Title: Looking for thoughts on a Dan Wesson RZ-10
Post by: deepblue on May 03 2019 05:57:33 PM MDT
My LGS has a lightly used Dan Wesson Razorback RX-10 in 10MM. Asking $1200... probably has wiggle room on $ but seems a little high.
I don't know much about this model but love 10mm. It has plain black fixed sights.

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a used Razor off of GB for $1200. It was like new. Awesome gun! Loved it.
Sold her to upgrade to a Valor.

I looked on GB and the Razors are going for $1350. So, looks like your onto a good deal.

You can find one NIB at Locked N Loaded for $1,284...  https://lockedloaded.com/product/dan-wesson-01907-dw-razorback-rz-10-sao-10mm-5-91-fs-cocobolo-grip-ss

The picture shows different grips, do they still have the cocobolo grips ( I switched out the cocobolo grips on mine too but I'd still want them).

My Dan Wesson RZ-10 is by far my favorite 10mm.  It's an outstandingly accurate, tack driving pistol.  I wouldn't part with mine for $2,000.  It's a simi-custom 1911 and your not likely to beat it with anything short of a custom, hand made 1911 at two or three times the price IMHO.

Depending on the condition, $1,200 isn't a bad deal but you could probably work them down a little bit more if they're motivated to sell.

Just be sure you break it in wet with FP-10, I love mine!

I purchased one off GB that was like new for $955 a couple of weeks ago.  Missed another one for $925 a week later.

The world is going plastic 9mm. It is a good time to buy steel 1911s.

Dang Taylor, thats a good catch.

So deepblue, what did you do?

So I'm still on the fence. I asked about the original grips and yes, the grips would be included.  The gun is very smooth and has a sweet trigger, light, crisp and short reset. I'm not too thrilled with the sights, They are just plain black fixed sights, not even a dot. My last thought is about the mags. Are they specific to the Dan Wesson ? Hard to find ?  I need to do a little more research.

Never seen a sub $1,000 Dan Wesson RZ-10 anywhere and I looked a lot before picking up one!  $1,284 NIB still about the best new price I've seen.

If it's lightly used and in good shape I'd get serious about seeing if you can get the price down and picking it up.....  Tip, use cash and give them a peak for best price (no merchant credit card interchange fees).
Use the fact you'll have to replace the sites as price leverage.

No the mags are not manufacturer specific.
Tripp Research magazines are the best in my opinion but others swear by Wilson Combat and different brands.  .
Good luck!

I really appreciate the input and opinions.

I know the LGS owner pretty well. This gun is a consignment piece. Went there today at closing and he disassembled the gun for me. Went over the whole thing and it appears to be unfired. The barrel has a brilliant shine inside. No wear marks or powder residue anywhere. Said he could knock off $25. So it would be $1175 with the VZ grips and the original grips.

Think I'm sold !!

That's outstanding and it sounds like you got yourself a pretty good deal there.
I'd encourage you to go ahead and change the sights.  In addition to range, mine RZ-10 gets carried on occasion (most often in the winter) and also serves as a home defence option so I recommend the tritium night sights or HiViz sights.

2AinVA already mentioned it but I'll remind you; use FP-10 lubricant to clean it up and break it in.  Dan Wesson recommends using FP-10.  If you don't have it already, Amazon sells it.

Regards!

QuoteThey are just plain black fixed sights

While I love my DW's, I have never been a fan of their sights.

I took NEON ORANGE nail polish to the front sight of mine and it helped greatly.

Before you get the RZ 10, check out their Silverback. I have one and I believe it's a step above the RZ 10. The Specialist is even better. Contact them and ask if they have any "blemished" models for sale. I bought my brand new Silverback "blemished" for $1,400 and the blemish was a tiny pinhead sized scratch on the slide release.

Contact them to inquire about blemished models and any other information. I made a special custom order and their VP for Operations contacted me back within a few hours and took my order himself. I ordered a stainless Specialist Commander in 10mm with night sights and a magwell. A magwell will allow you to make quicker combat reloads, but, require you to use magazines with a bumper pad. Took them about 3 months to make it and send to my FFL dealer.

Reponse:
"I really don't have any way of knowing. We build the guns here then ship them to our Kansas City office. Where they distribute them. You can try contacting a dealer to see if they can locate one for you. "

I bought my 'Razor' a few years-back new, and paid a little north of $1200 USD; if I remember correctly.  It's accurate, solid, and a well-built 1911.
