I'm looking for a good way to carry my 1911 concealed while hiking. I've got plenty of decent belt holster options, but sometimes they don't work when I'm using a day pack. I'm thinking something like a concealable chest rig or messenger bag to put it in for those hikes where I need it to remain completely out of sight, but I'd appreciate any input on what you carry your 10mm in, while keeping it hidden.
I live, work, and play in a gun-friendly state, so I don't have to worry about being PC or offending the "anti" crowd. That being said- and that's not aimed at you since you didn't state your reasons for for concealed carry on the trail- a fanny pack might be just the ticket for you.
When I am out in the wilds, I use a Simply Rugged Chesty Puller system for chest carry with my regular Galco belt Holster. If the gun is not on my chest then it is on my hip in the aforementioned Galco.
I don't use the Chesty for "concealed carry" per se, but it is a moment's work to close a flannel shirt or zip a hoodie if people approach. As a rule, I do not conceal when I am in the wild spaces- too many nasty critters around here. But, following the "Gray Man" doctrine, I do not prefer to let people know that I am armed. Until they need to know.
Again, I live in The Great Free State of Idaho, and people here do not wet their pants over seeing a gun on your hip whether you are in Walmart, Cabela's or Nordstrom's.
Thanks for that. I live in Utah - and 90% of where I go carrying openly is not a problem. It's the occasional hike that starts in the heavily touristed areas that concern me. I don't really care if people see my handgun, I just don't need the stupid reactions that come with it. And, sometimes, I'll hike with a youth group where it's better to keep the guns under wraps.
Hill People Gear Runner's bag, they're great.

+2 on the Simply Rugged System Woods_Walker is using. With their adapter you can chest carry most of the holsters you already own for every revolver/pistol you own. The only style that does not fit is the occasional super wide pancake style where the belt loops are too far apart to fit into the adapter.
Thanks, Everyone! This gives me a lot of options!
I just bought this holster and it works great. It can be used as a chest holster or a vertical shoulder type rig. Excellent construction and materials. Can beat the price. Can hold a number of different handguns.
