Title: Witness Hunter Concealed Carry??
Post by: Gzig5 on March 01 2020 03:31:06 PM MST
I'd really like to concealed carry my 6" Hunter 10mm.  Holsters are few and far between.  I have a chest holster for hunting but  it doesn't lend itself to concealed.  First, is it possible to carry a 6" barrel?  I carry my 5" Kimber 1911 in a Alien Gear IWB holster and suspenders with good results.  I'm open to some sort of cross draw or shoulder holster too.  I'm 6'2" and about 240 pounds so I have a bit of area to hide a larger frame pistol.  I know there are custom makers, but maybe nobody silly enough to try this? I just really like the thought of 24+ rounds (with extra mag) of 10mm should the crap hit the fan.  Let's not get into discussion about proper carry guns, I have others I can use and I may buy more, but for now there are certain scenarios that this pistol would satisfy better than others.  Would usually be for four hours or less at a time.  I'd like to hear others experiences or opinions.

I'm 5' 9" , about 175lbs and I've often carried a 5" 1911. It's not hard with the right holster and attire. Your Witness Hunter is another thing entirely.

I would suggest contacting Stoner Holsters in Ohio. The make a vertical shoulder holster called the Stormer. It has a removable insert, so it can be used with multiple guns. Their quality and customer service are excellent. They even make a shoulder rig for Desert Eagles, so I'm pretty sure they could hook you up.

Google them and give them a call.

If you look at a belt rig, IWB or OWB, be aware of how the holster situates the gun.  A holster that places the grip between the kidneys and the ribs, as most belt holsters do, is going to present a situation where a draw is very difficult due to the added barrel length.  It is hard to raise your hand high enough to clear the holster mouth.  This often results in pivoting the gun during the draw stroke, which can cause the muzzle to point at your own vitals.

One thing to look for is open nose holsters for a standard witness, or holsters that could be cut off without compromising the integrity of the holster.  This would potentially create more options.  Even getting a shell for your alien gear and cutting off the nose so your hunter would seat in the holster might give you insights into what is going to work for that gun.

These types of challenges are why I started making my own.

In the back country I always carry my 10mm pistols in a Cross Chest rig. That is Grizz Country. A belt rig is useless when a Grizz attacks like a tank. I like the XDM 10mm with a Venom red dot in town. I carry the XDM Mdl 4.5 in a custom leather Hyride holster.

If you go custom, think about an OWB leather High ride style. Then the extra 1" of barrel length won't be as much of an issue.

I'm still playing with the idea. I picked up a basic IWB cross draw for my 1911 and so far so good. But I think it may have be owb for it to work.

Morning Gzig5,
Another one to consider is the Vedder Light Tuck IWB, I sure like mine

I am 6 ft. & 245 lbs. I occasionally CC my Witness full size steel in the same homemade IWB holster that I carry my 5" bbl 1911 in.  its just a simple pouch type holster with a belt clip. I position it at "4 o'clock" just aft of my hip bone. it rides fine most of the time but gets in the way a little while driving. when standing, walking and drawing , no problem.
