Title: My idea for 200gr Gold Dots
Post by: Overkill338 on November 17 2018 09:05:34 PM MST
I'd like to buy some and send them to someone who handloads. I sold all my equipment when I moved in with my wife.

Then have you pull the bullets and reload them to 1200 from a 5" barrel. Then if possible shoot them into some gel . Any of you recycling gel blocks ?

After having done the pull-down documentations and also others that did them, the Speer 200 GD's have bullet sealant on them.  This made them very difficult to pull using a kinetic puller.  They actually had the primer pellets break apart and mix with the powder.  If you find someone to pull them remind them of this and have the primers replaced before reloading.

I have begged Speer and RCBS to sell the 10mm/0.400" 200 grain Gold Dots as a handloading component...still waiting!

I was thinking of you or mrrevolver. Lol I guess you dont want to do it.

I wonder if my friend at Underwood would do it if I mailed them the bullets?

By the way, I used to but cartridges in the shell holder on the brass and use channellocks with inner tube over them. Raise the bullet up until it sticks through the top z squeeze the pliars snug on the bullet and lower press slowly with the pliars catching the top of the press. Most just slide right out.

Also, you could put them in a ziplock bag, sealed in another and drop them in some very very hot water. That should loosen the sealant up with no risk to you.

The issue with pulling the bullets with pliers or some of the clamp or collet type pullers the bullet could be damaged and may change its performance if crushed.
If you are looking for 1200 fps I would suggest 9.0 gr. - 9.2 gr. of Longshot powder.  I loaded the older style 200 grain Gold Dots that were pulled from a 40S&W ammo contract using the 9.2 grains LS powder with them running 1225 fps from my S&W 1006

1200 was Coopers magic number, so it just seems right.  :)

Well actually Lt.Col. Jeff Cooper's specs were for a 200 grain 40cal bullet at 1000 fps  The formula was 40/200/1000.

However Mike Dixon when he spec'ed the ammo for 1150 fps to be made by NORMA.  He bumped up the numbers because he knew manufactures fudged the velocity claims but NORMA actually exceeded the numbers. The NORMA 10mm ammo was said to be 1260 fps with the 200grain FMJ Truncated Cone.

Here is an article I wrote and References are from the book "Bren Ten The Heir Apparent" written by Ronald A. Carrillo.

If that's the case, then Speer met it, sadly. That new 200 is under 1100.

In more ways than one.  From my G29 that 200 grain load is going to right on the money in the FBI ballistics gel tests.

I personally never feel more energy is bad.  But guys that worship at the alter of the ballistics test do, and test results sell ammo.  So, Speer is loading to the test results.

What speed from your 29 ? Have you gel tested it ?

I haven't. And I don't have any of that load.  But if you look at the lucky gunner tests the 200 grain Speer from a Glock 20 (4.6") came in just barely over the FBI spec of 18".  Figure you will loose about 40-50 fps from the shorter barrel, should put it right at 17.5-18" penetration.

I'd rather push it to 1150-1160 out of a 29 and get 14"-16", wouldnt you?

personally I would like to see them pushing 1250 to 1300 myself. the Underwood 200gr XTP is loaded for 1250 so why can't the 200gr GD???

Chef, I said from my 29. 1250 from a G20 is 1170 from a 29.

I would prefer that, but suspect that is outside the performance envelope of the bullet.

Adding velocity is probably going to increase penetration unless the bullet design is changed to expand more.  It is possible that the increased velocity may create more expansion earlier in the terminal medium, which could reduce penetration, but that is an unknown, and would surprise me a bit.

In most cases the higher velocities resulted in some hollow points to bloom sooner thus less penetration. I found that the XTP bloom later than the Gold Dot. Why I'd like to carry 200 XTP.
