Title: Revolver-Palooza Yesterday
Post by: Graybeard on June 25 2019 08:21:41 AM MDT
Thought I'd share this from a trip to the range yesterday. A friend and I decided to dig into our gun safes and try out several of our revolvers for a side by side comparison of triggers in double action mode. The guns included late 60's Colt Cobra and Detective Special, a 4" Colt Python and a 4" Colt .357, and my new Kimber K6S 3" DASA. None have had any trigger work and all are very low mileage guns.

From best to worst we decided the order was, Python, K6S, Colt .357, Detective Special, Cobra. None were really bad at all. The Cobra had just a tad of a rachety feel compared to the DS. The K6S was just a smooth as the Python, just a bit heavier, as was the Colt .357. The K6S was the hands down winner for best sights.

I really think this speaks volumes for the K6S comparing so favorably to the Python. I've noticed the K6S really whacks the primers so I would bet it could be tuned lighter and still be reliable.

That is good feedback.  I have a hole in my collection right now for a small 6 shot 38/357 revolver.  For many years I have lusted after a Detective Special, but they are generally more money than I am willing to spend.  The new Cobra was promising, until I read reviews and then handled one.  What a POS money grab.  The K6S though, looks like the actual successor and succeeder to the concept of the DS.

This report has pretty much sealed the deal in my mind.  Just gotta track one down now.

I agree completely re the new Cobra. Handled a couple and passed on that idea.

There is an excellent condition DS in a local gun shop for $800 that was really calling to me. I bought the K6S for $819 from Grabagun. Stainless steel, better sights, better trigger, .357, and that I'll actually carry it without sweating on the beautiful bluing of the DS, made up my mind.

An interesting feature I noticed on the K6S is the addition of a small lug on the frame, to the rear and just below the cylinder. When you open the gun to eject empties, especially if it's really dirty, the cylinder travels to the rear just slightly and contacts the lug. It serves to take stress off of the crane if you need to really bang them out. I haven't seen it mentioned in any of the reviews and think it's an excellent design feature.

Good luck in your search for one. I hope you are as happy with it as I am with mine.
