as I have them done at this point. also the sites are strange for me on this gun. a white dot between black dots and a white dot under the white front site.Oh well just something to do.   Craig
Title: Re: Ohio lockdown

OK shot the Kahr with the lighter bullets FMJ and they seemed better but really the problem is the shooter. Once I really figured out the site it shot all rounds better. Nice little gun and no recoil to speak of. The white bar dot  sits below the front white dot and that lowers the shots. Case closed.  Craig

Going to a gun show tomorrow to meet up with my holster making friend and will take him some 300 blackout I have loaded for him. Hope to find stuff to buy as I have a lot of cash to spend. With the virus and people out of work the walking around people selling cheap should be interesting. I hope anyway. Will also be looking for misc brass I need but not a real problem except for 300 blackout. I really am in pretty good shape for reloading supplies in general. I would love to come across some 9mm incepter bullets for reloading. Weird stuff like that is what I will be looking for and maybe a cheap gun but can't think of anything I want but that's when something I can't live without turns up.  :P  Craig

Found a elderly gent walking around with a Walther P 38 like a 60's vintage he claimed was never shot. Perfect condition, we talked and he wanted 775 for it I offered 600 but he turned it down. Saw him later and I offered 650 and we settled on 700. Sorry but I will have to shoot this one. BTW got everything you get when you buy the gun box, paperwork,2-mags, cleaning brushes. Needless to say good gun show as I got some needed brass also.  Craig

Shot the new Walther p38 today so there goes the never fired price point but it was worth it. Shot FMJ no problem and JHP no problem but the incepter round were a little bumpy. I am not sure what the load was as I had some left over in a mixed tub. Was shooting just for fun so I will revisit the incepters with known good reloads to see how it does. NICE gun though. Reminds me of the way my Browning high power shoots. Very smooth!!  Craig

It's in Columbus, Ohio. There are really two regular one's now but because of the virus one is not running and the one I went to was the first one there in about 2 months or longer.  Craig

Sorry I forgot the social restrictions part of your post. No mandatory masks, no real distancing maintained but there were signs up to do it but nobody was.  Craig

The Westland mall one ? I went to it a few years ago. I've gotten spoiled by the Berea and Akron shows. C&E does put on some big shows in North Carolina.
I'm up by the lake in Euclid, 1st eastern suburb of Cleveland.
The Lima and Mansfield shows are good. Occasionally I'll go to the Novi Michigan show.

Well what to do what to do. It's like 90 in the shade but the humidity will kill you long before the heat. Ha Ha. I could get used to this but never the cold. ANYWAY was so bored I went to work on an old Schwinn varsity I got for free and it needed tires, tubes etc. Got it all working and thought of the guy with the post of hunting with a bike. I just thought I would climb a tree near where the critters were tie a rope to the bike, haul it up in the tree and wait until the critter of choice came along then just drop the bike on it. Case closed. Craig
