Got this idea from a post by Sqlbullet. Thought this might be fun. Dumbest of funniest thing you've heard from a gun store clerk, lately.
I recently had a gun store clerk explain to a friend of mine that 1911s are supposed to be held primarily with grip pressure from the sides. Therefore, front grip strap checkering was pointless and if you are using it, you're doing it wrong. I told him I really like the checkering on my 10mm Kimber. He replied,"Oh, 10mm, that's different."
Great idea! I posted this story a couple of years ago.
The short version is...
"10mm?....that's a dying cartridge , If i got one in the store I couldn't sell it for $250 ".
This was from the owner of a small rural gun shop.
This has faded a bit in recent years with the 10mm resurgence, but all through the late '90's and early 2000's you would ask if a store had any 10mm's only to be told they had 40 S&W and it was the "same thing"
Recently had a salesman tell me his first 10mm was a S&W revolver in 1978.
1978?? Must have been a prototype..... :))
A couple of years ago I stopped in a new store/range. All four of the clerks had drop leg, tacticool holsters with Glocks in them. They basically ignored me as they were clustered in a group, looking at the front door. They were engaged in an animated discussion regarding how cool it would be if someone tried to rob them and how badly it would work out for the robbers. Meanwhile, I'm standing behind them, gun bag in hand..... Really thought about yelling bang, bang, bang, bang, dumbasses! The rest of my experience on their range made it clear I wouldn't ever go back.
A couple weeks ago my wife walked into our LGS, where my buddy works, to buy me a light for my Glock 23 nightstand gun for Valentine's Day (keeper, right?). She walks, in, tells the guy the brand she wants, and that it is for a Glock. Three times she saws "this fits a Glock, right?". Guy assures her and she buys it and brings it home.
It wasn't for a Glock.
I text my buddy who works there and tell him what happened. He confronts his co-worker, who confirms she asked for one that fit a Glock but he sold her something else. Buddy asked why, and he said "because that's what we had on the shelf".
Told my buddy they better do some corrective training because if he didn't work there that's the sort of behavior that would have me finding a new LGS...
That's a bummer Spaniel. On the bright side, you now need a new gun that fits that light :D

LOL. I once justified a 41Mag because I accidentally bought a lb of H110 and needed something to burn it in. But no, my gun store friend had a use for that model, so he got the right one and we swapped.
Most I overhear is 10mm to never before gun owners and stopping grizzlies.
In the earlier days of Kel-tec, I asked to look at one in the case. The smug clerk pulled it out with a condescending smirk on his face, showed the chamber was clear, and as he was handing it to me he said "It's a piece of shit".
I replied "Really???" He responds "Oh yeah!" I looked him right in the eye and asked him why the hell they were selling piece of shit guns?? He had no reply as I set it down and walked out.
Sam
Good humor : )
Bought a 357 and went to buy some boolits at Academy . They had a couple boxes of monarch and a few of empty areas for other brands , I asked if someone forgot to order them and the clerk told me they were out of season!!
"Do tell young man!" "What season would that be?" The stammering commenced lol.
Yea, some shops are funny, if they are all knowing, arrogant, and or treat me poorly, I first let them know that they have lost yet another paying customer due to the "I know everything about everything mentality and most all of my costumers are dumbasses" At that point I exit the store...empty handed. I do not get to this point quickly, but dangit, no one is an expert in all areas
Out of season! Good one.
I was in a Dunham's about 30 yrs ago talking to the gun counter clerk. Nice enough guy, but went on and on about certain gun and holster combinations. When I finally asked what the problem was with gun x and holster y, he said, "Well, that's how I shot myself in the leg!" I'll never forget that one.
I don't appreciate the stereotypes of all gun store clerks are morons. I've helped as a clerk in my friends shop hundreds of times over the last 15 years. I damn sure know more about guns than 99.5% of people that graced those doors.
For sure, I have one shop that I do 99% of my business at. The folks there are not only extremely knowledgeable, but are really fun to just hang out with

It wasn't my intention in starting this thread to insinuate that all gun store clerks are morons. I would say that the vast majority I've met in the 42 years I've been involved in shooting sports are not. I was only hoping to swap a few stories of those that are sub par and hopefully with a little humor.
If you want to include dumb things said by customers, please do. I'd be happy to start that off. I was at the gun shop/indoor range some friends of mine own. A guy comes off the range into the shop and wants to complain about the ammo they sold him. He has a 9mm case in his hand that's 9mm at the base and the top half has expanded to .40 almost perfectly. The fact that he had 9mm and .40 Glocks with him wasn't enough of a clue. :)

Easy there Overkill.... No reason to get your feathers ruffled, no personal offense intended. Nowhere in this thread does
anyone even obliquely suggest
ALL gun store clerks are morons. I'll bet everyone here will agree that the overwhelming majority of their interactions with gun store personnel have been polite, respectful, constructive, educational & funny! In my case, some have become personal friends.
That doesn't diminish in the slightest the examples ranging from pompous, curmudgeon, arrogant, condescending, factually challenged and uninformed, tacticool Delta Force operators that at one occasion or another we've all encountered working at a gun store & gun shows.
That's what makes this thread funny regardless of where your from funny so funny.
About 25 years ago I was in a LGS shopping for a Sig P220 in 45 acp (before the days of the Internet).
I owned a couple other pistols at the time but not 45 acp yet. I'd been thinking about it and done enough research to decide the Sig P220 was the way I was going. I was out shopping that day specifically to buy a new pistol.
So I'm at the counter looking at the merchandise. With a huff & hard look from head to toe and prejudged disdain for lost valuable newspaper reading time the crusty curmudgeon ambled over to the sales counter when I asked to see the Sig. They had the model I was looking for and on examination it was a good specimen (no I didn't dry fire it). The salesman couldn't have been more bored and less helpful if he tried. While examining the pistol (I'd made up my mind to buy it), I politely enquired about what brands & quanties of 45 ammo they had had in stock. Still maintaining the same disapproving look of disdain the clerk flatly informed me "kid, if you need to ask how much the ammo is you can't afford it or the pistol." I laughed, handed him back the pistol, apologized for disturbing his newspaper reading time and walked out of the store. Drove to the next nearest LGS that had the model I was looking for and a polite salesperson. 30 minutes after that I drove home with my new pistol, a case of practice ammo and several boxes of defensive ammo.

I jumped the gun, and you have my apologies. Trust me, I've ran into some nice ones in my days too. There's been more than one helping in the same shop I have, that couldnt tell you the difference in Boxer vs Berdan.
No apology necessary. All we needed here was a little clarification ;)
Careful KenK (no one is an expert in all areas). You'll tick off trump. :))
