Title: 45 acp rifle loads ideas
Post by: gadabout on December 04 2019 02:06:25 PM MST
All my friends seem to be going in the pistol cartridge direction for there AR style rifles. Now so far my 45 acp loads are fine and they love them. I was just wondering if it is safe to push these loads a little as long as it is just for rifle. Anybody got any ideas??  Oh yeah I shoot 9mm pistol in a high point carbine with much success. Craig

Even though it's in an AR rifle, I'm assuming they're blowback guns, I wouldn't go beyond +P loadings. It sounds like these are for friends of yours. They might not be so friendly if something blows up. You're assuming all of the liability.

I've reloaded ammo for friends and family, too. Usually it's just range ammo, but once in awhile it's some real 10mm ammo. That's when I'm extra extra careful and match Underwood specs, verified by my chronograph. I would suggest you do the same. You should be fine.

Yeah I don't even load max very often and all my rounds end up around .5 under max so I guess if I load max it would be alright. I will stay under max a little I guess. Craig

It's debatable in a blowback gun how much extra performance you'll get out of a higher pressure loading. .45acp was never meant to be a high pressure load. You might want to experiment with a little slower powders and see if that offers some advantage in a rifle.

I am using Power Pistol which is a slower pistol powder and it has always worked great. With my 9mm pistol rounds in a rifle it sure seems more powerful with more recoil. My friends are getting the same experience I am getting. I guess I really don't need to do anything and they will be happy. They are all hunters and I am not so don't have any idea what they might need so I just thought I would ask here. Craig

you could look in 45 super loads.... autocomp has some loading ( on Win data site ) for same which come in under 20k pressure...
Tho max load is prob about 950fps.

You may just be better off buying some deluxe ammo like Buff Bore, etc

I have run some autocomp at above max loads for the 230gr head in my Sig 220/45...
they were very snappy and slight pressure signs of flatten primers at 7grs Autocomp.
AT YOUR OWN RISK of course
