In the past years Hodgdon H110 was shown as giving a little more velocity over the same weight of Winchester 296
Here is Hornady 3rd edition load data
Hodgdon H110 using 23.5 grains @ 1450 fps max load
Wincheste 296 using 23.8 grains @ 1400 fps max load
Thanks Shadow.
Did you do a comparison of the case capacity of the AMP case and a Rem Mag case. I did one years ago when Starline first started producing the 44 AMP brass but I really don't remember the results.
Handloader magazine, September/October 1974 article by George Nonte listed his load as 25 grains of 296 with a 240 grain bullet yielding a velocity of 1515 fps from a 6 1/2" barrel and 43,000 cup.
Handloader magazine from November/December of 1976 shows 27 grains of 296 yielding a velocity of 1590 fps from a 6 1/2" barrel, no pressure data given.
One has to remember in those years they were using cut down and neck reamed 308 and 30.06 brass which I have found had a much lower case capacity than Starline.
The intended working pressure for the Auto Mags was between 45,000 and 50,000 cup.
It was mentioned in the Hornady book that they were using cut down and reamed 308 / 30'06 in their testing. The Starline brass does seem to have better volume, the interior is straighter down deeper into the casing. I didn't try to do a water capacity measure.
Here is Starline's info
