Title: Best value bullets for full power 10mm
Post by: jtracy1223 on November 26 2018 06:06:15 PM MST
Just about burned threw my first 300 reloads using hornady xtp in 180gr and 155gr. Xtp's have always worked well for me but they are kinda pricey when your just punching paper and exploding water jugs. I would like to save some cash and buy a case of 1000 bullets that i would like to be able to load to the full potential of the 10mm. I was thinking i would like to run 180 grain bullets at 1200 fps and maybe a little higher. It seems plated bullets are about the cheapest option but i have never used them beside in some mild 45acp loads. I dont know if they will stand up to that kind of speed and remain in tact and accurate. The next option is bullet company's like zero, persistion delta or Montana gold. They all offer 1000 rounds of jhp bullets for $130-$150 shipped. I know they are probably not ment to be used as self defence hollow points (i buy factory for sd anyway) but they would surely offer more expantion than a fmj if they had to be repurposed from range fodder to shtf zombie apocalypse ammo. It would be nice to find old school low tech remington or winchester hollow points in stock at a reasonable price but i have all but given up on that. Whats everyone's opinion? What do you use for full power range reloads?

My new favorite are Speer Gold dot TMJ 180 gr. They have them at Graf and Sons for about 15 cents around.

I have been buying pulled 180 gr. HST bullets from American Reloading. they come in 500 packs and are about the same price as 500 plated bullets. and when they get pulled plated bullets in, they are really cheap!

Rocky Mountain Reloading has a heck of a bunch of pulled 155 grain Gold Dots at fair prices right now as well.  This is in addition to their other bullets in stock.

How do the hst's hold up at 1200+ fps? I have considered trying the pulled bullets from American reloading but was unsure if they would over expand at high speeds. I guess as long as they hold together tell they hit the target and are reasonably accurate it doesn't matter for plinking ammo.

I have been loading them over 9.5 gr. of Blue Dot. my Alpha Chroney isn't working and I can't get the MagnetoSpeed to attach to my Witness so I'm not sure  how fast they are going . also I haven't shot any game with them yet so I can't vouch for their performance when they hit meat but they shoot fine. I would think they will be good on thin skinned game (or bad guys)but wouldn't use them for grizzly bear defense.

I've recovered many heavy plated 180s at the local range... dense foam blocks for stoppage.
at 1200-1300 fps, no plating damage even tho sometimes slightly deformed...you can see the rifling on the bullets.

As per Xtreme site;
Any velocities over 1200 FPS we recommend either our Heavy Plate Concave Base or Hollow Point products for superior accuracy. We recommend keeping velocities to less than 1500 FPS (Feet Per Second) and using only a light taper crimp

I loaded up on the 180 HST's like Blaster.  They hold up fine for punching paper, shooting steel or exploding jugs/potatoes/etc.

I also cast a bunch of bullets, which also work fine for those pursuits.

For reloading for more serious situations, I favor Nosler 200 grain bullets as I can usually get them for about the half the price of XTP's.

If you have not, subscribe to Rocky Mountain Reloading and American Reloading.  I got some new XTP's from them a while back at a great price.  They have always been great to work with and genuinely have good deals most of the time.

I have been pretty much exclusive shooting cast bullets the past couple of years. My own cast and coated, mostly, and some commercial Hi-Tek coated. They work great. For me, more accurate than plated bullets. My costs are about $15 per thousand.

The key is to be sure that the cast bullets are sized at least 1 thou over groove diameter or leading and poor groups will result.

It also might mean that the standard expander plug is too small for wider/softer cast bullets. My solution has been to retrofit an RCBS expander die with a 401 Cowboy expander plug. Sold as a 38-40 WCF expander at Midwayusa. The shank is a touch wider, and it is about as long as the bearing surface of a 200 gr cast, so it expands deeper into the case. They are also M style, and I like that for starting the bullets straight.

I'll second that!
I get them with gas-checks to prevent any leading issues.
They fly very accurately in my Colt and Rock Island 1911s.

Great company, great bullets (I've also shot his 165g, 185g, & 200g 10mm offerings, with GCs when available).
The 165s are hard to make OAL.
The 180s are definitely my favs.

You almost really bummed me out there because I ordered some this last summer and I'm almost out now..
The 180g w/gas checks are listed under 38-40 caliber... I usually order them sized to .401"
https://www.montanabulletworks.com/product/3840-lbt-180gr-lfn-gc/

He lists the 200g LBT projo w/GC on the 10mm page.
His non-GC 185g projos on that page fly good too... His hard alloy is pretty much non-leading at medium to even high speeds..

They look like very nice cast bullets but we were talking (or at least i thought) about Missouri bullet company not Montana bullet works. At $135 for 500 bullets the gas check rounds from Montana bullet works they are not really in the running for "best value". Missouri bullet company however offers 500 coated 200 grain tcfp bullets for $50. Im sure Montana bullet works offer a very high quality product but for punching paper with full power loads they a way to pricey for my budget.

Dooooooo,
Missouri, Montana, that's pretty close isn't it.?
LoL....
sorry about that....
I use Ranier copper jacketed projos for practice in most calibers.
For 10mm I've pushed their 165g versions up to @1250fps for paper killing, but I don't think they recommend more than @1300fps for their projos.
They can be bought for around $100/1000 at Midway when they go "on sale". Sometimes you can even get them shipped for free...

Sorry about that... The Montanas are nice pros though. The non gas checked ones are a little less $ too...

If you want to shoot jacketed bullets, give Everglades Reloading a look. They apparently have a bullet maker that makes bullets for them. No clue as to who it might be but they are priced right for jacketed stuff. They carry plated and lead too.
https://www.evergladesammo.com/bullets/handgun-bullets.html?caliber=5

I also buy from American Reloading but you have to check their website often. They will put up something like the 180gr HST bullets for $60.00 per 500 but they don't last but an hour or so. They have mixed weight bullets if you have the time to separate them for cheap. Most of their bullets will be pulled bullets but sometimes they have new name brand bullets too, for cheap. Since they just moved last week, they're out of a lot of bullets.

HAP are my favorite high velocity 10mm bullets. They are very accurate. Watch for sales.

I have used plated bullets sometimes above FPS rating. I was worried about accuracy, and from a bench rest, it's detectable 50yards+, but not noticeably poor. I suppose the other worry is copper build up in the barrel. Maybe I don't shoot enough, as this doesn't seem to be a concern.

Nice, I would take these over the HST's. These are also some of the easiest feeding hollow points.

They feed great in all my 10mm barrels.  Feeding seems to be my main issue these days.

Heavy or thick plated bullets from Berrys or Xtreme work good.

I used a great deal of Xtreme bullets when I was only feeding 9, 40 & 45. Since I started with 357 Sig, 9X25 Dillon and 10mm, I have started buying almost exclusively from Montana Gold http://montanagoldbullet.com/ and Precision Delta https://www.precisiondelta.com/

Both offer great projectiles, Precision Delta gets the "nod" for fast shipping.....
Last month I placed orders from PD and MidwayUSA on the same day. My package from PD was on my porch BEFORE the Midway package even left the warehouse!
