Title: OK, so which one ?
Post by: DenStinett on June 13 2019 07:38:26 PM MDT
Setting-up the new Glock 20SF and I'm thinking of adding NiteSights
I can get either OEM Glock GNS04:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/321674976428
or, TruGlo Tritium TG231G2:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/142454403318
Not sure which would be better and/or why
Price isn't a factor in this case
Any input will be appreciated

Another you didn't list. Meprolight.

These are by far the best looking night sights I have ever seen. They tend to be better priced than trijicon too. Much brighter as well.

Actually, the TFX sights don't have a metal ring to lock the fiber optic and tritium vial in place. I know because mine came apart. I got a pretty snotty response from TruGlo customer service when I contacted them about it. The TFX Pro sights are supposed to be tougher. They eventually replaced my failed sight, but it wasn't fast or easy.

The Meprolight sights are steel, no fiber optic. I concur about them being the brightest at night.

Thanks for all the great input Guys

I have a set of Meprolights that I had customized to fit on my Delta Gold Cup
They work great, but I found; if you don't set them out in the sun (for a while) before a "Nite Shoot", they aren't super visible
Same with the set I put on my CZ75
I guess that's the way of it, when it comes to Tritium anyway !

But ya'know, the Mepros may be the way to go with this build too

Another issue with the truglo fiber sights is solvents. If you aren't careful when cleaning they will milk over and get very dull appearing.

I run either the Glock factory (I can have a set installed locally for about $60) or the Ameriglo ones with the orange front dot.

Forgive my rant here, but I have had nothing but trouble with truglow fiber optics. I think every set of Tru glow whether fiber optic only or fiber/night hybrid have all lost the fiber within 500rds.

I will never buy a set for that reason. Maybe they survive well on 9mm but my 10s and 45s ate them way too often. I also avoid a gun that has these from the factory unless I can find proper aftermarket sights that don't fall apart within a year.

Sig replaced the front sight of my gt20 twice within the first year cause the fiber fell out. The third time i had them send the sight to me and I put it in the box and bought a proper sight for it. If I ever sell it I have the OEM junk sight should a new owner wish to install it.

OK, so I forgot I placed a "blind bid" on a set of TruGlo Tritium TG231G2 Sights    ???
And .... I won (yay !)    :o
I go to inatall them today .... and ....
The Front Sight Screw is so close to the (inside) front of the Slide, nothing (not even an Armorer's Tool) can fit between the Head and the Slide
No biggy, I get my 3/16th Open End and after a gajillion turns I get the Screw out and OEM Sight out
Clean-up the hole, a dab of LocTite, fumble around and finally get the tiny new Screw started
1/2 a gajillion turns and voila, she's in and (tight)   ;)

Next, I get my handy-dandy Universal Sight Tool and press-out the Rear Sight (after marking its center on the Slide)
Reverse the Pusher and install the new Rear to the "mark"
Grab my Laser Bore Sight and .... WAIT ! ! !  what the #e[[
The thing is almost 8" right at 10yds
So I push the Sight to zero, and it's almost sticking out the side of the Slide
WAIT .... what ? ? ? that can't be right ! ! !
Pull the Bore Sight out .... re-install it .... yeah, we're zeroed
" Come-on ! ! ! "
So I really get to looking .... AND .... then I see it
The Front Sight doesn't look to be centered in the front of the Slide

So I grab my Calipers and:
Width of Slide:  1.125"
Width of Sight: 0.143"
Left side to Sight: 0.480"
Right side to Sight: 0.502"
Well, the math bares it out
It's crazy how just that tiny 11/1000 of an inch difference can really make a big difference !
Now what ?
Do I contact Glock and pitch a bi+<# ? ? ?
Thoughts ?

How was it shooting before the modification? If it was shooting okay then Glock might not feel responsible.

To be honest, I haven't shot it yet
Been doing all of the Upgrades first
First chance I get, I'll pull the TruGlo Front off and Mic the Oval in the Slide
That'll be the truth in the pudding
Slide or Sight ?   ;)

Yeah, that'd work; if it's a plain Front Blade
BUT, that won't help move that Tritium Dot !

OK, so I pulled the TruGlo Front Sight Blade today and Mic'ed from the Oval Hole in the Slide to each side (as best I could), front and back
The front end of the Oval was dead on at 0.495 and 0.495
But the rear; it was off, 0.490 and 0.500
That answers the appearance of the "Off Center" Front Sight Blade
Luckily, there was enough play in the machining of the Front Sight Base that I could rotate / force the Blade around enough to be "centered" and "inline" with the Slide
Now it Mics at 0.491, 0.491 (Front and Rear) and it also Zeroed with the Bore Sight
Bottom-line: I'd say Glock still missed with their machining, but I was able to work with it, given the tolerances in the machining of Sight Base
Now to make time to get it to the Range and dial IT and the Advantage Arms .22 Conversion Unit in
