Penetration, expansion and velocity test of the Underwood Ammo 10mm 150gr grain Nosler JHP using Clear Ballistics Gelatin. 10MM is often thought of as a hunting cartridge only. I was looking for a self defense round in 10MM that would not over penetrate and yet have great expansion.
Advertised velocity of this ammunition on the box is 1500fps. I am unaware of the barrel length used by Underwood ammo to reach said velocity. I will be utilizing of course a revolver, S&W 610 with a 3 7/8in barrel and a Colt Delta Elite XE Gen 2 with a 5in barrel. These two pistols are most likely what I would be carrying in 10MM as a back woods companion to a hunting rifle. This application is for thin skin animal protection and against 2 legged predators looking for potential easy prey.

Thanks for the testing and video thereof. Underwood does load some impressive rounds. The Nosler bullet tends to be somewhat fragile being Copper Cup & Lead Core construction. This is where the better bonded types seem to hold together better. The recipe for these 155 grain @ 1500 fps has change from varying amounts of 800X to Longshot to produce the results.
Some of the earlier ones had produced SMILED brass cases with some chambers. At one time Kevin had some 155 gr. FMJ's that we Not For Public :o with heavy dose of 800X...
Always enjoy the vids. They're more real world than most of the claims by the ammo makers. I'm kinda surprised the Elite didn't gain more in velocity over the Smith. I would have expected more from it. Regardless, I wouldn't want to get hit with either.
Since the weather turned cold and I can wear a light jacket without sweating, I'm packing my Remington R1 Long Slide 10mm now in an old Bianchi shoulder holster. The carry ammo is 11.5grs of Blue Dot under a Remington 155gr HP@ 1300'ps. Or I also will be carrying the 180gr HST bullet sitting on top of 12.8grs 2400@ 1250'ps. I don't feel that either are at any disadvantage. The HST bullet rolls back picture perfect everytime in a varmint with almost no loss of bullet weight. The 155 will drop about 20% of its weight but it makes a nasty wound channel.

I will only carry 10mm period with 165 gr Underwood Gold Dot minimum. seen to many people take five or six 9mm to the chest and get up also had a lady friend put 7 rounds of 45 acp into a gentleman trying to attack her. he put rounds 8 and 9 into her. He walked away, she barely survived. If I could getaway with carrying 460 S&W I would.
This is one reason I test with the Elite, I did not see any bulged brass. The one thing I noticed is the Fenix ammo I previously tested had a really tight crimp my collet bullet puller struggled. The Underwood ammo did not have as tight of a crimp.
I carry 10mm on occasion in town & almost always when in the sticks... Hunting, hiking, camping...
In town:
Underwood 165gr Gold Dot & 180gr Gold Dot
Hornady 180gr XTP
Sig V-Crown 180gr JHP
In the sticks:
Underwood 180gr & 200gr XTP
Buffalo Bore or Double Tap 155gr TAC-XP
Federal 180gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw
****Havn't tested Underwood Xtreme Defender or Penetrator yet, but might carry in this application.
