Title: Newbie here to 10 mm reloading W/?S
Post by: Oltruckie on February 23 2019 06:01:41 AM MST
Newbie here, New to reloading the 10mm but not to reloading in general
Picked up my secound 10mm pistol yesterday a 30 year old Delta, & DW Razorback
I've got dies, cases, New Starline, once fired Master, and Winchester on hand. Lg assortment of LPP
Both standard and magnum. With powders of 231 my favorite for 45acp, power pistol,Be86, & Unique
Bullets on hand 180 GDHP, and 180 Hornady XTPs.
With 180 tmj Armscor on the way.

I'm seeking to load light loads to start thought to try my hand at using 231 initially and work up

I was looking at the .40 loads for the Speer 155 tmj s would those loads be reasonable to approach on the high side in/using 10 mm cases and the 1.250 col with LPP, ?
Any suggestions for milder accurate 10 loads would be great?
Planning on picking up a Lb of blue dot also.

Trying to Put together a supply of reloading components local ranges require jacketed bullets mostly

My SD loads are factory win Silvertips 175gr and Corbon 165s

Welcome to the forum Oltruckie!  Are you by chance a Oltruckie Fireman?
While there are loads for 231 to push some rounds in 10mm, use care because the 231 powder is a faster burning powder.
Hodgdon shows starting loads with 231 and a 155 grain XTP 5.8 grains making 1030 FPS @ 23,000 PSI and their max load is shown as 7.3 grains making 1253 FPS @ 35,700 PSI.

BE-86 is a good powder having some flash deterrents, clean burning and it meters very well.
Power Pistol is a great powder but is can exhibit a bright flash, clean burning and it meters very well.
Unique will also work for it can be a little dirty but is a good target power for many cartridges.
Blue Dot has always provided me some of my most accurate Match Grade loads in several different cartridges. For 10mm the 175 -180 grain bullets using 10.4 grains has been very accurate.

Here is the link to a bunch of loading data compiled here on the forum

Yes Retired Firefighter, cut my teeth on A tiller,
The_Shadow, Thank you for the info
I planned on starting a few loads with 231 At starting weights, along w/BE86
I've got approximately 2 lbs of 231 left if I can find a good powder for both 45acp and the 10mm then I'd order up a bunch I guess I Just need to read and study some more.
1911 junkie here with an occasional Glock thrown in.  I've jumped in to the deep end of the pool now when it comes to the 10mm

I'd have to go along with Shadow on this. 231, Bullseye, fast powders in general don't do well in 10mm. Basically, if you use it for .45acp or .38special, it isn't a good choice for 10mm. If you want true 10mm performance, I would add Longshot and 800X to the list. If you try 800X be very careful. It meters terribly. If you're going for speed, 800X, Longshot, and Power Pistol will get you there. Also agree that the 180gr/10.4gr Bluedot load is very accurate. Welcome and good luck!

I use AA#5 for FBI light loads, AA#9 for real deal 10mm loads (180 gr hardcast at 1350 fps published).
AA meters well, burns clean.

Welcome Oltruckie,
I would seriously look at Blue Dot for 180gr loads, amazingly accurate 😊

I am with Univibe endorsing AA powder. They do give some top performance and being ball powder they measure great in a Dillon progressive. The downside is load density, you do use more powder. I use AA9 for loading bullets 180gr and above, AA7 for bullets below 180gr. The AA powders aren't the only good performers, the others have mentioned quite a few good powders, it just depends on your preference. If you're into heavy stuff I would like to give Travis Frick a plug, he makes a custom hardcast swc, he makes the .41 215gr and sizes them to .401. They make a great woods load as well as a low velocity target load. I currently use the 215 with SR4756(no longer available but you can use other good powders) for a low velocity target round @1000fps. The pulldown data of factory ammunition on this site is very helpful also!

I agree with everything posted above. If you want a versatile powder you want to look at Power Pistol, BE-86, Lovex Heavy Pistol / AA #9. I found some Lovex Heavy Pistol during the powder shortages and love it.

Adding to PCFlorida's post here Heavy Pistol is a rebranded product of LOVEX (D037-02) powder by Shooter's World...
