Hello. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and recently have acquired a Glock 40 mos stock. I did a load work up with long shot.
I worked up from 8.8g to 9.8 in .2 grain increments. Loading a hornady 280g xtp with starline brass and Winchester WLP. I didn't chrono these as I was looking for accuracy and pressure signs to begin with. I'm looking for 1300+ as this will be a hunting load and this is just what I do.
9.8 grouped well, unfortunately I had a smiley on my last piece of brass shot. I usually shoot 5 pieces when testing then if I find something I think may work I load more.
Winchester wlp
Longshot powder 9.8g
Hornday 180g xtp
.4220 case
.4215 crimp
Coal is 1.260
Cycles fine with no feed issues so far
Brass ejected around 5-6'
A little soot in case but not anything bad.
Can y'all help me get this glock set up to handle hot loads. This is the first glock I've owned. I have mainly shot 1911 in 45 acp for most of my pistol life. Any tips and help is greatly appreciated as I have fallen in love with this round on paper.
Thanks
AVS23, Welcome to the forum. I will say that the SMILEY at 9.8 is why I stop at 9.6 grains with Longshot and 180 grain HP's. If you are shooting the Factory 6" barrel you are likely at 1320 fps.
Yes, with the correct setup aftermarket barrels, heavy recoil spring setups, new brass, it has been pushed to 10.0 grains of Longshot, but your brass may be questionable after it has been shot...
I run a non captive 22 lbs recoil setup on my G-20SF, if I test above 9.6 grains, I switch to the 24 lbs recoil springs to increase dwell time and control slide speeds.
Not all brass are the same, used brass may not hold up above 9.6 - 9.8 grains with the 180's. You could just stop like I do at 9.6 and be happy with your ammo and save your brass from being over worked.
Appears to be sound advice. Any suggestion on a powder that may be able to achieve higher velocities on the 180g bullets without overworking the brass?
Also I've done some research and think I will definitely be buying an aftermarket barrel. Suggestions on a brand?
Well here lately the aftermarket barrels are KKM mostly as LWD dropped their line.
Bar-Sto is on the expensive side but usually a quality barrel, not sure if they are making the longer tube for the G-40's...
Some are having good results with AA#9, If you take and hand weigh 800x it to can produce upper velocities as well...
Good recoil systems have come out and may be better suited for the G-40 even with its heavier slide.
Good luck with your quest.
Very much appreciated. I'm sure I'll be around.
I have found the recoil difference between an OEM Gen 3 G20 and and OEM G40 to be great. A 180gr XTP with 9.5 gr of Longshot in the ORM Gen3 G20 is a rip snorter of a load with considerable recoil and slide velocity. The same load in a G40 (Gen 4 springs) is a fairly easy shooting load. I had to put a stronger spring on the Gen 3 G20 but still found it a violent load. Yet it is easy in the G40.
KKM aftermarket barrels run well in Glock's. My G40 has the 6" KKM barrel. It gives about 50 fps more velocity and takes much better care of the brass. I did a bunch of testing with AA9 with the G40 and the 180/200 gr XTP's. Never got the velocities hoped for. Others have done much better though.
With the G40 OEM barrel 9.5gr of Longshot gives me about 1,275 fps. With the KKM barrel it gives about 1,325 fps (my data is not exact as it overlaps from other projects/guns). I think you'll find the sweet spot somewhere between 9.2 and 9.5 gr of Longshot in your G40. I will always trade a bit of velocity for an increase in accuracy and/or follow up shots.
I recently got a G20 and want to load up the same, some 180gr XTPs. Hornady #10 lists 8.2gr as max with that bullet and Longshot powder. Is that data just severely lawyered down?
I loaded up some Precision Delta 180gr bullets with 9.2gr and they were fine. Hodgdon lists 9.5gr as max with a 180gr Sierra bullet.

that would be some load at a 280g xtp... :)
Lol hell yeah...
After playing around between 9.2-9.8g I've settled with 9.4. Brass was good after firing and accuracy was good (other than my 50yard attempts with irons.) I plan to chrono these soon.
I definitely will be purchasing a KKM barrel.
I was going by the load data from the powder manufacturer. From my reading and research a lot of the 10mm rounds are watered down except for A few from certain boutique ammo companies. Likewise I would say for the bullet manufacturers to follow suit as with the mainstream ammo producers
Forgive any idiotic grammar/mistype mistakes, I mostly get on here with my
Phone.
We all make mistakes.... Esp with auto corrected phones.
No issue, good luck with the loads.
