It seem that Government agencies can't make up their minds on anything...FBI left the 10mm opted for 40S&W but also going back to 9mm, Law Enforcement leaving the 40S&W going back to 9mm. Oh well like we say down here in Louisiana " C'est la vie", translated as "That's life" or "Such is Life"...
One thing I like about the 6.8 SPC cartridge is that it can be trimmed to be used in 10mm. I recently made some snakeshot loads using 6.8 brass and my 9x25Dillon dies...
I think it is very likely this will be a militarized 6.8 SPC the same way as the 5.56 is a militarized 223 Remington.
However, this assumes they will want to stick with their investment in the AR-15/M16/M4 platform of guns. If they are going to field a completely new rifle at the same time they don't have to stick with rounds that work in the AR-15 platform.
OTOH, a larger platform is more weight, and ammo based on anything much larger than the 6.8/30 Remington will start to hit payload a soldier can carry significantly.
6.8 SPC that is tweaked is my bet. But by no means a prophecy.
It was several years ago SSA produced a tungsten penetrator round for the 6.8 SPC. It never hit the market to my knowledge.It is my understanding that when Nosler bought SSA they did not secure the rights for the penetrator round. I am wondering if DOD has secured the right for it or maybe Nosler has. This round was suppose to be able to penetrate level IV Body armor. I never have seen any proof of it but your guess is as good as mine.
It was mentioned that a harder hitting more effective round would reduce number of rounds needed in a firefight offsetting the weight factor.

I really hope they carry through with this and use 6.8. I'm not a 5.56 hater, but the 6.8SPCII is just a better military round.

I would bet there would be a pretty significant cost increase for a 6.8 tungsten penetrator.
From what I have read the army is trying to go caseless to ammunition. Doubt it will be the 6.8SPC II.
