Title: Kimber Custom II 10mm.....Any Opinions?
Post by: Papajohn on June 01 2019 01:58:55 PM MDT
I fell in lust with a Kimber 10mm this week, I took a friend to my favorite gun emporium so he could buy a Kimber 1911 he'd been hankering after, and while he was doing his paperwork he "accidentally" mentioned that there was a Kimber 10mm in the case.  My inner Jewish Man gasped and fainted, because I've been longing for another 10mm pistol since I sold my EAA Witness.   This is kind of a no-frills gun, which is fine, I'd probably carry it in the woods and scuff it up over time.  But while Kimbers used to be consistently overpriced locally, prices have come down of late and older or discontinued models can be had fairly inexpensively.  I had almost talked myself out of considering it when I made the mistake of looking at the price tag, it was $669 and I knew right them I'd have to put it on layaway.

I know it only comes with one magazine, which is obnoxious, but I already have holsters for it, already load for a 10mm carbine, and have a ton of components for it.  I have a bunch of 1911's, but all are 45ACP's.  Am I letting my lust get in the way of logic, or are these pretty neat guns?

Solid gun.  $700 is a good price for NIB.  Personally I went Ruger for my single stack 1911, but nothing wrong with this choice.

IMHO, anything that shoots 10mm is a pretty neat gun.  :P

Thats a good buy at that price. A quick look on GB shows a BUY IT NOW lowest price as $650.

$669 seems really cheap. A few years ago I had a Kimber Custom TLE/RL II 10mm and I paid $1,100 for it ( a reasonable price). It came with night sights and the light rail, which I guess would raise the price from your non Rail model. I always liked how Kimbers came right out of the box with night sights, match trigger, and match barrel. It was a decent 1911. I always dumped the cheap, Kimber supplied magazine and bought Wilson Combat magazines. I noticed that the blued models have a terrible blue finish that tends to rust easily. The chintzy bluing and the cheap magazine are the only issues that I ever had with any of the Kimber 1911 pistols that I owned.

But, I have since moved up the 1911 food chain to two Dan Wesson 1911's in 10mm, the Silverback and a Stainless Specialist Commander. The quality is much better than Kimber, Colt, and any number of other $1,000 and below 1911 pistols. Check out one of the Dan Wesson Specialist models or their Valor models. The match trigger is fantastic. I also have a Night Hawk Custom 10mm which cost me almost twice as much as my stainless  Specialist Commander and the Specialist Commander is almost just as good as the NHC as far as the match grade trigger and the slide to frame fit and smoothness.

It's the Kimber GFO (Shot Show Special).  I own one and it shoots great.  Mine does give me "brass kisses" to the slide behind the ejection port.  Kimber indicates they don't offer warranty against their 10mm's doing this due to the "butterfly" ejection pattern of this caliber.  I've read a couple people having problems with theirs but mine runs like a sewing machine with a very consistent ejection pattern.  Various internet retailers have this gun pretty cheap.  I believe Rural King has it on sale right now for $599.99.

Hard to pass on a 10mm Kimber Custom II for under $800 USD.  Since, most of their base-models start at a grand, or slightly more.  Picked-up this Gold Match in .45 ACP for under-a-grand, when Galyan's was still in business.  I like it so-much, that I bought a Target II in 10mm shortly afterwards.  I think, that you will really like your new pistol!

I picked up my Kimber Custom II last Thursday on the way to the range, ran about 50 rounds of handloads through it, and am well pleased.  There were several fail-to-go-into-battery issues, but I expected a bit of break-in would be needed, and I'm in no rush with this one, for now it's just another range toy.   The trigger is around five pounds and pretty crisp, the sights are perfect for my aging (aged) eyes, and it feels like shooting with an old friend.  I have a gaggle of assorted 1911's, but this one seems a tick above the others, maybe just because I love the 10mm.

Thank you all for your input, it helped.

I think we'll be very happy together.   ;D

I know they all look basically alike, but I still think my Custom II is particularly handsome.    But I could be a little biased.

I'm not.  But I'm just saying that I could be!   8)

There are several more magazines and a set of faux-ivory grips due in tomorrow.  It's just too purty to leave in Basic Black.
