Title: Can't believe I'm saying this...
Post by: Overkill338 on February 12 2020 06:19:22 AM MST
But I'm considering the 5.25 XD-M 10mm. I haven't had an XD since they first transferred over from the HS2000. I'm normally a diehard Glock guy, but my only option for a 5" barrel there, is a G41 and a conversion barrel, or a G20 with an extended barrel. I want a 5" because that's what the 10mm was designed around. The Ruger 1911 10mm, the Delta Elite, the Dan Wessons, the prices just get crazy stupid, and you still only have 9 rounds.

So that leaves me with the XD-M or the Glock 40. Those of you with the XD, how do you like it? Anything I should know?

I've had my 4.5" bbl XDM for a little over a year now. its a great shooter and I like it. I was going to get the 5" bbl model but didn't like the sights and found out there were no after market options available. (may be different now) the only problem I have had with it is occasional light primer strikes. I am probably the cause of that though, not being that familiar with striker fired pistols, I got lube in the striker channel. :-[ I cleaned it out but still had a few FTF last range session. I have since cleaned it better. next range session will tell.
I almost bought a Glock but don't like the way they feel in my hand. the XDM feels a lot better. I just wish they would make a 5" aftermarket barrel that I could install in it.

Understand wants, but do you really think there's that much diff between a 4.6 and 5" barrel at the receiving end...
esp tho designed with a 5" barrel, there's enough loads to compensate

Glock 40. In my opinion is the best 10mm out there when you look at all factors including barrel length / ballistics, weight, shootability, and most importantly capacity.

the Sig 220 in 10mm might be a better shooter, but weight and capacity are huge considerations.

Just my humble .02.

Yeah, any of the 1911 style pistols, capacity is pitiful. If I don't get the 5.25, I'll just get a G20.

I see Springfield offers the 4.5 model with a 5.3" threaded barrel.

I have the 4.5" XDm 10. The recoil and muzzle flip are much greater than any of my 10mm 1911s. Particularly with Underwood level reloads. The grip angle and grip in general is more comfortable than the G20. The grip is unfortunately too smooth in the wrong places compared to the G20. $20 to Talon Grips solves that problem.

The recoil issue seems to be waaaay to much slide speed. I upped the recoil spring to 22# and it made a marginal difference. A stronger spring may make more difference, unfortunately there is none available at this time. It roughs up brass less with the 22# spring, as well.

Mine also arrived with a little over 7lb trigger pull. Not ideal to take advantage of a supposedly match barrel. It's much better with the Powder River Ultimate Match Trigger I installed, and plenty accurate. Apparently, Powder River triggers are factory installed on some XDm guns, just not mine.

Looking at the internal mechanics, I think Springfield missed the boat on trigger/grip safety design as well. Pulling the trigger lifts the sear blocker out of the way, and adds weight to the trigger pull. A Schwarz type safety, like some 1911s, would have been a perfect solution for a gun like this.

Just my opinion, I'm a little disappointed with mine. Good luck with you next purchase.

Thank you for the very honest and thorough review!

I bought a RIA 1911 the hi-cap model and really like it. Fully supported ramped bull barrel and 15+1.

The only down side is the weight..

.. I also have a G20 and XDM 4.5... I like em all. :)

I've been considering getting a long slide (5") Grand Power P40 to match my 4" GP. Love the gun, shoots great.

There's plenty of them around  I got a Big Rock and never looked back 6" barrel with a rail and 16+1! Now looking for it's baby brother which has a 5" barrel and 16+1 as well!

Why not get a G20 and a 5" aftermarket barrel?

I'd do that before buying ANY Springfield XD pistol.

I have the 4.5 Springfield. I love it but I've been a XD and XDM fan from the start.
I don't like Glocks grip angle and I don't want to buy a new handgun that I have to buy an aftermarket barrel for to shoot cast.
It is under spring as mentioned before but the Wolff kit was cheap enough.
The trigger pull on mine is typical XDM. I don't have a pull gauge But I wish it was better and someday I may get the powder river trigger kit.

My G20 is a brick in my hand.
The grip angle is awkward and the overall thickness is huge and glocks are truly just unattractive unless you're a fan of machine parts.....yes that's what a lot of people say about Glocks in general but it's really apparent with the G20 and 21.
I'm wanting a P80 frame that fits the 20 slide. The improved grip angle and texturing makes these frames better than mother Glock ever has been imho. Honestly I don't mind the heavier trigger pull of the plastic fantastic either.
All that being said since the G20 platform is lighter than steel, versatile, and durable it is my backcountry gun when I need capacity over wallop.
In bear country an Alphawolf 6 inch barrel and a Paradise Valley Leather chest rig make the 20 work for me when I leave the 41mag at home.
I generally shoot my steel guns at the range these days and take the plastic ones afield since I have come to understand over the years that when on foot every ounce counts.

I can update my old thread now. The wife bought me the Sig P220 Elite 10mm for my birthday. The weight and capacity issues faded away, for the sheer quality, accuracy, and amazing trigger. I'm going to modify a 10 round P220 .45 mag to use as backup too.

About all I can say is that I've had the long XDm 10 for a while now, but have not shot it much yet...maybe a few hundred rounds so far.  I find it comfortable in the hand and comfortable to shoot, and it has fed the 3 or 4 varieties of loads I've put in it with no trouble--except for some I found I had left seated too long (and too long to feed in anything I own, not just the XDm).  I can't really add much, other than that I find it far easier and faster to take down than my Glocks--which I don't actually find easy to get apart due to my challenges with that dual-side spring loaded release thing.  Now, mind you, I dislike my G20 with a passion, and while I like my G29 far more, am still not a huge fan of the gun.  So, it's probably more useful to you to hear from someone who shares your like of the Glock, than from me, who wouldn't have much heartburn throwing both of mine in the trash...literally.

From an aesthetics perspective, I would prefer the 5.25 have a 1 or 2-round shorter grip, and one that looks and feels more like an M&P. Plus, I felt the need to grind off most of the snow-tire tread on the backstrap of gun.  Deep, sharp grip treads to me aren't comfortable or useful. I work 12 hours a day at a keyboard--my hands don't stand up to aggressive grips well at all and I don't find they actually help me keep a grip on the gun anyway.

I was very excited to discover the XDm was available in 10 and ordered one as soon as I could--never having held or fired any SA product before.  I'm happy I did...but that's just me.  If Smith came out with the M&P in 10 tomorrow, I'd be ordering one by Tuesday.  I like 10.

I like the 4.5 better than the 5.25. It seems to balance better to me. That is why I got the 4.5 OSP version.

I want to see a M&P 10mm, they can call it the MP1006. I want a Sig P320 in 10mm. Gray Guns will be releasing one, but I want Sig to do it too. Part of me would like to shoot a HK USP in 10mm as well!
