So I'm still shuffling through choices(for my Glock29), 19, 20, or 21# springs. Captured or non-captured...
So what all differs ? Brass fling distances? Felt recoil? I've even heard velocity improves..
If I do go with a 21#, will my S&B fmj's still function ?
Assuming a 1911. I changed from an 18.5lb hammer spring that came in the gun to a 25#. I already had the flat bottom firing pin stop. The only thing that changed was it was harder to rack open and it did slow the violent recoil down but the gun still throws brass into the next county with full house loads. I can easily stop that by loading down the 10mm but I already have a super accurate 40sw. I've also changed out the recoil springs from the standard that came with the gun to one that Wolff calls a heavy duty spring that you have to size it to the gun and cut it to length. Didn't change a thing. Overall, I spent money on springs that all it did was slow the violent recoil or slide speed down some. Yeah, there's a little less felt recoil there and the gun seems a lot happier too. I bought a Wilson buffer pad for it too. NONE of the springs effected trigger, bullet impact, accuracy that I'm aware of, or any other function of the gun.
Working with light bullets, I've reworked the ejector on my R1. I've got it where shooting light bullets, like the 135gr or the Lehigh XD 115gr, it throws brass about 10 ft. But going back to full house loads, I sometimes have to contact NASA to find my brass. Realistically though, it still throws brass 50+ feet.
Guess I should have said my Glock 29. I just know 17lb might work for a 45 ACP or even 40, but seems way too light for REAL 10mm.
Imho...it depends. If you are experiencing early unlock with hot loads, then it can improve velocity, reduce SD, and improve accuracy.
It you aren't experiencing early unlock, the slide will be harder to rack and you may get some bolt over base mid-feeds.
Overkill338, I run the 21 dual spring non captative from Wolff Gun Springs, mine cycles everything mild to wild 10mm even 40S&W / 357Sig / 9x25 Dillon with nothing more than a barrel swap.
Thank you shadow. I'll go with the wolf. Seems like it's the same price as the captured spring I found on evay.
Overkill338, is your G-29 a 3rd? gen or 4th gen? 4th gen has a different purchase where the spring sits in the slide opening because they are larger than the 3rd gen pistols...

It's an SF Gen3.
With a G29 and 19 pound non captive might be a little light for hot hot loads. Only base this on my home grown G20L being about perfect with 19# and hot loads. And not running with standard OTC rounds and a 20# spring. The long slide mass accounts for a large of the calculation so to speak. Way larger than I thought coming here and reading about people running 22# springs which are a non starter for that gun.
I just dont know. I was thinking 20 pound. Ahhhhh :o
My load is 14.5 #9/180gr--the stock 17lb Glock OEM springs work fine(no frame battering)on my G29/3. Feels the same as a Wolff 21lb spring.
