Title: Rock Island FSHC ... Should I?
Post by: Buddy10mm on October 24 2019 08:08:57 PM MDT
My LGS has a full size RI 16 rounder, used, in pretty good condition.  Based on all the posts I've read here, people seem to love theirs and have no (or very few) problems with them. I already own a Dan Wesson Razorback, but I'd like something a little less expensive and less sentimental to carry when I'm out hiking and desert-hounding.  The weight won't be a problem.  So... if you could snag one for a little under $500, would you?

Let me say it this way, if you don't want it, is it in Texas? I'll go get it for $500.00.

Not if I beat you.  For $500 I will be happy to have two.

Absolutely, now you just need to order a few boxes of Underwood's 135gr Ammo, way serious fun : )

I can neither confirm nor deny that I've already started browsing ammo options.
I shot it Friday... What a Blast!  I'm used to the 8-9 in my Razorback. When I got to 9 and just kept going, and going, and going... well I may have grinned a little like an idiot. ;D

First you grin, then you get down to work, then you wonder if you are ever going to run out of rounds.

Thanks for the advice on this, you all!  I'm really loving this handgun.  I think it's going to become my new go-to for general use.  I wouldn't have jumped on it so quickly without your advice.

Yeah, I'd say you got a deal.  It's so nice to get the pre-owned gun you want--the only time I don't buy used is when I happen to have a hankerin' for a model that I just can't find used. "Sixteen rounds of 10 millimeter firepower", when said with just the right affected voice, can really make a fella chuckle with delight.

Absolutely, I'm pretty sure I get that same grin every time I take the RIA Ultra out. It has been one of those guns that just makes me smile : )

I know 5he op said "under $500", but you can pick one of these up anyday brand new for $525 (g4g) I like my 52000 bit it's too heavy for carrying (for me anyway) ended up as a range only gun for me

So far I'm not finding it that much more onerous than a single stack 1911, and, for the desert and the mountains, the extra rounds are worth the extra weight. It was just under $525 out the door, taxes included, and I was shooting it later that day.  I don't really have much to complain about so far... in fact, I can't think of anything to complain about!  And man, the grins on rounds 9-16!

I've not seen one anywhere for much under $600...G4G has one and it' $595, which is definitely the lowest price I've seen.  Maybe you're looking at the single stack version?

$640.00 at Buds, but I'm sure they can be found for less on GB or other. Mine was in the mid 600 hundreds sometime back, but none were to be found in my area, and I wanted it bad : )

Top 5 were Gmidwest, g4g,hinterland,tooele,& Hoosier

If I had to choose one single aspect of the RIA Ultra that I like the most, it would be the general 'utility' look.  I grew up with a dad who wouldn't have a civilian firearm other than the shotgun--other than the 870, it was war surplus. I really grew up in a firearm environment where 'pretty' was an FN FAL, and anything prettier than that wasn't too welcome. If it wasn't Parkerized, it wasn't worth having. 'New' meant it still had Cosmoline poured into it somewhere.

So, that's what I love most about this 1911.  Second most is the mass.  I'm not carrying it anywhere, so the heft is nice, and with medium to medium-hot loads...the M1 Abrams of 10mm auto pistols is sweet indeed.

The paisto resisto :D is the price. It's a real satisfaction knowing I saved enough money over having purchased many other options to buy a complete Dillon reloading outfit...easily. I really prefer to shoot rather than admire a 'fine handcrafted firearm'.  I have two of those 'armchair' guns that I spent too much on and love to wipe with a soft cloth and admire...but that's enough. They're all meant for shooting, and the RIA is begging for the 5,000 rds it needs to feel a part of the family.  No molly-coddling tolerated, and some abuse maybe welcomed. No hard feelings if it starts to show holster scrub--heck it might even look a little better with the grip wrapped in that cloth electricians tape.

It's a favorite, I'm glad you're getting to enjoy yours.
